Viva Las Vegas....(or not)

Hi everyone.

I first want to start with an apology for not making it onto the forum the whole time I was in Vegas. I feel very bad about that because I always try hard to give an inside view of the tournament. I was having trouble connecting at the hotel. It will not happen again...I promise.

Now, onto the tournament. UGGGHHH....well it was bound to happen, a bad tournament. First, I walked into the tournament room and saw tables I had never seen before, Connelly home tables. Then the draw...first round is Angela Belding from Canada. I didn't know what to expect except for pooljunkie telling me about his friend from Canada....turns out it is her. It started as an ok match. I pulled way ahead 8-3 and then couldn't make a ball. She is an incredible shot maker and had no fear whatsoever. When the score was 8-6 she hung up the nine for me to win. She is a good player and I hope she gets a chance to play in more tournaments in the future.

Second round, Kim White. Yet another ugly match. Kim and I both found out that on these tables hitting the balls into the pockets just didn't work well. I got some bad rolls and Kim made a great out to win the match. The final score was 9-7.

Third round, Lisa Marr. This match started out horrible for me and great for Lisa. I was losing 5-1 and then 8-5. I came back 8-8 with me breaking. I broke and made 3 balls and seemed to be dead out. Well...I left myself a shot that I hadn't made all week on the 8. I was concentrating on making the 8 and I did. Then when I turn thinking I have ended up with perfect shape on the 9, the cue ball is still rolling and stops on top of the 9. I try the do or die bank but it just didn't work out. Lisa had to make a cross-side bank and nailed it. Congrats to Lisa who earned her Touring Pro status.

I have to say the highlight of the whole 10 days in Vegas was doing the Celebrity Pro-Am. I had the pleasure of meeting alot of new people and playing a ton of challenge matches. That night myself and many others raised a good sum of money for the Billiard Education Foundation. It was a ton of fun and my first experience with anything like that.

It was also very nice to meet some of you that post and lurk here on the forum. Steve C (even though you were rooting on the Canadians :)), wakuljr, and others that I am sure I am forgetting right now. If I didn't get a chance to meet you, my apologies. I look forward to meeting you in the future.

So all-in-all it was an alright trip. Hopefully the next tournament will be better. My apologies again for not keeping things updated.

Take care everyone and talk to you soon.

Sarah

Thank you Gold and Yobagua. You have both given me a tremendous amount of support and I truly appreciate it. Hopefully next tournament I will give you a few more rounds to cheer me on :)

Take care,
Sarah

Sarah,

You are just getting warmed up for when I have a chance to see you again.

All jokes aside, you get in there next time and tear it up. I am sure you are approaching bigger and better things in the near future.

In the meantime, keep up the good work. We are rooting for you and Melissa!!!

Sounds like you had a good time in "Lost Wages" overall Sarah. I'm sure your next tournament will go better.

What did you think of the Connelly home tables? Did you like the way they played overall? And do you have a personal favorite type of table?

Jerry, I hope you are right. I am just waiting for a bigger and better time to do well (if there is bigger and better than Vegas!!). I think I will be alright.

Vader, hopefully Las Vegas will treat me better next time. The Connelly tables are not bad tables I am sure, but they are not made for tournaments. I myself really like the Brunswick tables and two of my favorites would have to be Diamond and Gabriel tables. I shouldn't complain though. At least I have the opportunity to be out there playing.

Take care,
Sarah

Sarah -- I was in Vegas for the whole week (only as a spectator). Enjoyed watching you play your first two matches (missed the third). You're a class act, and I hope you continue to climb up the WPBA ladder.

Best wishes,
George

Thank you very much George. I'm sorry I didn't give you more to watch. I hope you enjoyed your trip to Vegas.

Take care,
Sarah

I'm sure things will go better for you next time in Vegas. And yes, you should be glad to have the opportunity to be out there playing.

If I remember correctly, the ladies used to play on Connelly tables at some of their events back in the early 90's, but as the decade went along I believe more and more Brunswick tables were being used, mostly Gold Crowns.

Anyway, hope all is well. Take care. :)

I believe you are right Vader, the women did use Connelly tables before. That was before my time though. It has been all Brunswick with the exception of the BCA tournament. There is a different table there every year. Last year we used Olhausen tables.

I went back through some old video and sure enough, Connelly was featured in the '93 WPBA Nationals which Loree Jon won. Those tables from that event looked similar to the table pictures I've seen from this year's BCA so perhaps it was the same style of table.

I don't recall seeing Diamond in a ladies event. Have they been used yet?

At least one of the classic matches shown last month (1997?) was played on a Kasson table.

IIRC Brunswick became the official full-time table and table light sponsor beginning in 2000.

Vader...Connelly, Kasson, and Olhausen have all been sponsors of the women's tour. I believe someone told me that in the past there were different tables at each tournament. But like I said, that was before my time so I am not sure.

Diamond has not sponsored a tournament but I hope they get a chance to, possibly at the BCA, sometime in the near future.

Wally...you are right, Brunswick has been the sponsor of the tour for the past few years. The WPBA recently sighned a contract with Brunswick for the next three years as well.

Take care,
Sarah

I didn't think Diamond had been featured on the ladies tour yet. Hopefully they will sometime in the future as their product is quite nice, better than Brunswick's in my opinion.

I think we will definitely see Diamonds at future BCA events, and probably some others. Mark Griffin, the new owner of the BCA league system, is a partner with Diamond and has openly stated that his compensation will come from Diamond and that one of his purposes in buying the BCA league system was to promote Diamond tables. Don't want to redirect the thread to that. Just mentioning it because it means we will definitely see more Diamond tables. But then...I don't know how that might impact WPBA sponsors.

hey sarah, do youthink you might come back and play in allen hpkins las vegas open in august, during the APA nationals.

gwvavases...I hope your prediction about Diamond turns out to be true. Although, at the players meeting they announced that the current BCA had not sold the Junior Nationals or the Pro tournament along with the league system. I'm not sure how it all works, it is just what I heard.

wakuljr...I haven't heard anything about the tournament in August. I would definitely like play in any tournament that comes up. I will have to look into it.

Take care,
Sarah

hey sarah. i have been looking around and don't see anything about allen doing his tourny here in aug. i think maybe i'll give him a call and find out. he has had the last 2 years. running it along side the a.p.a. nationals aug. 20-28. busta won it last year, beat ralf in the finals. i will let you know what he tells me...........john

Thank you John. I would like to know about it. Maybe someway I can make it there. It sounds like a great tournament.

Take care,
Sarah
