As you do repairs, either on site or at your shop, consider this. Every time you get a Uniloc shaft in for maintenance, take a Q-tip with either alcohol or a solvent like WD40 and clean the insert. It only takes a second to do. It won't be anything that your customer will ever notice but it saves costly repairs in the event the cue locks up.

Good tip Rat, I have been doing this for years.
 
I have a Lucasi and have been doing this since I got it. Probably should do it to the Pechauer with the speed joint.
 
I feel that every brass insert would benefit from a cleaning every now and then. Especially ones with tight tolerances like Uniloc, Viking QR, McD QR, Pech, etc.
 
i just recently heard that the uniloc lock up if there is any dirt on insert or pin. i havent had any problems with mine so far, but it wouldnt hurt to give it an occasional cleaning. will do this for others too.

A kid came in the pool room a while back with a shaft snapped in half, the uniloc jammed and him and his buddy twisted it to failure :grin: . Also just fixed a BK that the insert locked up on and back out of the shaft, refitted with phenolic sleeve and new insert.

Aye, I've installed a few new inserts after people have pulled theirs out of shafts with uniloc pins. Good advice!
 
If they do get locked up, use any penetrating oil that you can control and get a drop inside of the insert if possible. Let the cue sit pin-side down for a half hour or so. It may take a little elbow grease but it will come apart.

Always keep the shaft and butt centered with each other to avoid bending the pin or breaking the shaft.

I just never really got the point of them.......IMOP QR joints are the worst hitting of them all, but for arguments sake lets just say that a good hit is of course up to the individual using said cuestick to decide.........

what I don't get is why they even came up with or had a need to produce such a thing? I can see how its beneficial in a jump cue for sure as you can take it out and put it up super quick........but unless you have 5 shafts:eek:; one for breaking, one for jumping, one for banks, cuts, straight ins then I just don't see the point of having a QR joint on my playing cue?

I liken this to those dam Norelco Electric Razors that have a pack of lotion/shave cream in it.......so when you start shaving you can just push the button and PHHUUUUTTTT it $hits on your face applying the shaving cream.:confused:

Like I wish I had a more expediant way to put on shaving cream on my face, and secondly I wish I had a cuestick that didn't take up so much time in my busy day to put together.......

I don't know which was a worse idea but if these things bother you; applying your shave cream by hand or threading a meucci together then you should just give up now before your head explodes from the sheer mental involvement it takes for our routinely simple and quick everyday task......

They were a nice novelty when they first came out.

I actually like the uniloc pin IF the insert is nice and snug to the pilot.
I've been playing with a cue that has one in it for the last few months, and it's nice when I'm playing at bars. I can take the cue apart and have it back in my case very quickly and easily between matches. That way I don't have to worry about some drunk SOB kicking it over.
 
The quick release joints that became popular in the late 80's were mostly used in the wrap joint on jump/break cues. It keeps you from breaking your flow when you have to jump to be able to take it apart so fast. It is also nice if they are using a time clock in the tournament. I put quick releases in my jump/break cues, but prefer my normal 5/16-14 for my playing cues.
