U.S. Amateur Championship Tournament

Forgive me if I come across as ignorant. I did sign up for this and I believe a packet is being sent to me with more details. Is this prize given to only the one person who wins the championship? I would imagine they are having the qualifiers all over the country at $50 a pop and then a additional $50 or so if you make it to the championship in Florida.

Yes only the person who wins the championship gets into the US Open. The rest of the people get trophies. Here is the awards that you would win if you won the whole thing.

Oh no....only the first place winner receives any 'prizes'....the 2nd-6th? receve trophies.
I agree that there should be a small payout to those that place but don't win.
However, for a 1st place prize, it's pretty good IMO.
The women's field is always significantly smaller than the men's, so it's easier for me to say that.
Of course the APA is making some money off of it, no doubt there. ;)

But of course, I am sure there will be quite a lot of side action around!
Well....just maybe...O:)

I thought they paid airfare and lodging for the qualifiers? or is it just lodging? Didn't they put you guys up in the Marriott Marquis (or somewhere nice) when you were at Mr Cues?

Thanks for the info. I think I will give this a shot even though the light at the end of the tunnel is pretty dim

A friend of mine Dave Hall from here in Maine won that a couple years ago. With the family I don't get out to much travel but from all I have heard is a great run event.

I signed up lastyear, but decided not to play when I realized there was no money in it! An entry fee to the US open isn't enough to make me play in multiple tournaments for free! It may sound bad but I just think they could put up some prize money to go with the trophy!

Same Here! Why play for free??????

Is there a list of players who are restricted from playing?

This is right from there website...

"Professional players are not allowed to participate in the U.S. Amateur Championship. The APA will consult with several professional tours concerning the status of any player. In addition, players who possess professional characteristics will not be allowed to participate. Professional characteristics include, but are not limited to: making the majority of one's income giving exhibitions, giving lessons or playing pool. Please contact the APA if you think there is any possibility that you possess professional characteristics. The APA has a nationwide network of representatives and maintains a list of professional players throughout the country. The APA intends to check the amateur status according to the above guidelines on every entrant into the U.S. Amateur Championship. Those entrants found to be in violation will be consulted and given an opportunity to appeal; however, the APA has the final authority to make the judgment. Entry fees for those entrants found to be in violation will not be refunded."

The folks who win qualifiers get their airfare to the championship host city (Atlanta, the past couple of years at least) and lodging paid for.

And no, they don't put you up at the Marriott Marquis. :P

The past couple of years they've used a hotel a few miles from Mr. Cue's, with a shuttle running to-and-fro. Nothing super-swank but it's not a bad place either.

Yeah, I thought i put that in an earlier post.....travel, lodging, and entry. :D BUT, that's only the winner of the Championship rounds.
Prelims are for the chance to advance to the Championship rounds. If you win the prelim board, they pay 2 nights of your hotel for the championship round

When are we playing and what are you giving me? :p

Can't wait to see you though!

Because for some it isn't about the money but about throwing your hat in the ring with some of the best big table amateurs from across the country. I have qualified for the finals in Atlanta 3 out of the last 4 years and had my best finish last year finishing in a tie for 13th. It is one of the most enjoyable well run tournaments to which I have gone.

If you make it through the qualifier, your airfare IS NOT paid for but the lodgeing at the Championships are

So in total-
You sign up for the qualifying rounds (prelims), depending on the number of players that choose the same location, determines the number of players that can advance to the championship rounds.
If you win your board at the prelim, then you pay again to enter the championship round which is in Tampa, Florida this year.
You get a little glass trophy and 2 nights stay (friday and saturday) during the championship rounds at a hotel near Strokers.
If you win the championship round....your final prize is PAID-travel (airfare), lodging (hotel) and Entry into a pro event. For the men it is for the US Open, the women get a choice of the classic tours.
You also win a really heavy marble and bronze trophy.
Hope that helps.
;)

You do not have to be an APA member at all, I think the entry fee is slightly higher if you are not a member.
Men race to 7
Women to 5 (I wish they would change that!)
