U J Puckett on CBS 60 minutes

Okay, another little Puckett story. We are all in Atlantic City for the first Legends Of Pool. All the old timers are there like U.J., Fats, Lassiter, Crane, Mosconi, Caras, Black Rags. The Straight Pool guys hang together and go to sleep early. There is some serious money to be won here, something like twenty five grand to the winner. I was there because Big Fights hired me to write all the bio/promo material for the TV guys to use.

But the old hustlers like U.J. and Fats stay up late hanging out in the bar, telling stories, drinking and just having a lot of laughs with all assembled. Fats and U.J. are having a blast. After all, the bill is on Big Fights, so they are going to party it up on their dime. The conversation gets around to the recent 60 Minutes show with Harry Reasoner, and U.J. tells everyone that he and Harry are buddies now, and he talks to him all the time. He said they even went fishing together, and hung out for a couple of days after the shoot.

A few in the crowd express doubt about this, since Harry Reasoner is a big TV star. U.J. says Hell, I've got his phone number right here. You want me to call him and talk to him right now. Now, it's after one in the morning, but U.J. is a little looped and feeling no pain. He has the bartender bring a phone to our booth and plug it in. No one is believing him now. So U.J. pulls out a piece of paper and calls the number in New York. He wakes Harry Reasoner ("Wake up Harry, it's U.J") from a dead sleep. But once on the phone they begin to gab.

U.J. puts his hand over the phone and says to us, "He's got a broad with him", and he cackles away. Now he hands the phone to Fats, telling Harry there's someone who wants to talk to him. Fats and Harry talk for like 15 minutes, laughing like hyenas. Then he hands the phone back to U.J. U.J. tells Harry to come on down and hang out with them. Now, I know this is crazy, Harry Reasoner is NOT going to come down to Atlantic City to hang out with a bunch of pool players.

The next day Harry is there! With his girlfriend, a young beauty. No one can believe that THE Harry Reasoner is here sweating the pool players. He hangs around all day watching Fats and U.J. play and then they hit the bar. Harry parties with the best of them, drinking and laughing just like one of the boys. U.J., Fats and Harry are like three little kids, telling jokes, laughing their asses off and drinking up a storm. I hung around and did my gopher thing for them until about 2 AM. Then I went to bed. No telling how long they stayed up. Probably till the wee hours. Harry was gone the nest day. U.J. said he had to go back to work. :)

Hey Jay -Make sure that gets in your book!

If you could get some juicier details on Reasoner, your book just might 'crossover' .

Shot missed but not forgotten

Freddie,
I believe this video had a very nice shot removed. If I recall in the original 60-Minute broadcast, UJ shot a ball into a corner rail and then the ball caromed off another ball sinking the object ball in the same corner pocket.
Not sure if it was removed or another 60 Minute broadcast.
Does anyone else remember it?
Regards,
hal

June Hager Walter

I remember when June told me she was on that 60 minutes episode with U.J. .... then when I saw her on it when I finally saw a copy in the mid 90s, I was so proud!

Her break is awesome and she broke with like a 15 oz weight cue, too!

She was probably one of the most influential people in my life - not just related to pool, either.

Thanks a ton Freddy. Great video, I heard of that one before and have wanted to see it for years. The Lady in the second half towards the end crushed the balls on the break.
thanks

....and jumped the cue ball right off the table.

I'll give her the 3:wink:

Mr. Puckett

For photos of Mr. Puckett, go to Billporter.smugmug.com. He is in the Reds gallery and the Austin Tournament gallery. I took a lot of photos of him during those years.

Wonderful, wonderful story. That just shows how unique and fabulous those two characters, UJ and Fatty were. Everybody wanted to hang around them. Presidents or emperors wouldnt have fazed those two. I feel a special kinship to you Jay, because both of us got to experience and appreciate the specialness of those two extraordinary people. I'm so jealous that I wasnt there with you, that I could scream. May they live forever.

U.j.

Puckett was arguably the greatest hustler who ever lived. I knew him well yet always watched myself around him. I have that show, too and look at it once in a while just to remind myself what an interesting character he was.
The word smart didn't do him justice. I never saw him lose and I was around him a lot. He had a pronounced Texas twang and he could really tell a story. When he'd get mad, if you were out of striking range, you'd laugh your head off at what came out of his mouth. I admired him for being able to hit on women, even in his near dotage.
Anyway, I liked and respected Utley and even made a couple of road trips with him. One thing about him: You didn't have to worry about him losing the bankroll while you were sleeping.

What do you mean by that Grady? I never knew him but i heard he could be a bit intimidating and that ausually gave him an edge.

U.j.

Puckett was a hulking, imposing figure of a man. You just didn't want to be near him if he got mad. But I was mostly referring to the fact that great hustlers, like Jack Cooney and U. J. Puckett were always on the job. Any little thing you said or did might be used later to your financial detriment. Your response to: "Who do you like here?" or "Wow, what a shot?" or "He's in a trap. What would you do there?", would be fuel for consideration and later use. These type gentlemen were masters of sublety and deceit and as smooth as silk as they plied their wares.

Grady nails him right there. UJ had a memory like an elephant. He remembered everything you said around him, and if he could use it later to trap you he would. UJ would laugh and say, "Didn't I hear you say so and so was the best player in here?" And you'd shake your head yes. Then UJ would say, "Then why don't you put him in a game with me. I'm old, I'm blind and damn near crippled." And then he would laugh again. Pretty soon he would reel you in, one more fish for his stringer.

I heard that when he was a younger man, no one (not even Cokes) would mess with UJ. I'll bet he whacked his share of heads in his day. :p

when he was a young guy they took him to training camp to become a boxer. after lights out he would row across the lake they were on to a roadhouse that had a pool table. i think he had a few fights before he quit to play pool full time. in houston in the 60's arm wrestling was big, he hustled all the arm wrestlers to practice for $20.00 he beat them all. practice was one of his deals ,he practiced a lot of pool players out of thier money.

Seems like when I went to CJ's for the PCA tournament in 1996, we hung out together with Robin Adair. Robin was one of UJ's best friends. He would know the exact date.
