I saw in the photo gallery on AZ home page that pictures were taken of SVB and Jeff De Luna playing at Bugsy's Lair over in PI. Does anyone know if they were gambling and if so who won? Please let me know. Thanks.

Shane and Jeff got together at Bugsy's last night, but not before Shane got "hustled" again. We got there early and a young man challenged Shane to a game. So it was a quick little race to nine for 2,000p. Just one more young filipino who plays like God! Shane battles his way to a hard fought 9-7 win. There is no easy money in the Philippines. We find out this is Mike Feliciano, who only finished tied for 3rd-4th in the recent Pacman Invitational. 19 or 20 years old and plays high speed 9-Ball. He could cut a swath across the USA!

DeLuna bounces in, full of vim and vigor. He is spunky to say the least, brimming with confidence and bravado. It's his home court, and everyone loves him here. He is greeted all around by his buddies. Shane ignores all this and continues to hit balls. The kid's a PRO!

They agree to play a Race To 21 Ten Ball for $2,000. Mika and Corey take a piece also. Bugsy is Jeff's stakehorse and all he needs. Perry Mariano (Bugsy) is a well respected member of the Philippine pool scene. Even Yen Makabenta makes an appearance here to watch the festivities. DeLuna has a thunderous break, maybe the srongest in pool today. He makes the Ten Ball rack look like 9-Ball on a bar table. But every so often the cue ball gets away, and scratches. Shane is steadier and they both play very good for the first half of the match. Only one or two errors on a super tight (tighter than the tournament tables) Brunswick Metro. Both men are firing balls in from everywhere. It's an impressive display of power pool.

Over here, a "referee" works the money matches, racking balls, calling hits, and marking balls that have been moved. With the score Shane 15, Jeff 9, Shane misses a thin cut on the two ball. Jeff must have thought it was a bad hit, because he picks up the cue ball and takes ball in hand and makes the two. "What" Shane says? He didn't foul! All of us watching saw that it was a good hit. Even the ref, none other than Mike Feliciano appears confused. I jump up and ask the ref what just happened. I ask him if there was a foul. He shakes his head. He knows there was no foul, and so does everyone else. I ask him to make the call, and he hands the cue ball to Shane. Shane runs out for a 16-9 lead.

I approach Yen and Bugsy and tell them I do not want to get involved in the match, but it must be fair for both players. They agree and the match continues. The match gets ragged after this, and both players make numerous errors. They trade games and Shane wins 21-13. It's over for the night, a three hour match. It's 1:30 AM and I have to report for work at 10 AM. We're outa there!

Before we leave, Bugsys asks me if Shane wants to play Gabica tomorrow night. I check with Shane, and naturally he says yes. He is ready to play anyone, even Godzilla. Gotta get back to work. More later.

what does it mean marking balls that have been moved? i saw this a few times in manila where the ref would mark the table with chalk. i could not figure out why.

Shane is just awesome. I find it very impressive that Corey and Mika are there and instead of getting in action they are putting there money in with Shane. He is in my opinion the best pool player on the planet right now. He is beaming with confidence and has no fear of anyone. Not mention he is just a great person. My hats off to you Shane keep up the domination. :)

they put marks around the ball in a relative distance, if the ball move, they will know because the distance would increase or decrease. this is a way to prove to the offending player that he committed a foul, this also prevents doubts on referees, since money games are not in a tournament environment and referees on this kind of match could be anyone knowledgeable enough.

You mean they mark the position of all the balls on the table in each game?

i guess that makes sense. they also did some other things i wasnt used to. like when i made a game they would write the race and amount on the table with chalk. as well as keep the score on the table with chalk. i guess its just another way of keeping people honest. thanks for clearing it up for me.

They mark any ball that might get involve when there is a chance that a guy might accidentally move a ball while trying to hit the cue ball. Like when a guy is over reaching over a ball while trying to hit the cueball. The referee eyeballs it (before a player line's up his/her shot) if a ball might get bump with the cue, hand, arm or shirt and the referee would mark a certain spot that is near to that ball/s. Also any of the players can ask the referee to mark the ball/s

Hope this makes sense...

By "chalk" are you saying white (blackboard chalk) or the blue, tip chalk? Does it get cleaned off before the next game (or set in the case of the bet marking)? And how?

