MR made the decision to go with qualifiers. It was their responsibility to figure out how to make them work. From reports from some of the rooms that looked into it, the requirements from MR were not acceptable to the rooms. MR wanted money on top of the entry fee, according to a couple reports.
Also, the qualifiers needed to be set up and announced much earlier, like six months or more before the Open. The correct contact info and most of the qualifier info should have been on the MR site.,
A huge problem with qualifiers is that you will not find 32 players in one city who all want to play in the Open. You can find 32 who would like to be part of the local competition (at a reasonable entry fee) even though they can't go to the Open itself due to work, cost, etc., It's going to cost somewhere over $1000 to go to the Open plus whatever their vacation time is worth to them. Anyone under 700 can expect to finish out of the money.
The $1000 expense assumes a one-day drive and sharing a room at Harrah's, Flying within the US, renting a car, and a single room is going to run over $2000. This assumes your entry was paid by qualifying, or that will be another $750.
If MR continues with qualifiers for half the field, they will need to fix things.
