I was recently asked to ship a book to the UK. I started the paperwork and gave up when I was asked for the tax IDs of sender and recipient. It didn't used to be that hard or expensive.
as said times change and there are many times the packages being shipped because of the internet.
but things that have been delayed to me always seem to have the address and instructions written in smaller letters or hard to read, and the numbers just as badly.
many or most of the packages get scanned and move along. so if your 8 looks like a 6 or what ever, your package goes someplace else and sits there till someone figures out, and re-sends it along.

You're still in the problem though once it leaves the country you can't track it. So you're at the mercy of whatever takes place after that and the honesty of the person you're shipping to.
I was using PirateShip. A few clicks in, after puzzling through the precise tariff category number I should use for a billiard instructional book (something like19.0099.0100), PirateShip asked me for the tax ID numbers of both parties. As I said, it didn't used to be this hard. I assume it is a result of the new tariffs. I believe I previously shipped with the "de minimis" exception on taxes, where they don't bother with small values even if it is a commercial transaction.
I suppose I could have lied and called it a gift, for which there would have been no tariff hassle, but I was unwilling to lie.
Maybe I got off on the wrong path, but I just followed the path PirateShip send me on when I tried to ship a sale to the UK.

Yea, you even need that number now for Canada. Just save it somewhere so you don't have to go looking for it every time.
Yes, I have no separate tax ID number, so it's my SSN. You may not want to send it out, but you have to provide it on the shipping form for any item sold and shipped to a foreign address. This seems to be a new thing with the new tariffs.