Too bad the ref was going to sleep the call. Good job Jay for keeping them honest.

Yes they were gambling at bugsys lair they put J DeLuna on him to try and show how dominant the phillipinos are shane ate him up in a race to 30 i believe 30 to 17

White old blackboard chack.
Hell, they even use that to mark the score on the CLOTH.
They even use that to write the spot ( weight/handicap )on the board near the table. People bet right before EVERY GAME starts.

Of all the up and coming players from the Philippines, I find Jeff De Luna to be a little too arrogant for my taste. Yes he is talented but so are a lot of other Filipino players who appear to be humble and just let their cues do their talking for them.

BTW, according to Jay's post in the WPC forum (excerpt below), SVB was beaten by Warren Kiamco 28 to 17 so he is not invincible. At their level of play any, nobody can win 100% of the time.

--------------------------------------------------

Went to One Side last night and it was a pool circus. Like a mini Derby City, with good games to watch (and bet on) all over the place. This is a nine table room, and the following matches were going on at the same time. Shane vs. Kiamco for 140,000p (about $3,250), Francisco vs. Orcullo for 150,000p, Alcano vs. Reyes for 100,000p. These were the feature match-ups. Ronnie Wiseman was playing Lolo for 1K, and Niels Feijen was playing an unnamed filipino for $500. ALL were playing long Ten Ball races. Shane's match was to 28, Django's to 25, Efren's to 21 and the other two to 15.

SHANE LOST! Yes, it can happen. He is not invincible. And Warren played good. Even though Shane has had some success with the filipinos, they will keep on challenging him. That's how it is over here. If you are the top gun, everyone wants to play you. It is a big deal to be THE MAN! I mean look at who's playing right now. The very best players continue to challenge each other. And for some serious cash too. That is one big reason they stay on top. This is something that no school in Taiwan can duplicate. JMO of course.

Dennis was close to winning when I left (21-18) and Efren-Alcano was still early. Shane lost 28-17, and Ronnie W. lost 15-13. Niels fell also 15-11. Filipinos rule! Shane and I talked briefly after his match. He will be going back for one more match tonite, before flying out in the morning. He said he would like to come back in February for an extended stay. I told him a month over here and he would come home a better player. There is no shortage of competition for him here, and no one asks for a spot!

Yes, I had a piece of Shane and Wiseman. I made a 10,000p donation to the filipino pool economy. And that's why they love me. They know I will be betting when I show up. One young guy hustled me to play some Ten Ball. I told him we could play some One Pocket or all Banks. They only want to play 9-Ball, Ten Ball or Rotation here. Kind of amazing since the best One Pocket player in the world is Efren. And Busti, Dennis and Parica play great as well. It just hasn't caught on over here yet. Or anywhere else in Asia. But it will
some day I'm sure.

You are not alone in thinking that.
I think he has a Napoleon Syndrome.

I like Dennis Orcullo and Lee Van Corteza more. I want to see SVB match up with Dennis, Lee VAn or even Roberto Gomez too (once he recovers :D ).

IMHO, any of these 3 could would offer a better match for the viewers compared to the Earl/SVB match. Shane's simply too good for Earl at this point.

Orcullo VS SVB would be a match I would love to see.... 10 ball race to 100

A little known fact, at nearly 5'7" tall Napoleon was actually taller than the average Frenchman of his day. I don't know about De Luna.

over there played 'all balls foul' or 'cue ball fouls only'?

The "Texas Express" Filipino way is CB and object ball (lowest numbered ball
in 9 and 10 ball or Rotation) foul only. The ref will put white chalk marks on
balls that could be in the shooter's way. The best example is a jacked up position
where the CB is frozen behind another ball. Ref will put white chalk marks on
the ball that's jacking the player up, and any other ball that the shooter
might inadvertently hit while going through his stroking motion. If the
shooter moves a ball, the ref will quickly put the said ball in it's original
place with the help of the white chalk marks while the shot is still in motion
and it is still considered a good shot UNLESS, the CB or one of the balls
that was put in motion by the shooter legitimately hits the moved ball that
was put back in its original place, and a foul shot will be ruled.

At least that's how I remembered it, FWIW...
