Very early origional Bill Stroud made Joss

Billy The Kid

I have a very early (1969-70) Bill Stroud made Joss cue. This cue is truly a players cue and is still rock solid and straight as an arrow. She has been played a lot, but is in remarkable shape. It is a 4 pt, multi-color veneer, with rosewood insert and rosewood butt. Stainless joint 5/16 x 18.
Origional Cortland wrap is in excellent condition. Comes with 2 (28.75") maple shafts, one with ivory ferrule and one more yellow (perhaps micarta). Butt length is 28.75". Overall 57.5".

I have personally owned the cue from the early 70's. It was purchased and played with in Shreveport, LA., home of cue maker Billy Schick. Billy knows the cue and could vouch for my authenticity. As far as the cue being made by Bill Stroud, he said so - and I have written statement from him to that effect. It's not marked.

I'm probably giving it away, but I'll take $1,000.00.

Old Joss

Thanks for everyone's interest.

A little more data. Shafts both measure 13mm. Weight (on my primitive equipment) is approx. 21 oz. No, the ivory ferrule is not cracked. What you see in the picture is just the grain.

Since I have retired from playing, I am not interested in any trades - except for greenbacks !! $$$$

I had a cue exactly like the one listed here that I sold last year at the DCC. It had the same 5/16 18 pin which I found out that they did not make very many of because people preferred the 5/16 14. Just like this one, mine had no marking on it anywhere but was identical down to the ringwork except for mine had a single pearl inlay in each point. When I got it I was told that it was a 68 to 72 Joss and that Danny Janes would put the name back on it. I contacted Danny and he was more than helpful, I sent the cue back to him and he said it was a cue that he had made but to put the name back on it might cause the old buttcap to crack. He made me a nice letter of authinticity with pictures of the cue instead. I sold the cue for $1200 in a flash but now kinda wish I would have kept it. Hope this helps.

$take Hor$e, wow they are almost identical. Bill said the cue was made about 69-70. He and Danny were together at that time. Who knows which one made it? Does it really matter? They both do a great job with their "custom" made cues. Thanks for the info. I think my pricing is about right. I played with this cue for many a year and would really like to find her a good home. When Joss first got started, they sold some cues to a pool hall here in Shreveport at that time. Was home to some pretty good players, such as the like of Buddy Hall and Eddie Taylor. This cue probably lost some $$ to both. Ha Ha (But not necessarily always)

To me, none of these appear to be one of John Davis' blanks.

Can the cue's weight be modified - lightened, naturally.
Thanks,
David

P.S.: I have sent you a Private message. You may see it by going to the TOP RIGHT corner of the page. In case you cannot find it, let me know. Thank you.

I do not believe it is a Davis blank. I think that both Bill and Dan made their own splices at that time.

As far as making a cue lighter, You could always have some material taken off, but not sure if it would be a good idea.

oh okay :D

it's just the black orange green and natural veneers in that order reminded me of them.

Absolutely positively NOT a Davis blank!

It's a beautiful forearm that SCREAMS early Joss. Though they collaborated on all cues during this period, this is pure STROUD.

FYI, the veneer colors are actually classic Balabushka.

Super, super cue here at a great price.

Thanks. You learn something new every day :D

Dang it I would have bought this about 3 weeks ago. spent my bankroll on a searing.

If you really want this cue badly, I'll give you the $1000 asking price for your Searing and you can then have the money to get this cue! Let me know and I'll pm you my mailing address.:thumbup:

I had an early block lettered 4 pointer a few years ago, and the delrin had been cracked by the previous owner. I contacted Dan and he stated that he would replace the butt cap, but only with his newer material, and he would put the current logo on the cue. He would not do anything else, and it would be illegal for anyone else to replace it as original with the "scratched" logo. The cue's value, in my opinion, was ruined from that point forward even if it had a LOA. I have not owned a Joss since, and don't plan to unless I find a real steal. To each his own, I guess.

Nice cue, by the way. Good luck with the sale. I hope you sell it with the funds I pay out for my new Searing noted above!!!!

Blanks

Joss Cues made all their blanks. They did provide Guss with some blanks when he first started.
Nick :)
