Josh Brothers is in the finals of the Open, but I don't know against who.
Josh plays good but is not a pro.

I can see why the players split, just a huge difference in payout. Ididnt go to the event, 800 for second is no reason to drive out and spend a few days on the road.
But for the promoters sponsors and spectators this should be unacceptable. If the event was streamed or PPV would splitting be permitted?If it paid $20,000 over the top 4 spots do the top 4 guys whack it for 5k each? If I ran the event I would make them play, I the split it in the parking lot so be it.

This is one of the things wrong with pool.
I can see doing a saver but not playing the finals is an insult to the
organizers....and if I was a sponsor, that would be my last pool tournament.
aaaaannnnnddddd thats why I don't waste my time with these tournaments. I'm a good player but I'm not driving to valley forge to play in a single elimination tournament with guys like this in it. Double elimination is worth the time.. if I run into one of these monsters and lose I can still make a nice run in the one loss bracket.

I has no problem with splitting the prize money, but I would also support a tournament director requiring all matches be played to be paid.
Josh is damn solid, but I agree that he is still a step below pro. I beat him in a race to 9 tourney in 2012 and I got effectively no chance against the pros. I'd think he has the same win probability over the pros as I do over him, about 1/6- 1/8.
There are the same statements- pro or not- about the winners of this event every year. You bet the winner plays good pool, it is a tough tourney.

I'm usually anti split but pool isn't really about the money to me. The only time I've split is when it's really late and my opponent and I are both want to get the hell out of there before the bar closed lol In this instance with that much of a difference In first and second place I would expect it with two equal players.
Some people show up thinking they have a decent shot to make it to the finals.

Obviously, if the math isn't right for you, you shouldn't play.
But to those who feel the need to complain about good players cause they don't play good enough to compete or make any money...

I am certainly a player that enters even local tournaments for the experience and fun. I guess if you don't play at least your not one of the guys that plays then whines about how it's not fair.
Congrats to the players that finished high... There was a local guy around here that finished 9-16.... He doesn't play near josh and guys like that but he's got heart and plays great. It is JUST a BAR BOX !!
