Vibrating sound

Hi all, here's my question/problem...

When tapping the cue just below the joint with my hand to let it vibrate I hear a sound like a "trrrrr" with both shafts... what could it be?

Loose weight bolt, loose or cracked ferrule, loose joint pin or other joint hardware, faulty "A" joint, etc. The vibrations flow out to the ends of the cue, especially out through the tip end, so this is where the sound escapes. A loose weight bolt or bumper screw will make a sound coming from the tip.

Take the shaft out. Take the weight bolt out.
Hold the bottom very gently with your index finger and bounce the middle of the forearm in the hell of your left wrist.
Bounce it.
If you still hear a buzz or a rattle, that's bad news.

It appears you have what is refered to as a "buzz". This sound can be produced by several different causes. The easiest to remedy is a loose weight bolt in the butt. If this is the case, you are in luck. Simply remove the bumper and tighten the bolt.
This buzz is often in the area of the cue that is where the forearm is joined to the handle section. If that is the case, the cue is fixable but will be expensive. The butt sleeve and forearm can be saved, but the handle section will be lost. If it has a wrap, no problem. If its a wrapless, that means a new handle section.
This buzz is usually caused by an air pocket inside the cue where the connecting bolt is joining the handle section to the forearm. This is very preventable. Anyone interested in how, let me know. I'll be happy to share.

About the maker I don't know if it's right to say who he is, but... When I bought the cue new just finished, I've asked him about this sound that at the time was produced just with one shaft.. He answered to my question telling me that I shouldn't have worried about that sound cause I was tapping the cue in the wrong manner by keeping the cue in a vertical position while it is supposed to work in a horizontal position... At that time he confused me, but after some thoughts and my experience with cues I think he told me some bullshit because of al the cues I've had none of them has had this or any kind of sound when tapping them...

One thing that might help in the analysis: I tried today to put a paper napkin between the shaft and the butt letting the pin pass through a hole and then screwing the cue toghether and the sound seemed a little less loud..

Everyone who has posted here has given some really good advise. However, there is another possible cause for the sound you are hearing. Sometimes when a cue is taped at an off angle from the side like you are talking about the Phenolic collars at the joint will rubb and make a vibration / buzz. Try rubbing a small amount of wax around the collar on the shaft and the butt and put it back together. Then try it, it is very possible that something this simple may take care of your problem if all else fails.

This happened to a custom cue I bought once.
I had a buzz when joined.
He refaced the butt and it fixed it.

Is it only making this noise with the shafts screwed tight on the butt?

Try to tone tap just the butt and let us know whats happening.

Ok I've tried all the tests you suggested me and the sounds persists when the cue is screwed toghether with both shafts...
the only test that I haven't tried is the one with wax.. can you explain me what kind of wax should I put and how?

Use any carnuba based wax, automotive paste wax works well. Put a little on a rag and rub it on th joint area, especially the Phenolic, and wipe off the excess. Thats about all that is to it.

From the tests I've conducted after your suggestions I think I need my shaft and joint to be refaced.. Now I want to know if it is something that anyone with a lathe, like someone who just changes tips, can do or I need a cuemaker to do the job.
I' m asking this cause in Italy there's not much real cuemakers..

IMO the correct way is to put the butt and shafts between centers on a lathe that has been properly set up for the facing operation. You can face them with the collars hanging out of the chuck but run the chance of still not being 90 degrees to the center line of the cue. But if they're that bad and you have no choice, the second option would be better than none.

I usualy find this on cues with metal joints that are just a tiny bit loose. smetimes they will only move a few thousands, but that is all it takes to make them vibrate.
wrap the joint with leather, gently use pliers to tighten it back down, see if it goes away.
