usps

USPS, I am done shipping with them, it will be Fedex from now on. I shipped cue Tuesday late afternoon Priority mail
which used to be 2–3-day delivery and it's still not there. I guess Priority don't mean anything anymore. It left Philly Sunday
which is 1 1/2-hour ride from me. I don't get it, they suck!
Never had a problem with USPS Priority Mail. I send legal documents through Priority Mail on a regular basis as I have for years.

This could have a little bit to do with it.

"The USPS relies on contract delivery services to deliver mail, especially in rural or difficult to access areas. To become a contract delivery service, you'll usually need your own vehicle that's in good condition and big enough to carry the mail for your route."

I've run into so many mail delivery people in the last couple of years that are completely unprofessional, many not with uniforms that don't care anything about the job. Everybody has their war stories so I'll post mine.
I put some mail out in the box to be picked up and put the flag up. I happen to go out and see the mail person passed my property and the flag is still up. I look in the box in my mail is still there.

So I chased the guy down he's only maybe a couple hundred yards away and I tell him I had mail to go out you didn't pick it up. He says unless we're making a delivery we don't have to stop at every mailbox. I said even if the flag is up? He said yes.

Now here's the thing that set me off, I've got my mail in my hand and he refuses to take it telling me he doesn't have to. He told me to go drop it in a blue box. I asked him what his name was and he wouldn't tell me but he was wearing a tag and I tried to take a picture of it and he got all defensive.

At that point he went off the air. He starts telling me this is the worst job he's ever had he's going to quit. He moved down here from New York about a year ago and he hates it here and he can't wait to go back and at that point I just walked away. This is at least one example of who's now working for the Post office.

Someone else mentioned about if you want something scanned take it to the Post office. I did that not that long ago, I waited in line and when my turn was up I put my little package in front of the girl and asked if she would scan it that it already had to post to it.

She said no we don't do that just leave it at the end of the counter. I asked can't you just scan it for me now and she said you didn't buy the postage from us so we don't have to do it. I don't even know what that meant.

I asked for the supervisor and in a minute or two she comes out I told her I have this small package I want to have scanned she picked up the scanner and scanned it and just said thank you and left.

What the f*** was the problem with the first person. I'll tell you what the problem was, they gave somebody a little authority who probably shouldn't have any. They can't wait to show you that they're in charge and f*** you.

Free advice. Use registered mail unless it is a cheapo cue you don't care about.

I have never had a shipped package lost though I have a handful be late with one being extremely late. I’m not sure what the rush is about. The buyer paid for a service that is out of your control. If you shipped it correctly and paid for extra insurance, it’s no skin off your back.

I ship in PVC pipes that are large, nearly indestructible and hard to lose.

I doubt nobody would disagree that the post office does an incredible job with an accuracy rate that any hospital would be proud of. They handle billions of pieces of mail. Their system works, but no matter how you look at it it's no better than the people implemented and that's where something has definitely changed.

There was a time working for the Post office was an enviable job. It even had status much like being a school teacher or a police officer. Now it's a job I can't believe anybody would want to do
.. I was going to go to work for the Post office once when I was young. I signed up I took the civil service exam. I scored very high on it and got called right away. The way they used to do it is they would give the exam several times a year and they only took from the top.

So if you didn't score well don't bother sitting around waiting to be called cuz that test is going to be given again and you're going to be pushed even farther down the road.

I turned down the job though with the post office because I had just gotten into the operating engineers Union. I had a job starting at like 3 times the pay of the post office so I forgot all about the post office.

I can rarely get a package from them now that doesn't have a peek hole ripped in the bag to see if it's worth stealing or not.

The bad part is you can't really decide to change shipping companies through places like eBay

Another horror story. When I was living in Hawaii. I ordered a cue from a guy that lived on the East coast. He sent it UPS ground. Saved himself 3 or 4 dollars from the next fastest method.

I tracked this thing for 2 months slowly moving across the country. It gets to Los Angeles and sits for 3 weeks. I call them they tell me it will be leaving on a boat the next week.

Took over 3 months to get that damn cue. Worst part is the seller charged me full shipping cost then nitted out at the counter.

With all due respect, that was your fault. Since you are usually the one paying the shipping you should request how you want it shipped. If he was paying in essence free shipping to you, what did you expect. It is best to ship cues overnight. It cost more but that is just the way it goes. I got a SW cue and they called me when it was being shipped to know the cue was coming and be sure I was ready for it to be delivered. It was sent overnight.

The guy charged me $30 shipping and handling he spent $8.75 on the slowest method they offered when he got to the counter. How is that my fault?

$11 I would have had the cue in a week.

Edit: i didn't even know there was an option that would move that slow. I specified all future sales to not use ups ground.

Yeah I just got an order of ammunition that's how it came it came ground that's the only way to ship it. So that option exists it's just ridiculous to use it for anything other than something that has an an exclusion as far as shipping.

