United State of Pool

Its all about money. Pre-IPT, and even still, your going to be hard pressed to make a living playing pool. Most people realize this, and get out, others plug away, but don't have the time to play as much as they might like. Also its not a mainstream sport, so not to many are exposed to it at a young age. Not many parents take there kids down to the pool hall for billiards lessons.

Why does it appear that the rest of the World has moved a step ahead of the players here in the US? Is it that our great players are past there prime? is it due to the cost of living here or something else. AOL and its debacle seem to have allot in common with the "United States of Pool", so why does it appear that we may be a notch below the rest of the world?

I honestly think this has something to do with 9-ball, even more specifically, Texas Express 9-ball, being "the game". I don't think that the top American players from this generation play as well as the former top American players who came from an era where they played other games and 9-ball wasn't played the way it is today. They play a lot of straight pool in Europe, apparently, and rotation in the Philippines. Both games are more demanding than Texas Express rules 9-ball.

Jimmy...I agree completely with your appraisal...not to mention that the old guys played with inferior equipment, and STILL ran out from everywhere!
Don Willis said it perfectly: "When I played, the payball was a loaf of bread, or a jug of milk! You just couldn't miss, or you (or your family) went hungry!"

My ideas on this subject

Here are some of my thoughts on this issue...I very seldom post and I am sure that I will get blasted for my thoughts...but i really dont care. First thing i want to say is that I LOVE POOL. I have been playing my whole life. With that in mind, listen to a few of my points:

1. If the US Government began supporting pool players financially I would have a sh*t fit. Supporting pool players is the last thing we need to be doing with our tax money.

2. If you wanted to make a lot of money...you chose the wrong job. I teach school...I make a very modest salary...I think I should make more than I do, but I don't ever complain...I knew what I was going to make going into it and I know it is not going to drastically change...If I wanted to be rich, I would have been a brain surgeon...Supply and Demand folks.

3. The basic idea that pool players should make a decent salary does not make economic sense. If you want to hear specific economic theory behind it, post questions. lol

Great post, Aaron. If anybody should get paid the big bucks, its people like yourself that have dedicated their lives to teaching children.

Thanks David. I hope all is well with you. I havent been able to talk to ya since I was running around Murray, Kentucky and you were in the area. You have some great ideas about pool and I have a lot of respect for you. If you are ever up this way get in touch with me on the board and we can play some one pocket.
