Knocking is free sport. That's why there are always more railbirds than players. It's not just the knocking of the pros it's the knocking of everything and everyone. Knocking breeds argument which causes threads to way longer than they normally would.
And let's all not forget that for some people knocking is a way of life. They don't just knock here they knock everywhere. And all of us have been guilty of the knock from time to time. Some of us have deserved to be knocked from time to time.
The thing that gets me isn't the criticism. I mean anytime someone puts themselves out there, like a pro does, or a product out there, like we do, then criticism has to be expected and dealt with. How those comments are dealt with is part of being a pro.
But when the knocks are just mean spirited and endless then it wears you down and takes all the fun out being in a place like this. Banter is cool, answering critics is fine and can be fun, defending against maliciousness though is really hard on your soul.
And people will say then grow a thick skin if you want to play here. That's partially right, it takes a thick skin for a pro to interact with the public. Let's face it as well that among any group of people some will want to erect statues and others will want to tear them down. That's simply human nature, some respect and admire and even worship the accomplishments of professionals while others harbor jealously and resentment over what they see as special treatment of pros. And others still aren't jealous or resentful they just don't care and feel like it's ok to be hurtful and mean just for sport.
This unfortunately is going to be the same until the end of time. Now we live in an era when billions of people have global reach. And most of the world's population is not yet online. That's billions of people each with his own outlook on life bring his opinion to the party.
I have thought a lot about this and I won't detail what I think are specific solutions for AZB but let me say that in general two things are going to happen as we move forward in the information age, one is that we are all going to get tougher mentally, and two we are all going to get more jaded.
Knockers knock, it's the second oldest profession. How was it Bob? She coulda been better Bill.
