Big chunk of change...disheartening to see but the lower placed players get a little more this year....

It seems that Barry has always overextended himself in trying to make the highest payouts possible. Last year the line was drawn in the sand by the ABP and he promised to pay all funds on time.

I would guess that to make sure he can pay in full, he had to reduce the amount. It's what the players wanted, so now they are getting paid on time - it's just less.

I think the only way to make an apples to apples comparison is to compare the total prize fund for each year, and how many players attended each year. Some of the years with a high first place had a really wacky distribution, if I recall correctly. Like 40k first, and 15k second.

Don't care much for the payout.

This is the biggest tournament of the year. It should definitely be top heavy, and there should be a much bigger difference between 1st and 2nd.

On a good note, the $10,000 for third place hasn't changed since 2003. Same amount!

I found the money. He is paying out $25,600 to 65-96 spots. These players are way out of the top 4th of the field but will get paid anyway. I think he just took money from the top spot and spread it out hoping to get a bigger field next year. He is very Obama like with this approach, do not need to reward hard work of the single winner prefering to spread it out.

Quick question do you prefer more payout to the cream of the tourney with a huge first, good 2nd-4th or is better to give a pittance to 14% of the field who finish out of the top 4th. Now golf pays it deep but they truly reward the winner. They can do that because they have tons of added money.

I would prefer more at the top but it is Berry show he can do what he wants.

The prize fund is indicative of many issues related to pool in the US (higher costs (fuel, food, lodging), waning interest in the sport of pro pool, many people/fans out of work or under-employed, etc.) It's a shame to see our country's most prestigious tournament in such a tight spot. Hopefully some changes happen real soon so our country's economy can get going again.

Tv

Maybe...if the heads of this tourney will focus their efforts in finding a television to cover the event the price money will be higher. The rights to televised such an event are big and will bring more money to the tourney. I know what I am talking about and even if you'll say that nobody is interested in televising pool I'll tell you it's not true.
A great package offered to media made by an experienced marketing manager will make them get involved. I experienced this already...everybody wants to win something from this...and it should be like this...just that it doesn't have to be money but audience, advertising, fame......blah blah...
....just my 2 cents...

Compare pool to golf is about a big a difference as you can get! There is no big sponsarship of pool and it will never change. I can bet people who manage big company's surf this forum and after reading all the crap that goes on in pool they recommend to there company's don't go near this sport.Barry does a fantastic job trying to put on the best show he can. The payouts are down because if you took the players, vendors and suport people away from this venue you would see there is really only a solid fan base of maybe 400 that show up and that ain't going to make a huge profit. Maybe when Mitt wins he should change the payout to the top 1% and then that will really attract all the players:smile:...or maybe ship it to china

Pepsi

Was there a Pepsi advertising banner? Anyone know the extent of Pepsi's involvement with the tournament? I thought I heard them being thanked as a sponsor.

thanks

Pepsi is shown on us open site as a sponsar and the holiday inn venue only served pepsi products on site so they kinda went hand in hand since the holiday inn is in charge when hosting any event there. Don't know what they kicked in.

Really like the idea of $800 for 65-96th place. I can imagine a few "normal" people coming home feeling very happy with that in their pocket. You know, for players who have to hold down regular jobs and don't get that much free time to practice, it's very cool to still have a shot at winning prize money which will let them buy their friends and family a few drinks and pay for transport costs at the end of the tournament.

To me, the US Open is the equivalent of World Series of Poker Main Event. It's the biggest tournament of the year, and first place here should pay WAY more than first place in any other event.

The WSOP Main Event pays out 10% while the US Open this year payed out almost half the field. I'm not saying that only 10% of this year's field should have been payed, but it could definitely be a lot lower than what it was to allow a much higher payout for 1st.

Nobody cares about the people that just squeeked into the money. You won't be seeing any articles on the main page about some random guy who got 94th place.

Lastly, it's my opinion that the higher 1st place is, the more interested your average person might be in pool.

The economy is still tough out there and Barry has to adapt like many others.
60k added is still helluva a good money.
Sponsors arent gonna kickin more than that or the same in this economy.

Thats why we need vote Romney! More companies will spend then im sure.
