I have come across a very rare TV interview with a lot of old timers on it. If anyone is interested in seeing it, email me at windycityopen@aol.com and I will send it to you. You will need a Real Player to view this but it's worth it.

Thanks to Wendy, we now have a link!

Here is some of the info. I will also be sending it out with my newsletter this week.

"As it turned out, the 1972 meeting would be the last. The Feds had decided to raid the tournament, of which gambling was a significant component. Agents were, in fact, in the crowd the night Dick and his crew filmed the action. They were poised to take the joint down---but decided it would not be appropriate with cameras rolling. They therefore waited until the following night. (No convictions resulted from the raid. But the Johnston City event became history)."

Thanks for posting that i enjoyed it. I wish there was more footage from that era.

NoStroke...You're right, there's no "interview" with anyone except Fats (whom Dick Kay calls the "king of the hustlers" LOL)...and it's only 10 seconds out of the 3 1/2 minute piece! Cool old news bit, though! :D

All I know is his real name was Charles Red.

Here's a nice list of some nick names used along with their real names.

I posted that video yesterday in another thread.

Here is the link to the video. Just right click on it and you can save it to your harddrive

I thought I had saved it to my hard drive, but it appears that the file is really just a link to open the video. Notice the file size is tiny, and if you open the file in a text editor, you can see it just contains one line. So if you try to open the file later, without a connection to the internet, it won't work. At least that was my experience.

It seems you can save the actual video from here, though, with a right-click -> Save Target As...

You are correct, my mistake,

I'm glad you caught that because if they ever remove that from the site it is on, that link would no longer work. Since I am always connected to the net, I probably never would have caught it.

Here is the full video. You can right click on this and it will download the actual movie, 2.5 megs

Charles "Dirty, Low-Down Red" Jones

Hey, can someone tell me anything about Low Down Dirty Red. His name intrigues me.

He was also called Preacher Red. He died a little over a year ago in Vegas at about age 78. His mother attended the funeral. The "Red" part of his name came from him being a light-skinned black man. The "Dirty, low down" came from his incessant sharking techniques. I had him rated in the top three, all-time sharkers, along with Ronnie Allen and Alphonso "Fonzi" Daniels. The "Preacher" nickname came all the pool hustling and gambling sermons he would deliver to his opponents. Late in life he got a nickname promotion from Eddie the Hat Burton to Dirty, Low-Down, STINKIN Red.

That would be Preacher Red. Charles Jones was his real name. He was an angular black man over six feet in height.

He died about 4-5 years ago in Vegas. A pretty fair One Pocket player. His M.O. included hustling kids and newcomers to the pool racket. If he had a tough game, he was not beneath stealing balls from his opponents pocket or where they were racked up to keep score.

Another move I was the recepient of was having him move balls on the table when you were not paying attention. I played Red for the first time at 4th and Main in downtown Los Angeles in the late 60's. We played for ten a game and he tried every move imaginable to beat me. And he played good on top of it. I knew he was a bad guy and yet I played him a couple more times after that. I wanted games so bad, that I would play a rattlesnake back then.

Red was known to carry a gun (and a large caliber one at that) and brandish it if he had a problem with someone. He played in a tournament in Birmingham. AL in the 70's (the James Gaston Memorial) where the players got stiffed. Paulie Jansco was involved in that promotion. They owed him something like $400 and he pulled his gun and demanded payment. He got paid!

I never met Paulie or George Jansco but I feel like I know them from the stories I have heard over the years from Sadie (George's wife) and JoAnn (George's daughter). Sadie died several years ago but she ran JJ's Ranch, a bar located between West Frankfort and Johnston City for many many years. That place was my second home and I was, and am, friends with JoAnn and her husband. JoAnn and her husband own a 9 hole golf course called the Stardust in Johnston city.

Sadie was a character and she had a thousand stories to tell. JoAnn would tell the stories that Sadie didn't want to tell. :)

Here's a short story about Fatty by a guy named Blackie.

Believe me, "Fats" could empty a grocery store .

We are at Johnston City, Illinois for the very first tournament that Jan and Paulie Jansco had. The year is 61. This was the first year that the Jansco brothers had their tournament. One pocket was the only game being played. Jersey Red, Tom Holiday, and me had gotten there too late to get in. We were there for the action now.

When it came time to eat, a lot of the player's in the tournament were going to West Frankfort, a town a few miles from Johnston City. They had a smorgasbord restaurant there that was all you could eat for $1.25. The owner liked the business that the pool tournament was bringing. Having some of the most famous names in billiards eating at his place, AND That included Minnesota Fats. He was doing what he could to really break and run out on the food. Have no doubt about it. If he played pool as well as he could eat, there would be no need to have the tournament. Just go ahead and give the money to Fats.

Most of us were getting up from eating and going to the register at the front to pay our tabs. I'll never forget the owner standing and saying to us how he appreciated our business. He was saying that us folks from the pool hall were more than welcome to come back anytime, and as he was saying this, he turned and looked directly at Fats. As for you, don't ever come back and forget the address.

So help me, the truth. Blackie

Good story!

A friend of mine went out to dinner with Fats at a deli. It was rumored that Fats couldnt read or write, so when the waitress asked Fats for his order, he told the waitress, "Just give me every sandwich on that page." and proceeded to eat all she brought.

Freddy...Jack White told me "At eating, Fatty could spot the world the six!" LMAO...and that coming from another 'big guy' who was a three-time Olympic gold medal winner, in the knife & fork event! :D
