Varner and Appleton tour first couple of days report.

Well the first couple of days here in Reno have been uneventful really. I left Phoenix on Sunday around 2.30pm and flew direct into Reno. I was really trying to rush and make sure I got the 1st shuttle possible to the GSR so I could get checked in and watch the finals of the U.S Bar Table Championship. All went my way, bags came out of the shoot fats the plane was 10 mins early and the line at the front desk was small. I stopped and got myself a 12 pack for the room and I was in. Now I have to find the place where to tourney is at, it was kinda hidden and would have thought it would have had more signage to help. This place is pretty big and it seemed like I walked 5 miles until I found it. I got to see the end of Busti V Thorsten and got to chat with a couple people before the finals. Spoke to Justin a min from (TAR), Mark Griffin, Toastie, Rodney, My buddy Ken Shuman, Lee Brett, Daz. Seemed like everyone was right there just chatting and hanging out so that was nice. The final wasn't that great of a match to be honest but Klatt did a good job.
So I decide to head back to my room and all of a sudden feel drained and tired and hungry all at the same time. By this time its around 6pm and so I watch a little tv and have a couple of beers. I have nothing to do now and bored still feeling really tired and hungry so I went down to Johnny Rockets and got some food and took it back to the room. Chilli fries (a decision I would regret the next day). Nick's flight didn't come in til 10.30pm and its now only 7.30pm.
As some of you may know from my other reports, Nick is very close to his money which is probably a good thing but it still makes me laugh sometimes. So I had looked up the hotel for the best deal and for the time we are here I got $35 per night. Nick told me he thought he could get better and was going to wait and see what he could do at a different hotel maybe. Well come the day of travel he asks "How many beds you got in that room" I tell him 2 and I knew where this was going. He says "well I will just stay with you then." Thats ok, no problem we have roomed together before with no problems.
Anyway, where was I? Ah yes, its 7.30pm I have no idea why but I was tired. I had not done anything really but I know traveling can wear on you. I had told toastie that I felt drained from traveling all day and he asked with a quizical look "Vear deed you come from?" I told him Phoenix And he kinda snorted and laughed. It is a little weak to be tired its not like I was going to the UAE or Phillipines. Anyway I decided to just crash and crash I did until around midnight when my phone started ringing and texts were dinging me awake. Nick had arrived and needed to know what room. So I told him and got out of bed knowing he wasn't gonna just come in and go to sleep. I was half right Nick had been traveling all day and was very tired too but we chatted for a while until I began just grunting my responses and I went back to sleep til 7.45am. So almost 12hrs sleep. Nick slept til around noon and so I was kinda stuck, I didn't t want to make too much noise and so I just went and got coffee and walked around the casino for a while and arranged for us all to meet for lunch so we could go over the game plan for the show that night and a forcast of how things would go the rest of the trip. Well I didn't realize that Nick and Darren really have not spent much time together talking or anything other than at the Mosconi Cup and so as much as I tried to get the order of business addressed all they wanted to talk about was the Last IPT event as it was held at the GSR and the bar tables championships and just about anything pool. Very interesting actually to hear their thoughts but I had a job to do here and I was gonna get it done. So I waited til our food came that way I could get a word in and that worked. We arranged to meet up again at 7pm to go to the show at Diamond Billiards. This was the first time we had done a show with Darren and although Nick and I have done a hundred of these things together and know exactly what happens when Darren doesn't other than an explanation I gave him earlier. We don't know if he is going to be quiet and reserved etc. We lead him into each section of the show so he knew what he was supposed to be doing all the time and he was great. Very happy with his performance, he ran racks and talked in detail about what he was thinking and why and how he planned to execute each shot all with a smile on his face. Thats all we can ask for. We had poked a little fun at Nick on the way to the show because I have always been to but of the joke saying I talk funny and they couldn't understand a word I said while with JA or Earl and so this was my chance to give him a taste of his own meds :) So we harrassed him for a little while since there are 2 of us now but he didn't take it laying down. He explaned that Darren and I should go and have sex with ourselves, and that we should not even be allowed to talk in this country if an American wanted to talk first I am sure you get the idea. So when I was introducing the guys I thought I would have a dig at Darren as his accent is much thicker than mine and said "here is the only guy in the room that talks funnier than I do." Darren looked right at Nick and said "He must be talking about you pal" Nick didn't quite get it at first and snapped back "I think he was talking about you" so they are both now wondering who I am having a dig at. It may be one of those that you had to be there. During a little break he told me how much he enjoyed everything he was doing and having a good time with the spectators. Thats a bonus, if you are enjoying yourself I think the people involved with the shows and clinics can feel if someone is having a good time or not. Darren also told me that he really enjoys teaching so there are going to be some lucky people taking clinics on this trip.
After the show we were all hungry and it was about midnight and so we went to the Atlantis on the way back for some breakfast. Daz and I were starving and I think we went a little overboard with our orders and maybe ate too fast along with it cos we both were not feeling that great after we got done. Got back to the GSR and in bed about 1.30am and straight to sleep. We will be leaving for Redding tomorrow morning and have a show at night at Hotshots Family Billiards. Starts at 7.30pm. Who knows what today will bring, gonna meet up with Darren about 1pm probably for something to eat. I will be back maybe.

