We are going non smoking.

Nonsmoking

My opinion (for what it's worth) is that pool halls tend to drive away nonsmokers everyday that they allow smoking. This makes more room for smokers increasing the smoke and driving away more nonsmokers. The end result is that their customer base definitely draws from smokers more than the average business.

The room owner facing nonsmoking legislation does have to try to find a way to accommodate both sectors with patios for smoking or a minimum an awning to huddle beneath in rainy weather. The smarter room owner will start to increase his nonsmoking base prior to the legislation taking effect by having nonsmoking league nights and other promotions like nonsmoking tournaments. This not only gets more nonsmokers into the hall, but begins to train smokers to the idea of smoking outside.

We have been non-smoking since March 09, I would love to know where the non-smokers are at, they don`t seem to be coming to the poolroom yet. I think they go where the people are and thats where people can smoke , its totally weird and backwards. JMO

Were are the non-smokers

Their home after the law was passed and they ruined someones business because all they wanted to do is be politically correct. Most of the non smokers I know never really frequent pool halls and the ones that do or quit at least understand that if they don't like ]it don't play. But they sure like to drink and I have seen many a non-smoker walk out of a pool hall and get in their cars and drive off with me always wondering if they are capable or even legal!!

non smoking

we just re-opened our room,it was non smoking before,we felt this is the way of things to come.i smoke, however i would never change it in our room,Warren Lee

non smoking rooms

we opened a room which never had smoking from day one,we felt the previous owner Bill Malloney(hope spellingis correct)who passed away, praised by every and i really mean every patron, created what we feel is the way of all pool rooms in the future.i smoke and so do many players so outside we put out a couple of nice stools and standing ashtray, for those who want to use it can, yup,i use it too!

Here's one. I quite league a few years ago because my eyes couldn't take the smoke. My contacts would just burn and I couldn't see well enought with glasses.
North Carolinia just went non-smoking, so last week I joined a league. Just to be clear, I don't support state sponsored mandates like North Carolina's. Businesses should be free to do as they please.

It will be fine in time......

I'm hopeful that you will be able to weather the storm! The State of WA passed a smoking ban on all public places back in 2005 -- except for the Tribal Casinos :banghead:

We were pretty much a smoking establishment.....you know the scene with the blue/purple haze hanging around above the pool lights :grin-square:

Anyways, we experienced about a 30% decline in sales. The Bar business has never really recovered. We have tried to focus on increasing our quality of services and promoting food sales (which has helped) plus, simply striving to be the best place in the city/county to play league pool during the week and hosting tournaments on the weekends.

Don't get me wrong, I have mixed emotions about the ban; however, ultimately, it's a good thing for your staff and patrons. If you keep a positive attitude, I'm hopeful that you will be able to attract more players and patrons given some time because your place will be a more "Healthy" & a "MORE FUN" place to play pool.

You have to "GO with the FLOW" to survive!

Best of luck to you folks,

Ken :thumbup2:

Ken,

You optimism is admirable. I just don't think it is realistic. I'm not a psychologist, but there is something that makes someone attracted to pool more likely to be a smoker. When I did surveys in my room trying to convince the city council a smoking ban would put me out of business- consistently 60% of the players were smokers. That is way, way above the national average. I lost 50% of my business. It eventually "came back" to a loss of about 30-35% but the damage was done.

Maybe consider advertising 3 or 4 months in advance that you will be non-smoking a few months before the ban, and have a big celebration event/tournament. Embrace change instead of fighting it. Not going to argue about big gov't on the topic of smoking, just saying if it's going to happen anyway you may as well embrace it from a business standpoint. You can fight it on the legal/political level if you truly believe you're right, but from a business standpoint I would be putting ads out in the paper and local TV embracing the non-smoking atmosphere.

Then why are there no none smoking rooks without the heavy hand of the state forcing it.

LWW <---Nonsmoker.

Home Depot announced that they will help you to quit your smoking addiction by all means ie. drugs counseling etc.
if you still smoke in July 2010 you will have a surcharge put on your health care benefits!!!
I read where they will not let smokers work in some companies because of the lack of productivity of smokers compared to non-smokers!!!
They also want to put in a $1.00 more tax on a pack to help fight the Pennslyvania money problems!
wave of future

Do you know what 3rd hand smoke is ??

The surgeon general declared 3rd hand smoke is deadly to all!

3rd hand smoke is a burning cigarette or cigar in a ashtray nasty item for sure!!
