Was unwrapping an old cue and found this handle wood. I don't think it's maple.

It's not an import.

Any thoughts?

I just showed it to our favorite cue repair guy....he thinks it's maple.

...cleaning it off would make it easier to judge.

I don't think it is Maple, it has characteristics of Oak. I don't think its Oak either.
Sorry I am not much help:embarrassed2:

I have an old snooker cue crafted from pearwood which looks very much like maple. A possibility, perhaps?

The beauty of pear from a pool player's perspective is that it remains silky smooth, whereas maple can become sticky on occasion.

The Medullary rays in your pics look a bit like Valley Oak wood.

First and foremost....sand it clean then post pics, as that will affect how it looks. To me, looks like old school maple, but could be wrong...
BTW, did you get my pm?

In many ways. it looks like quarter sawn white oak or even quarter sawn Canadian mountain maple, shown below. Whatever it is, I believe it takes on this unusual look because of the cut.