Could you provide us with the touring schedule? thx.
Great news for the Legends and Champions March Tour, featuring two time World Champion and two time U.S Open Champion "Dynamite" Darren Appleton and eight time World Champion and Hall of Famer "The Kentucky Colonel" Nick Varner. The Tour has been extended to add two more stops in Colorado. We are especially excited about these additions as we have joined forces with Str8-Shots Darts and Billiards and The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) This gives us a great opportunity to try and give a little back to the future of the game and many thanks to Samm Diep Vidal of Felt and the BEF and also Kimberly Griffith of Str8-Shots for giving us this opportunity. Part of the proceeds from the weekend in Denver will be going to the BEF and Darren and Nick will be spending some time with the Junior players on Saturday to have a little fun and hold a private clinic for the Junior players. Below is the revised schedule for the Legends and Champions March Tour. If your are in the area, please come and show your support to all the pool rooms and sponsors for these events. Any questions feel free to email me at cantrillmark@yahoo.com or call 480-612-7732.

Latest news, due to a conflict Darren Appleton will not be part of the shows for the last 2 stops in Colorado Taking his place will be World Champion Thorsten Hohmann. Just FYI

Hey there, Mark.

I'm really looking forward to the seminar this weekend, followed the very next day by the beginning of our regional BCA event. It sounds like Darren will be having more fun than he expected! It'll be a pleasure to spend the day with you three.

I thought that you had sent me the information for the location, but I can't find it anywhere. Could you resend?

Thanks!
-John

How much do the clinics cost? Are the exhibitions/shows free to the public?
Allen, the clinics are limited to 12 people, then split into 2 groups. One group works with Nick Varner for 2hrs and the other group works with Darren Appleton for 2hrs. After 2hrs the groups switch and spend 2hrs with the other pro. The fee is $200 per person.
As far as the shows/exhibitions go that is up to the location as they pay us to be there and they sometimes charge and sometimes don't. If you are interested in attending just give the location a call and they will let you know. Thanks for your interest.

