USA 3rd in World?

I don’t know the answer to this and it might contribute to the conversation.

Which countries have placed in the top three positions in the big US tournaments over the last five years?

If players from other countries do travel and if they attend big money events then their representation in the top three positions would show which countries have more top players.

Does anyone have the information?

Why is Europe considered as one country? I don't get that, it will be only fair to count Asia as one country then if you want to count Europe as one.

then Asia would be above all obviously, and for me to list them

1. Asia
2. Europe
3. USA/Canada (Northern America) as one country.

Asia is a continent, perhaps Europe should be considered as one too in this context. This is just generalizing to show a region's strong players versus breaking it all down to individual countries.

Jay, I am surprised that you are surprised. Wouldn't you expect the timing of a boycott in pool to be off beat, with no rhyme, or reason? Seems to me that these are the kind moves that keep getting pool stuck behind the 8 ball.

USA has dominated this sport for over 100 years DEAL WITH IT!!!

Haha you are bang on actually.. It was 2008 straight after I won world 10ball I was out ther partying with my good friend yannick and he said come enter a tournament which I did with a hangover. Was actually a good tournament but Not easy to play after 20bottles of budweiser the night before :-)

Nice to see you post here! How would you rate the level of the Thai players?? I know they aren't a power house but i'm very curious what you have to say.

Regards.

PS, please, I KNOW you weren't drinking buds in Bangkok. At best it had to be Heiniken or one of the Thai beers :)

Philippines number 1

I dont think that the taiwanese and the chinese should be considered into the top ranked countries until they start playing somewhere else other than a 3 hour flight away. They only seem to play in tournaments that are within there vicinity and in my opinion it takes a toll on someone to fly 18 plus hours to play in a tourney where you have the chance to get put out in the first day. That is why the Philippines is first in my book with the Euros coming in second. Those guys play all over the world and still finish high every tournament.

Europe and Asia could both field extremely strong teams that would be neck and neck in seriously long competitions that aimed to see the cream rise to the top.

Asia
Orcullo
Bustamente
LeeVan
Yang
Wu
Kou
Alcano
Chang
Gomez
Manalo

That there is a sick team
.
Europe
Mika
Ralf
Thorsten
Van Den Berg
Appleton
Ortmann
Stalev
Melling
Feijen
Peach

That there is a team with unreal firepower that in round robin races to 21 against the Asian team might actually win.

Now try to come up with a round robin race to 21 team for North America that would stand a chance in rotational pool. People are going to want to pull out 1 pocket and banks and alot of other games not played on the international stage, but for rotational pool, the most internationally recognized and well paid facet of this sport North America does not have 10 players that could win against either of the above teams.

North America
SVB
Archer
Deuel
Strickland
Morris
and now the pickings start to get alot slimmer, you end up picking players who have not managed to do squat on the world stage against the best international fields that can be put out there.

Great idea, that would be really nice to see - Euro vs. Asia!!!

thats a lovely idea, and another suggestion would be "Asia vs Euro vs America" once a year, they play as a league the three of them players, an event that takes place for say 10 days where every player play against other, I wouldn't miss this for the world.

Two words: Government money.

That's the difference between many countries and the USA. Many of the huge international events are subsidized by their national Olympic Committees, via their government. Even if the billiards industry in the U.S. were to be a member of the US Olympic Committee, there would never be that kind of money available to us.

Players from many countries are subsidized by their governments. Their travel is covered and some even receive salaries. This gives them time to focus on their games, while the U.S. players are always scrambling to find ways to make money to survive.

However, there is the big tradeoff ---- The one that spells freedom to do whatever you want as opposed to having the government dictate the direction of your life. Freedom comes with a price.

Another way that players can be subsidized is by gangster money. Do we really want to go there?
