U.S. Snooker Championship

I'd like to play in this event. I'd need at least 6 mos. notice so I could practice. I wouldn't expect to be seeded but I wouldn't want to have to qualify. If anyone can help me, please do so and thanks in advance.

Hell yes, why not.

Send the form, I;ll sign it.

I've seen the way Grady rips shots into those tight Diamond pockets. He'd be unstoppable and a favorite to win any Snooker tournament. IMHO.

Hello Grady.

It's great to read of your interest in playing in next year's United States National Snooker Championship - we would happily most welcome your participation.

We have no firm date or venue set for next year's event, but it is likely that it will be played over the Memorial Day weekend again. The venue will either be the Embassy Billiards Club in San Gabriel, California, or we now also have the option of the Prince Snooker Club in Brooklyn, New York.

A decision will be made well before the end of this year, which will give players at least six months advance notice.

All details will be posted in this forum and on the SnookerUSA.com website.

Warmest regards.

Alan.

Thanks for the prompt response, Alan. I'll be honored to play in the tournament. I have some questions I didn't find on your website:
1. I live in Columbia,SC. Where is the closest 6' X 12" table that is what you use in the tournament?
2. I need the pocket and snooker ball size and what type of cloth would be used.
3. If I wanted to purchase a snooker table for my pool room that is exactly what you use, can I get a decent price? Also what cloth? Of course the rules.
4. Entry fee?
Thanks in advance, Grady "The Professor" Mathews

Hello Grady,

Thank you very much for your questions - I will e-mail you all the details you require as this will be easier.

I can tell you however that there is a gentleman in the Atlanta area who posted in this forum that he wished to sell a 6ft x 12ft snooker table:

Thank you for your interest.

tournament

I'm looking forward very much to playing in your tournament, Alan. I've found most of the answers to the questions I have. I haven't been able to find the prize money breakdown? Thanks,
Grady

I'm not sure about the breakdown, but the prize fund was basically 100% of the entry fees, or $75 * 24 = $1800. The final 16 players played a single-elimination tournament. The prelims were groups of 6 with four advancing from each group.

World Snooker Championship?

Does winning the US title carry with it an invite to the World Championships?

No sorry Grady. Snooker has a real ranking system from grassroots up. You only get to the top by getting to the top. There are no shortcuts, and without being unkind, you haven't got a cat in hell's chance.

There is an intercontinental team competition, which I believe was held in the US last year, but it doesn't involve the pro players from the UK. England 'A' won -taking $5000, and the team consisted of local county level players (Durham to be exact) - David Lilley, Michael Rhodes, and David Craggs who are well know local league players in my area. Lilley took the high break prize ($1000) with a 134, just to give you an idea of the standard of county level players over here.

It's run by the IBSF, who look after the amateur games of snooker and English Billiards. I can't see why you wouldn't qualify to represent the US by right as US champ. Alan Morris might know. Unfortunately it moves around the world I think, and you might find it's somewhere in the Far East next year.

Yes, the top two US players are invited to the IBSF snooker championships. Those are the amateur world championships, not the pro event at the Crucible. I don't know whether the winner of the IBSF event gets any kind of entry to the pro championships. While the US players are invited, the current state of snooker finance in the US is that they have to pay their own way to the IBSF championships.

if you win the amateur world championships you get a place on the main tour i believe.

I believe so. And that's when your troubles begin. If you haven't reached that stage by the grand old age of 21 or so you would be absolutely mad to put yourself through it. Unless you were independently wealthy.

Come off it Ray. I bet it was two years ago, and there was nobody there watching to prove it either.

Oh wait. That was me. Sorry.