Really the best thing to do imo is ship usps next day. They guarantee the package to most US location in one day if they are late you get full refund. Longest I have seen a package take was 2.5 days and it cost me nothing. If I'm shipping large or heavy packages where the overnight is more than $125 I don't express it. Those always make it next day, but the $80-$50 range you get a refund about 30% of the time. And buyer gets his cue in 2 day tops
Except when it just disappears. And cue just disappeared usps next day. And how did someone steal it or they can’t find a package 36 inches long? Sad and mad is an understatement.

I mailed a cue out last Thursday through USPS and the buyer received their cue 2 days later on Saturday. This was from Las Vegas to Washington state. It only cost $30 to mail with $1000 insurance. Thought it was a good deal

The USPS pre Dejoy was great and went to shit after he came on board. They have never recovered and the morale at the post office is at an all time low. Many of the long time employees left and most of the new employees don't really care about anything other than sick leave and vacation time. Post offices in my area used to always have two or three people at the counter all day. Now they are down to one most of the time. I've seen one person take a long break when there is only one other person working the counter and a long line of customers waiting for service. They just don't care anymore.

Somebody not doing their job (to be spiteful) has nothing to do with their supervisor. I work for a government agency. We are overworked and often have few advancement opportunities.

Most of us take the job for the benefits, security and public service (yes public service). It feels good to help your community.

So it is a red flag to hear you say, if only this guy was boss, then I will work hard...

BullS##t! If you had a work ethic your butt would just do it! And the crack about taking extra breaks while people wait because you don't like your boss...

Nice try! Ridiculous

I'm not sure you read my post. Nothing you said here refers to what I said above, other than where you refer to the post office employees who are there to "help their community." Maybe there are more of them where you live, but they are in short supply here. EVERY post office I've been to in SoCal is understaffed and in the ones that I go to most often, many of the best employees are gone.

I resent you using bullsh-t to describe anything I said. I spoke my truth whether you like it or not. And speaking of "work ethic," try working seven days a week for 22 years, 12-14 hours a day, with the longest vacation maybe three days. That my friend is a work ethic! A forty hour work week is an impossibility when you have your own poolroom. At least if you want to succeed it is.

Yeah, I read what you said. You mention a single person to blame for the state of the Postal Service. I just took offense with what you said.

As for the curse, I apologize for that, I am sure you believe what you wrote. I just disagree completely.

As for your work ethic, I totally believe you work hard.

So we can agree to disagree (no cage match required).

USPS will usually eventually arrive. The key words are usually and eventually- not definitely and timely. that is always the price of government service. For anything of real value, I have shifted my shipping choices to private carriers; just bc I have a bit more faith in their service- but not a lot more faith either!
My experience with USPS was almost uniformly good until the last couple of years when it has gotten progressively worse. Prior to this I would frequently use Priority Mail and the packages got there usually within two days anywhere in the country, with three days the longest. Now Priority Mail will usually take 5-7 days, with up to ten days not being unusual. Books that I shipped by Regular mail used to take four of five days anywhere in the country. Now, the norm is more like seven to ten days. If I used Media Mail, it would take a week to ten days most of the time. Now it can take anywhere from two weeks to a month! I've been told by post office employees that media mail is a low priority for them.

Now for the worst of it. During the period between 2009 and 2019 I lost exactly one package where it turned out the address was one number off (as in 2904 as opposed to 2906). Between 2019 and 2021 I have lost (and I mean LOST!) four packages entirely gone, nowhere to be found in the mail system, even with tracking numbers. One was mailed from my home and the rest were dropped off at the post office. Two were books sent via Media mail, one was a book shipped via Regular mail and one was a package of posters shipped by Priority Mail. The book shipped from my home and one that was dropped at the post office never showed up as being received in the system. The other two were "delayed" en route and never continued to their destination.

Insurance, which is supposed to be $50 on all packages was useless. I tried to make a claim and never got anywhere with the post office, either by appearing in person or applying online. IMO the so called "insurance" was a joke - on me!

All this said, USPS is about 98% successful in making deliveries, without anything being damaged. I've shipped more than a dozen $1,000+ cues via Priority Mail with no problem and no insurance. And a couple dozen more in the $500-1,000 price range. I will continue to use USPS as my best option, but I do so aware that my package may not make it to the destination. I no longer use Media mail for anything.

I'm not blaming Dejoy for everything that has transpired at the post office, but I do hold him responsible for damaging the reputation of the post office, and in so doing lowering morale among many Post Office employees. I think we all know what took place under his watch in the lead up to the 2020 national elections and it wasn't pretty. Most of us see that for exactly what it was, an attempt to undermine the election process. In other words he politicized the post office to favor one candidate over the other. I'm not sure how you rationalize that as being okay, but I don't, then or now!
