It doesn't.

Unless, of course the game is run to the bathroom to take a dump, again and again. No pill is gonna make you play good pool- avoid the chemicals for your own good.

Nobody would advise you to drink a pot of coffe before shooting, would they? My shakes are bad enough as it is :)

Why would anyone deliberately take a drug that would mess with theikr concentration and stroke?

I certainly wouldn't.

Hey Mr. Wilson...did you know that your favorite next door neighbor and pain in the ass nemesis, Jay North, is celebrating a birthday today. The little prick is 54 years old. How time flies!! If he isn't bugging you any more and causing trouble...just for old times sake...I can f*#k with you today if you like just to bring back some fond memories. :D

Especially when they keel over with a heart attack. If you don't believe me, ask a doctor. That's the best way to find out if you have coronary disease.

Drugs are illegal, foolhardy, stupid, and dangerous. Talking about them like they are a cup of coffee gives the message that it's OK to take them. It's not.

Like Drivermaker said, if you're playing a long gambling session that turns into an endurance contest, the guy who's on some kind of upper will have a big advantage over the guy trying not to fall asleep.

Will they wreck your health if you keep using them? Of course.

Would I take some if I was playing for thousands and thousands of dollars and it would be the difference between getting beat or having a chance to win? Probably. (I'm a liar. I know I would)

A lot of legendary gamblers look back and regret all the damage they've done to themselves but most of the old timers I talk to say the chemicals could of been the difference between winning big or sleeping in a car so I don't blame them for doing it.

I think most of the top players now days are a lot more health conscious and won't play endurance matches like the old days where they play for 40 straight hours,etc...

SOME drugs are illegal, foolhardy, stupid, and dangerous....for SOME people, SOME of the time.

Drugs are like any other tool. They require careful use if the job is to be done successfully.

Uppers, at the right time, can make a tremendous difference in good outcomes. To dismiss them or to embrace them wholeheartedly is irrational. Use them with care for specific circumstances and they can be good and valuable. For example, the government* gives them to military pilots who are in the air for long periods of time....it makes killing people more efficient and saves replacing crashed airplanes. The risk of use is small compared to the risk of mission failure. This could be true of a late-night pool match, too, couldn't it for SOME people, SOME of the time?

*(the same govt. that incarcerates mostly poor people for the similar dealings, btw.)

I'm starting to really like this guy. Can you say brains instead of prejudice? That's what this here Chefjeff's got.

There is nothing rational about taking illegal drugs. Either you do or you don't. If you do, in my book you're a loser.

In the '70's - UPPERS - were VERY popular. They were usually prescription diet pills. Many different names but the most popular were called Black Beauties.

I took one, one time to play, because I could see the results from the better players who took them.
My Experience Was - I lost More $ - AND - Had More Fun than ever before.

I NEVER again took one to play on - BUT - Many times - IF- I HAD to drive from say St. Louis to Vegas OR (one time) from Miami to Denver - I honestly THINK they made it possible and helped me to stay alert. I always slept for at least 10 hours before playing.

One very important fact to remember - Louie, Carrillo, Clyde, Tony and Many, Many more (some still with us) - ALL started on - UPPERS & WEED.

I have been blessed not to have too many "Dennis' in my life.

My friend, if it makes you smile though, you can play Dennis for me :)

It ALWAYS makes me smile :D ......now, let's see....what can I do to this ol' goat..... :p :D

In the past I have had problems with those all day tournaments which go from 8 am to 11 pm. (And add a 6 hour wait for your next game in the middle of that.) Just poop out later on...

But recently I have had success "lasting till late in the evening" by regulating how much I eat and when I eat. Basically snacking lightly throughout the day. Then if I know I will have a few hours before my next match, I'll go eat a larger lunch or dinner. I get sleeply after eating a larger meal, but I'll have a few hours to get rid of the sleepiness.

Then I'll take one of those herbal energy pills (sold at health food stores)around 2 pm. This kind of makes me feel "normal" energetic, but not "pepped up".

And I try to stay away from too much soda pop/caffeine.

I agree - And

Last Feb I played in the MO state championships and was really surprised that (at 60 years old and about 100 lbs overweight), I was able to play a Round Robin 9 Ball tourney for 13 hours on Saturday, sleep 4 hours, and come back to play another 14 hours on Sunday.
I think back and agree with what you have said. Because it was round robin, we just went from match to match without time to eat.
At every available pause - I went out in front and grabbed some fresh air and tried to stay focused.
I think the fresh air & change of scenery helped a lot.
