Using powerful shots out of the break is always wrong?

Not counting some ridiculous position play or intentionally scattering a tight group of balls. I mean this as shooting hard at your ball(s) in an attempt to pocket something by luck, which everybody says is idiotic. I understand that shooting at pocket speed or playing a safety is a way more reliable option. But what to do in those scenarios when your chances of dropping the easiest OB are below 7% and making a successful safety is practically impossible? This can happen often to lower players. Isn't it more logical to try out luck as your last resort instead of simply giving an open table to your opponent on a silver plate without a fight?

I've done EXACTLY that in cheap ring games before and came out shining. I've won as many as 13 racks in a row of 9-ball on a barbox doing just that. Whenever I was screwed and had no chance of making a ball, I played "slam them as hard as you can and get as many balls rolling as you can" and nobody shot for 13 games, except me.

Finally someone agrees with me. Miracle! I wonder where the usual crew is right now, I'd like to see them try to beat both your and my arguements.

To take it one step further, I find that I own the room when I use the technique of shooting as hard as possible while always going for a combo to the 9. In that scenario, you double your chances of pocketing a ball and also winning at the same time. It's foolproof.

It depends on the rules you are playing (do you mean slop counts?) and the game you are playing. I suppose in 9 ball you can try that but maybe you dont pocket a ball and leave the 9 hanging, game over for you, maybe the safety was a better choice. In 8 ball, maybe the ball you pocket is the 8 and you lose, again playing safe is the better choice. You can also cluster your balls together instead of seperate them or you can break out problem balls for your opponent, once again playing safe is the better choice. When playing safe you do not need to hide the cue ball for a successful safe, sometimes just creating 1 problem ball for your opponent is all it takes for a good safe. If you are playing 10 ball, sending a ball for a ride would be your worst choice in almost any scenario.

Situational

There are rare times when it is the right shot/tactic.

I think Buddy Hall referred to it as a 'strategic blast'.

I don't recommend it as a 'go to' shot in normal play (that would be 'bangin'), but if other options don't look good...'rearrange the furniture'.

This may be the heralded 'fram' shot.

It is interesting how often a ball will fall when they are all moving.

Actually, it can be used in many games, but the rules have to allow slop. I was talking about it being a good tactic only when any safety is a poor option. And with time you can learn how to reduce the chances of a ball like the 8 falling in when doing this.

This is exactly what I had in mind. Btw "fram shot"? Did you misspell ram shot or is something else?
