$750 entry.

I'm guessing they need to try to fill out the field. But I’m also guessing most people who would shell out the $750 to play have already gotten in with a qualifier or exemption.

hell, i know a guy who finished 3rd in a qualifier where there was only supposed to be one spot and he got a wildcard invitation.

The qualifier system seems to be working well for this event. I read about a well-known AzB-er from Norway who is coming to the USA to compete in the US Open, and he got in on a qualifier. This is great!

on the other hand, there was one (?) qualifier in asia. i think two or three in europe, but also that is a little short. absolutely the big majority of qualifiers should be in the US.. but if it doesn't fill with american players there are plenty of vietnamese, filipino and european players eager to compete..

He didn't get a wildcard invitation, he was just asked to pay $750 for the entry before general public.

I never did get the chance to play in one of the 2 local-ish qualifiers near me. Not that yanking out 750usd is in the cards for me this year regardless.

I'm not surprised by the spot availability though. It didn't seem like there was enough qualifiers to fill the 128 non seeded spots. Not sure if it was a common theme, but they amount of qualify-ees coming out of the qualifiers seemed to be determined by field size. 2 spots for 32, 4 for 64...

The two qualifiers I could have attended had a full 32 for the first and a mere 11 for the second. The second was just set up and scheduled in poor fashion.

Not sure if we can expect the same vacancies for next year, but I'll have to keep it in mind when burning through my vacation.

This yrs. qualy process was a TOTAL goat-f%&k. Talk about inept. Qualifiers for an event this big should be set in place AT LEAST 6mos before the event if not a full year. I like MR/WNT in general but there are some aspects of their ability to run things that are sorely in need of a re-boot.

I played in a qualifier 3 weeks ago. It was supposed to be 2 spots per 32 entries (per MR rules). 2 weeks before the event, the TD said MR changed the rules and it is now as many qualifiers as the TD wants to send. We had 28 players (31 paid, 3 were a no-show and their money stayed in the pot). The TD sent 4 qualifiers, and had a small amount of cash left over for cash prizes in addition.

A week after the qualifier was over, the TD said anyone that played in his qualifier and would like a spot in the Open, he has a few "invites" as long as we pay the full $750.

This hi-lites what i said: a total dumpster-fire. These qualy's need to have same set-up at each one. This half-assed way of doing things does not look good for a co. like MR.

can any room apply to hold one?

maybe they should weed out the not so good ones for next year. the other option is to have one big qualifying event the week before the US open, arranged by MR. still think having it in pool rooms makes sense because of the geography / cost for the participants

I really think there was not enough demand from the players. My qualifier was advertised months in advance snd every week the TD was re-promoting it. The turnout was what it was. From other qualifiers I saw nationwide most were in the 25-32 player range.

Also of note half of my field was in the 500’s. The local 700 players and high 600s all stayed home.

I like the pool room aspect but they need to get them set-up much earlier so people can make plans. Each qualy should have to be run the same way in terms of the entries awarded per player ratio. This yrs. qualy. process just looked to be really poorly thought out. Hopefully MR learned from it.

This was not MR or local TD problems. This was player's not getting out of bed to enter problems.

Most of us predicted this would happen 1 year ago.

MR made the decision to go with qualifiers. It was their responsibility to figure out how to make them work. From reports from some of the rooms that looked into it, the requirements from MR were not acceptable to the rooms. MR wanted money on top of the entry fee, according to a couple reports.

Also, the qualifiers needed to be set up and announced much earlier, like six months or more before the Open. The correct contact info and most of the qualifier info should have been on the MR site.,

A huge problem with qualifiers is that you will not find 32 players in one city who all want to play in the Open. You can find 32 who would like to be part of the local competition (at a reasonable entry fee) even though they can't go to the Open itself due to work, cost, etc., It's going to cost somewhere over $1000 to go to the Open plus whatever their vacation time is worth to them. Anyone under 700 can expect to finish out of the money.

The $1000 expense assumes a one-day drive and sharing a room at Harrah's, Flying within the US, renting a car, and a single room is going to run over $2000. This assumes your entry was paid by qualifying, or that will be another $750.

If MR continues with qualifiers for half the field, they will need to fix things.

I think anyone who knows the US pool scene could easily have predicted this -- the qualifier path was DOA.

I don't know about anyone else, but a $750 entry -- plus travel (air/gas), lodging, transport, and living expenses turns this into a ridiculously expensive boy's fantasy camp for most of us.
