USPPA Reno players, did they get paid?

I'm hearing stuff about Tony paying at least one player who had around $1700 coming with one of the Gold Crowns used as a practice table in Reno. I have also heard that someone did talk to someone at the Peppermill and the Peppermill did not ad any money to this tournament.

All I need now is a $5 shake.

did he pay for transport and installation of pool table or is that for the player to pickup the tab on?

It's a shame that we didn't get paid (I was one of the players). Tony told us at the tournament when it was time to collect our money, that the tournament had to be paid by check. First the checks were going out on the 10th, then called me on the 22nd and said thank you for your patience and the checks would be going out Dec 29. I think I have been told enough bull to last a long time. Some of the players have started to talk nice about Tony, but this is because they are the ones that got their money (by personal checks) or have made an arraingement with Tony for payment (pool table). Alex how can you say anything good about Tony when he said that the Broken Rack (he's the manager) will no longer be holding the USPPA tournaments beccause the equipment was bad and you served alchohol. Is it because you haven't gotten your money yet and just to stay on his good side, is that why your talking about Tony in a good way? Didn't the Broken Rack halt all USPPA tournaments until everyone was paid? If people would just tell exactly how they feel instead of kissing his ass (so they'll get paid) this thread may do some good and tell about the real Tony.

P.S. Carl Wilson has called the pool hall where Tony is the manager a number of times and never got a call back (he's owed $3000) and the pool room won't even answer the phone anymore. Guess he's doesn't know about *67 and caller ID.

It says the Peppermill was not involved with the billiard event in any way of handling players or money. The peppermill was simply the place of the event.

Casinos hand out freebies all the time entry into a poker tournament isn't much of an added value.

I believe that The Broken Rack was the last pool room in the SF Bay Area that continued to host any USPPA tournaments. (As stated prior, there was a USPPA tournament 4 nights a week in our area at one time). Sad that they are no longer going to be doing this for whatever reasons. I had heard it was because Tony said the equipment was inadequate and that he wanted to run them out of his room so he could supervise them personally.

So, pretty much that's it for the USPPA in the Bay Area unless something changes. But I think it would be hard to bring back player support after this.
Definitely unfortunate for all involved and for our local pool scene.

Handicapping problem?

Thanks for providing a link to that interview! Amazing that I couldn't find any reference to why the players didn't get paid! Maybe I missed it.

I did read that there were handicapping problems and they needed to be check out though.

I watched a couple of the matches via the live stream which was quite good and enjoyed it very much.

While watching the event, I watched Tony give a long speech how the handicapping of the USPPA was in fact very fair. He even gave many examples of why it was fair and really accurate and that all the people that thought people were sandbagging were in fact not true at least anymore.

If anyone else watched the live feed and watched the finals with Jeff Gregory and saw the speech that Tony gave at the end, you will know why he is such a weasel. My opinion only of course!!!

I don't think you will ever get a response from Tony here. Snakes are best not seen when in tall grass.

Just my observations and opinions. I don't know this guy and don't care about him a lick but I hate frauds that get away with these kind of money activities. I'm thinking this is a case of "Rob Peter to Pay Paul" .
Peter being all the players and Paul being Tony! Ha!

Yeap.....I remember USPPA tournaments night used to be in those Bay Area pool halls. Monday night @ Family Billiards in San Francisco. Tuesday night @ The Broken Rack in Emeryville East Bay. I am not sure about Wednesday night. Thursday night @ Family Billiards in San Francisco. Sunday night @ California Billiards in Mountain View. Family Billiards CANCEL ALL THERE USPPA TOURNAMENT and California Billiards CANCEL THERE USPPA SUNDAY NIGHT TOO. Is there is any reson they cancel all these USPPA tournaments by room owner? Now that Tony sent out email to The Broken Rack that said due to there equipment was inadequat and canceling USPPA at The Broken Rack too? I did not know USPPA have STANDARDIZATION So.....What is " The standard equipment for USPPA " as tables wise? After all these years The Broken Rack was the one room supported USPPA tournaments for the longest time.

Some people on here are saying that they know Tony on a personal basis. Then tell him to come on here and give a explanation.
You may now say "He owes nobody a explanation except the players that have not been paid" That much is kinda true, I think that alot more people are involved here now that just his NON payed players. This is a business decision he has to make to try to clear his name.

I do not know Tony personally and I take people as I find them as a rule. I also understand that to those who know and support him he is a good guy and that something has happened to prevent him from making payment. Things happen sometimes so he needs to come and clear the name of his business.

Until then I say F*^k this guy, he is not doing the right thing. I suggest that all players boycott all his leagues and events until all are paid and a public explanation has been made.

I give you all 5 to one if Griffin or myself (Not putting myself in the same league as Griffin) put on a event and nobody got paid there would be hell to pay.

I wonder why nobody bails him out of this jam like someone bailed that overseer(TD) out in Phoenix. What would you say if that didn't happen?
He just needed the right babysitter..

The guy in Phoenix, Chuck Bobbit wasn't a complete bail out. Bobbit had to sell his pool tables that he had in a pool room to get the money that he got. Of course the semi bail out was due to Mark Griffin saying I will buy the tables but the $$ has to go directly to the players that wern't paid or I ain't buying them. Something like that. Also due to the TD from the event chasing down the Promoter with legal action pending and helping organize whatever payment he could make.

sad

...what a sad debacle....as a former USPPA participant, it's difficult to see what it has devolved into....I wonder if this is the end of the USPPA....

This is a common business experience, or tournament winner experience. What you are experiencing is common and stress levels are most likely high for everyone.

How exactly is this a common experience for a tournament winner????

I have never had to wonder if I would get paid when playing a tournament.

Strange perspective.

How many tournaments have you played then had to wait a month for payment?

I must have missed reading your post!

Ha! Pretty funny!

ON THE NOTEPAPER:

"---- Pay the players - NOWAY!"
"Pay myself - YES!"

I have to wonder about this guy who walks around day
and night with a Carpenter's Pencil tucked over his ear and makes
notes on scratch paper constantly ? Do ya' think he made a note
to himself to pay the players ?

Sure hope everyone gets their dough.

Does anybody know who owns the shares of USPPA?

It's a closely held California corp.

Chris

'bumpypickle' mentioned spending the prize money on cheeseburgers.

Alternative theories:

1. bought cues and tables from people retiring from billiard communities
2. hoarding cash
3. spent it at all the nice Reno entertainment establishments
4. paid off a loan
5. put the money up for a quick turn at the roulette table to double the prize fund
6. invested the prize money in order to surprise players with something even better.
7. forget to pay players because of personal issues but has cash available, which can be distributed over the course of a few months. Distribution can't happen all at once because he is protecting the players from blowing all the money on post prize winning high parties.

Its weird, because I was wonder the same thing. I noticed that recently, the name now includes a ",inc." after it. I don't think it used to have that; they may have recently incorporated. Can a corporation have a PO Box as an address? I thought it had to be a physical address. Also, I just searched the Sacramento County records for the USPPA as a Registered Fictitious Business Name and there isn't one.

Just like a Hollywood stage set. Nice storefront but when you look behind, there is no store but only lumber shoring up the front.

Talk like that in a different neighborhood might get you some strange looks.

If don't like the neighborhood don't stick around. People have to make a living.

Fraud as a living won't work in my neighborhood. In fact, in my neighborhood we would be talking about a memorial tournament! Ha!
