I was just thinking about this besides saving your self the 3% paypal fees when selling something and avoiding any paypal headaches . What are the advantages or disadvantages of using usps money orders over paypal ?

If a seller says he will only accept usps money orders would this stop you from buying whatever he is selling ?

Thanks for your thoughts on this subject........ Larry

The 3% (or w/e) charge is so worth it IMO.

Personally I'll take $1,000 in pennies so any way they want to send it is fine with me.

I was screwed very good by a postal money order, the seller said he didn't recieve the mo and I drove 10 hours to avoid a neg on ebay and paid the a$$hole cash and even left him 50 cents to mail the mo back if it ever arrived. I waited the 60 days and the post office said it had not been cashed so I cancelled the mo and recieved a refund 2 weeks later, 6 months later the Ahole goes out of buisness and deposits the mo in his account without me knowing of course. Ten days later I get a registered leter from US Treasury saying I owe them the mo amount plus $55 fees immediatly since I recieved double usage of the mo, to which I say I cancelled the mo and they inform me that cancelling the mo does not stop payment. The Treasury dept. gave me ten days and when I called to pay it off the agent in Alabama told me this is all about 500 agents do all day long in his part of the Treasury dept. collect on double used mo's, and it is my responsibility to catch the Ahole and collect my money not theres. I will never send another postal MO unless to a close family member and may use western union for that. JMHO--Leonard

Yes, because I cant use this service from Austria, also I feel more secure with Paypal. Never had a problem with it.

There has also been issues with counterfeit USPS Money Orders.

The down side would be that you have no protection whatsoever from a rip-off artist...no recourse, save going the legal route. it takes a great deal of trust to do deals involving Money Orders and Bank Wire Transfers.

wow, that is scary.i had no idea that went on.it doesn't make much sense that they can' canvel them, but considering it is the USPS it does make sense.

I have no problem with a money order but I send them registered so they have to sign, that way I have proof they at least got something from me.

When I see "money order only" I say whoooaaaa!!

If they don't take paypal, take it to a dealer and let me deal with a bonafide dealer, who will take not just paypal, but a credit card. Paying with a credit card, especially paying with a credit card via paypal is the way to go, IMHO.

If you know the guy or can meet him in person to exchange cash, that's even better.

Caveat emptor!

Somewhat depends on the amount too, if its a big ticket item I would prefer Pay Pal or a CC as well.

Most of my online purchases are a few hundred dollars or less.

If I don't know the person and am ordering something cheap, say up to $10, I'd have no problem putting a bill in the envelope and sending it like that.

$20 or above and I'm looking for Paypal or CC; a USPS money order would be fine with a regular business, but I just don't have time to go to the post office, yada yada...

There are very few things I need that can't be bought with a CC...

If someone insists on a money order, it's a red flag to me. Why not a personal check? That'd work too, and I've done that and told them I'll be happy to wait for the check to clear. That seems to cool their heels a bit.

As soon as we get in the over $100 range, I want the protection of a CC. If they can't handle that, and the purchase can't be made in person or with a personal check, I'm not doing business.

If someone wants to commit a crime they'll find a way. I'm not going to make it easy for them.

Believe it or not there are COUNTERFEIT USPS Money Order Floating Around. Thieve, and Criminals, seem to be one step ahead of honest people. But the Local Post Office can normally tell you if you have the REAL DEAL, or a Counterfeit.

FYI: If you have a personal PayPal account and receive a payment debited from the users PayPal balance, there are zero fees.

For us customers from a foreign land we can get postal money orders at our local post office. They aren't USPS money orders but they're the same. Anyway, I don't know how it is in the States but here in Japan it costs me 25 dollars for the money order and another 15 to send it. Depending on what I buy the 3% of Paypal can cost less than the MO.

i have seen them.i saw a guy pay off with some of them in a pool game in the Southeast.i won't say who,but yo're right they do exist.

A disadvantage to usps money orders vs paypal is the post office does not accept credit cards for payment on a M.O. ....where as credit cards are an acceptable type of payment through paypal, and no a request for a money order would not stop me from purchasing anything on azb....

lol i swear sometimes people deserve getting ripped off. i hear so many people falling for that scam and im just wondering how they could even let it happen since its so obvious. i guess greed gets the better of some people.

PayPal is better than Money Order any day!

I work at a bank and you wouldn't believe how many people fall for money order scams where they are asked to cash the money order and send back a portion. Of course it often takes a week or 10 days for them to get notice that the money order was fraud and then that person is stuck. In my opinion from working in the banking industry, I greatly prefer PayPal and the 3% fee versus ever chancing anything with postal money orders or any sort of money order or moneygram. PayPal is there and you are paid and have the money in hand before you ever ship anything out. Versus depositing or cashing the money order at your bank, only to find out it is fraud 10 days later!
