US Open - Good Luck to the "Mosconi 8"

As we all know, Coach Wilson will soon announce his final five selections for Team USA from the eight players selected in March.

The US Open will be the best tune-up the Mosconi 8 (Shane Van Boening, Justin Bergman, Jeremy Sossei, John Schmidt, Brandon Shuff, Corey Deuel, Oscar Dominguez, Justin Hall) have before the Mosconi Cup in early December.

Wishing all of them the best of luck at the US Open and at the Mosconi Cup.
 
Despite MW previously saying that his decision will not really be influenced much by the US Open unless one of the 8 prospects wins it, you have to figure he will be watching them very closely. It's a great tester though the meanness or mercy of the draw will come into play.

I, too, wish these eight guys the best in their matches.

The results are starting to come in now, so let's have a look:

Shane Van Boening
Undefeated and will play in Winners bracket Round 4 tonight. Not playing his best yet. After a bye, squeaked past his first opponent, Robb Saez. Then beat Strickland.

Justin Bergman
Still in and will play in losers bracket Round 4 tonight. Only loss was an 11-10 affair to Mike Dechaine. Bergman has been solid.

Corey Deuel
Undefeated and will play in Winners bracket Round 4 tonight. Coming off a sloppy win over an off-form Jayson Shaw, but a solid effort so far.

Jeremy Sossei
Still in and will play in losers bracket Round 4 tonight. After getting a forfeit, lost a double hill match but is chugging along well on the B side and just beat and eliminated Max Eberle.

Justin Hall
Still in and will play in losers bracket Round 4 tonight. Won his first two and gave a solid effort in a loss to Jason Klatt.

Oscar Dominguez
Beaten by an in-form Jon Pinegar/Hennessee, won two matches but was eliminated in 49th place. Did not cash.

John Schmidt
Beaten by an off-form Jason Klatt, who scrathce don the break four times and missed quite a few shots. Then won two matches but was eliminated in 49th place. Did not cash.

Brandon Shuff
Two and out, but didn't play that poorly. Fought the good fight in a double hill loss to Uchigaki and then drew Rodney Morris. Eliminated in 97th place. Did not cash.

Good luck to the five guys who remain.

At the end of play on Thursday, here's how it looks:

Shane Van Boening
Undefeated and will play in Winners bracket Round 5 on Friday. Not playing his best yet. After a bye, squeaked past his first opponent, Robb Saez. Then beat Strickland. Won over the superb Quan, coming from behind. Shane will finish 9th or better.

Justin Bergman
Still in and will play in losers bracket Round 5 tomorrow. Only loss was an 11-10 affair to Mike Dechaine. Bergman has been solid and will finish 25th or better.

Corey Deuel
Won his first three including a win over Jayson Shaw but lost to Nick "the Greek" Ekonomopolus and will play in losers bracket Round 6 tomororw. Solid effort so far, and Corey will finish 17th or better.

Jeremy Sossei
Still in and will play in losers bracket Round 5 tomorrow. After getting a forfeit, lost a double hill match but is chugging along well on the B side, beating and eliminating both Max Eberle and Albin Ouschan. Very impressive. Plays Justin Hall tomorrow. Jeremy will finish 25th or better.

Still in and will play in losers bracket Round 5 tomorrow. Won his first two and gave a solid effort in a loss to Jason Klatt. Then demolished Pagulayan. Plays Jeremy Sossei tomorrow. Justin will finish 25th or better.

Thank you, I should have looked it up. I remembered that two of the "Mosconi 8" were facing each other tomorrow morning.

These five guys played very well today in my estimation.
 
Corey lost hill hill to Ekonomopoulos who destroyed everyone prior to that. Kiamco would have been his next opponent if he won.

As many have noted, we went to the Ryder Cup without Billy Horschel, the hottest American player in golf this summer because, it would seem, the team was selected too early.

Still, five of our Mosconi 8 have played well this week. I hope you're as proud of Van Boening, Bergman, Sossei, Deuel and Hall as I am. If we send them as our team to Blackpool, at least we'll have five guys that are in pretty solid form right now.

Mark Gray is the only confirmed Euro member, as far as I know.

I can't remember how exactly the teams are decided this year, but I would probably expect Daz and Niels to be there.

EDIT: Ah okay, the first three Euro spots are decided by which European player is top of the Euro Tour rankings (Gray), which European is highest in the World Rankings (currently Niels) and which European player is the highest when you combine the two (currently Niels, then Gray, and then Nick E; so based on that I think Nick the Greek would get it).

Obviously the final two rankings are subject to change based on how this week goes. The final two spots will be wildcards.

Seems like Immonen and Appleton would be two strong wild-card choices then.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see Daz get one of the first three spots with a strong finish here (I'm not exactly sure how many ranking points each player has, but I know he's still in the running in the world rankings at least). The same goes for Thorsten, too.

I can't see a way Daz doesn't make the team. And honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see Boyes get a wildcard spot again, given his recent performances and (perhaps more importantly) his recent win alongside Daz in the World Cup of Pool, another Matchroom event.

We'll see.
 
In a Mosconi 8 update, Hall beat Sossei (kind of figured we'd lose one of the eight in that one) and Bergman beat Geronimo.

Four of the Mosconi 8 are still alive in the US Open, with SVB assured at least 9th and Deuel, Hall and Bergman all guaranteed 17th or better.

It's a solid showing in such a tough field.
 
I like shane ,corey, hall, bergman, and the last spot my mind says sossei but my heart likes shuff because of the tough matches hes played and won away from tournament pool. I think he might handle the situation (loud crowd etc...) better.
