Universal smart shaft

A customer brought me a Universal Smart Shaft wanting me to thin it down. Does anyone know if these shafts are hollow behind the ferrule like the Predators or are they solid? I haven't passed on very many requests but this one has me spooked.
 
they are solid....however there are several versions of the USS. The RS has a 1" ferrule, standard capped and threaded, 5/16x18, standard 13mm. The LS is 12.75mm and has a very thin wall thru ferrule. It's on a 3/8 tenon made of some lightweight wood, i think bass wood, which in turn is on a thin maple tenon, about 1/4". I'd be really hesitant to turn down an LS, the ferrule wall is very thin and the material they use is a lightweight thermoplastic and not as strong as the linen based thermosets.
 
If you turn down a LS you will need to replace the ferrule and lose the low squirt.

Thanks for the valuable info guys. I will pass unless he wants a new tennon and ferrule. I'll tell him he's better of having me make a new shaft.
 
This one was some version of the LS. The ferrule was .85 long with a Ø3/8 through tennon. Once I cut the tip off I could see exactly what you guys are talking about. The wood tennon is sleeved with a darker wood. I was expecting a capped ferrule but with it being a through ferrule things went a lot easier. I ended up turning the tennon down to Ø.302, replacing the ferrule with Juma, turned the cue down to Ø11.25, then finish sanded to Ø11mm.

I don't understand why someone would buy such a nice shaft when they know it's not the size they wanted to begin with? It did turn out how he wanted in the end though.

Ø Alt0216 = Diameter symbol. º Alt0186 = Degree symbol. ± Alt0177 = plus/minus symbol. Learned them years ago on 1980's CAD programs. It's funny how they still work today.