Mark

Next 2 days,

Well we Headed out from Reno to Redding yesterday morning about 10am. Stopped at McDonalds to get some food before the Drive. Darren and I got the basic McMuffins and Nick wanted to get the "Big Breakfast meal" So by the time Nick's food was ready we were done eating. We told Nick we are going to save some time and go fill the tank. He was fine with that and off we went. We came back and pulled up right besided the big window where Nick was eating and honked a couple of times, and he glanced over at us no smile just a blank expression as if we were not even there. He saw us because we were parked illegally sideways and the only car in that area. I called him and he answered and looked straight out at us. I said "Hey Nick, I just wanted tell you to just take your time in there, don't rush" He said "Oh ok, I will take it easy then" Maybe just proving a point that he will not be rushed.
The only reason for the rush at all was we had been told that a big storm was gonna be coming through Donner Pass (Yes, the famous Donner Party who got stuck on that pass in a snow storm and ended up eating each other) So we had decided to take the long route and go south to Sacramento and back up to Redding. This would take us an hour longer to get there and hoped there would be no storm problems. The sky looked cloudy, grey, snow on the mountains in the distance and so wasn't looking good. Having said that I am not exactly sure how we came to our next last minute decision. I think we saw Semi trucks going the way we wanted to go through Donner pass and thought if they can make it so can we. So we went the dangerous way. Not too long into the drive the snow started coming down it was a light kind of snow but lots of it. "Oh shit here we go" Then it cleared up all of a sudden and we were all a little less on edge. A few spots as we went were thick snow but just slowed down a bit and we were good again. Darren loved the scenery, he said "We have to take some pictures, this is like the stuff you see in the movies" He does not realize that this scenery was about a 3 or 4 compaired with what we still have to see on the rest of this trip. We did stop and take some pictures in the snow.
We chatted the whole way there about one thing or another so the trip went pretty quick and we arrived in Redding around 3pm. Enough time to relax and I got to make some calls and work on plans for the rest of the trip. Nick was still feeling a little under the weather with some kind of 24hr bug and so he slept the afternoon away and Darren went to the hotel restaurant and ate fish and chips AGAIN. This is maybe the 4th time he has had fish and chips that I have seen in the past 4 days. Hey I'm English and like fish and chips but Daz is fanatical. I think he said he took a nap after eating. Well off we went to the show, small crowd but hey that happens sometimes especially in a small town.
We left and wanted to eat at the "Lumber Jack" love that place for a breakfast but it was closed and so we ended up at Denny's Nick wan't up for eating anything but he hadn't eated anything since breakfast and thats not like Nick at all so we got him some chicken noodle soup and said he had to try. We got done and Nick had eated some and Darren and I ate the lot. Ready to go back to the hotel and get some sleep and think about what tomorrow will bring.
Its a lovely day in Northern California sunny and you can see the snow capped mountains in the distance. Nick Woke up feeling much better and wanted to go to Red Lobster as he had tried their fish and chips a few weeks ago and they were great he said. So guess who decided to go along??? yup The fish and Chips addict. So I decided I wasn't hungry just yet and I stayed at the hotel to work and got some done and write this. Tomorrow is going to be a good day and looking forward to the drive actually since the scenery is great. Wish I had more to tell but alot of fun so far even if the results of the trip so far have not been what I would have liked. There is more to the story that I will let you in on when the time is right. I have to wait and see something before I say anything.
I spoke with my buddy Dave Smith at Rack'em Billiards in Medford and may stop by there on our way to Portland tomorrow. I have written before about the Halibut he catches and makes a great batter for us when we go through their. Nick and I still talk about that Fish and Chips so maybe Darren will be on 6 fish and chips in 6 days :) More to come.

Thanks Terry, There will be more about Nick as we go I am sure. Hope all is well with you buddy.

Mark, it was a pleasure to meet Darren, Nick and yourself. You guys must've done some special recruiting to get another Brit in the crowd, too!

Nick had some interesting things to say at the beginning and his explanations made perfect sense. Some of the things I had already been doing, but to hear it from a champion of his caliber made it feel good to know. He had tons of other information about set-up and approach that I've been waiting to work on. Darren's notes on "Mr. Inconsistency" have been stuck in my head, too. Now that the big tournament at the coast is over, I'll focus on that for a while.

Mark had told me to bring whatever I wanted to drink. Corona was on the menu the whole time, from 11 until the evening. He grilled up some burgers and we had a lunch fitting of such a nice day. Joe's got a nice view from his balcony, so we ate lunch up there and took advantage of the sunshine. I wonder how well Mark does ribs.. next year, maybe?

Towards the end, we played some scotch doubles with Nick and Darren getting partners. I appeared to be the weakest link there.. first, missing two banks(I'll hear it for that) and then just dogging an easy shot later on trying too hard to do something for leave. Finally ran a rack after we played some singles among the group, so my confidence started seeping back in.

I had wanted to stay a bit longer, but the next day I had to leave for the tournament at the coast and wanted to spend a little more time with the girlfriend. Next year, I'll set aside a little more time before and after, leaving more time for the event.

Thanks again, Mark, it's something that I'll remember for a long time. Even though, I'll be looking forward to making it again.

St. Louis is not on the schedule............is this an oversight.

John
Actually not an oversight John, we only had so much time to fit all these stops in. I am already looking at late May/early June to do a tour that will probably beging in St Louis. At this point I am not sure about exact dates or players and it will be hard to figure out as I am a little at the mercy of Bonus Ball's start date. Once it starts I will not have the same choice of players and will have to work around that while still brining a quality show and clinic with top talent. Hope we can make it happen and I will of course be posting on here as I progress. I have been sooo busy the past few days that I have not had a chance to finish my reports. I started the other day and my computer froze up and I was about 40 mins into it and basicalkly threw in the towel and there is so much to write. I like the event we did a couple of years ago in St Louis so hopefully we can make it happen.
