Vote for Austin Murphy

I'll vote

You got my vote Austin! I have seen you play in numerous tournaments around the Bay area, and am very impressed with your ability. Good luck I hope you make it.

On a side note: Runoutalloveryou since you are so unimpressed by the kid's talent, I'll put the kid up against you for a 10,000 challenge match. Just tell me where and when. Also maybe we can get TAR to film you get beat. Put up or shut up!

Movin' on uuup

Thanks for the support you guys. I just might sneak out a win here. I'm almost up to 5th and that would put me just 3 spots away. Then I'll have to try and sneak out another win if I get there.

I really want to play for the Mosconi Cup some day and to get there I need as many big matches as I can get.

Austin Murphy

We'll break him.

The pool community is going to turn this kid into a degenerate yet. Let's see how long it takes. Start time is 11:19pm 4-1-08.

Austin,

I am very happy to hear that you are doing well in school and you have plans for a good college education. This is very rare in this sport, as I'm sure you already know.
I wish you all of the luck in the world, but I still can't, with a clear mind, support your interest in playing in this challenge match.
I'm very sorry. I just wish you were a little bit older.

In any case, regardless of how this turns out, I wish you luck in your future.

It's not rare that young pool players have plans for college. It's rare that they go to college.
If Austin was a little bit older wouldn't that make him just another pool player? His age is what is taking him to the # 4 spot, not his skill.

I agree.

I guess that is the reason you didn't vote for Souquet. I mean, come on, he was 39 when he lost to Alcano, and he cried... What a loser, heh?
How did you know? Great minds think alike I guess. I don't like the accent either. Would you like some Koolaid?

And to some, his age is the only cause for opposition.
He has proven his talent and is a tough opponent.

Make it a National contest, Let's put an American in the match.

Austin,

It is good to see that your parents help keep your priorities in line. Education is no joke, glad to hear that you are doing so well in school.

I wish you well in your pool career, dreams keep us all going. You have the potential to be a champion if you keep your head on straight. Some of the comments that have been given are in very poor taste but that is the risk that you take when in the public eye.

Mistakes happen, as long as you are learning from each one and careful not to make the same one twice, you should be fine. They are all part of growing up. Best of luck to you and your future. I did send a few votes your way myself.

Peace, MOJOE

Knowing the type of family he comes from, my guess is that he actually does make it to college. Of course time will tell for sure.

What has taken him to the #4 spot is his skill for his age (good enough to give pros all they can handle and to come out on top with them often enough at age 14) so you are only partially right. And it might just take him to the #2 spot.

Here is the current ranking which can be seen here http://www.internationalpooltour.com/EventVoting/votingresults.aspx :
Vilmos Foldes Hungary 17.14%
Efren Reyes Phillipines 12.21%
Gerda Hofstatter Austria 9.30%
Austin Murphy United States 8.87%
Earl Strickland United States 6.09%

Everybody 6th place and down is at less than 5% and is probably a long shot at this point. Here are my thoughts. Vilmos Foldes (who plays great even though he does not have many US fans) is probably a lock at this point, so it seems it is only a matter of who his opponent will be.

I don't want to see Efren in this match because he is already scheduled for an upcoming challenge match (the next one I think?) against Mike Sigel and we will be seeing him very soon. I don't want to see Gerda who is probably not even in the top 10 women anymore. I do not want to see Earl because we just saw him in the last challenge match, and besides that he is a jerk who probably doesn't deserve another one of these matches so soon (even though he makes for fun viewing sometimes).

That leaves Austin, who is the best of those that still have a legimate chance of making #2 at this point, and is a good choice in his own right for several reasons. He is a good kid, who has his priorities straight and deserves a chance like this. He would be setting aside a large portion of any winnings for his college fund. He plays well, and would give a good match to anybody listed. He is American, and my national pride wants to see an American in the match. The novelty of seeing a 14 year old give an established pro all he could handle would make for a good match, especially if he were to pull out the win. And finally, even though he is not the favorite on paper, he does have a LEGITIMATE chance to win, and is not nearly the underdog that some believe. Unless something major changes, my votes will be going to Austin from here on out.
