We need a new movie.

Pool is developing a new and better reputation with each passing day; yet there still hasnt been a decent pool movie that really shows what a pool hall is like, or what an experiance playing on the road can be. Pool Hall Junkies was crap, just a Hollywood idea story with no real playing in it. The Hustler is far and away the best pool movie, yet it doesnt show the diversity of the pool scene. People from every profession play pool; whenever I am looking for a specialist at something, I just ask around my local pool hall and find someone that knows the information I need.
I believe a movie based on the book "Playing Off the Rail" would be good, but there would be some obvious changes. Also showing good pool in a movie wouldnt be that hard or take a thousand takes... get a 100+ speed player to play for a few hours by himself and tape it all, eventually we will end up with uncut film of multiple racks run... what have we seen so far?... the idiot in Junkies ran 3 balls and banked a nine in uncut... yay  ... RIIIIGHT big whoopin deal. I have some good ideas on how to make this movie exciting to everyone, remain true to pool, and not have the CHEESIEST hustles in the world... "I paid 5K for YOUR shot... now its MY shot!". BS BS
So, is there anyone "In the business"? that might want to at least talk about movie ideas? I can write a script... but I need input from you guys, the fabric of the pool halls.

Movie idea...

As corny as it may sound...I have always had this movie idea.

How bout if Fast Eddie had had a child that he never knew about. And to beat all, this child was disabled, in a wheelchair even. Now Eddie never knew of this kid until he comes back around to the kid's mom when the kid is around 18 or 19...and here he discovers the kid rolling around in a wheelchair playing pool...and beating the pants off other able bodied players. Can be a real heart puller...or a real gutsy movie either way. Can be a story where Eddie tries to take him on the road...but realizes that the kid is too much responsibility and too big of a liability for him, so he ditches him in some town...only to find the kid later at a tourney and the kid beats the crap outta him. Now it sounds "Color of Money"-esque...but could be a real triumph of the spirit for the kid...a really show of heart of how good a player can be, disabled or not.

Just my thoughts...take em for what they are worth.

I agree 100%!

I my local rooms America is represented...where are the regular people in these movies?...no women, no people of color, just gangsters and wanna be's...it's unfortunate...I'd like to see a documentary style film of maybe a month in a real room anywhere in America...that would be cool!

Shorty,

This idea is pretty good. I'd only make one change. Instead of a son in a wheelchair, how about an 18 or 19 year old daughter. Blonde, big breasts, great body....you get the idea :D :D :D .

Just kidding of course. Yours is not a bad idea.

Also, Shorty, are you going to attend the big Smokey Mountain Wheelchair event in Waynesville, NC at the end of April?

Mike

I'd like to see a documentary too...with one half of the
film following a roadplayer and another half following a
strong tournament player trying to go pro. Might be tough
for the roadplayer with a cameraman following him around
tho lol

It's true man. Go to the video store and check em both out. I get 50 cents for every rental. Both movies been out for 10 years. So far I have recieved $1,000,000 and counting.
It was nice to meet you too.
Couldn't help myself man. Don / Rip :p

Hey Shorty, is the top of your head flat? :p

Grrrrrrr

Okay Don,

That flat head comment is gonna cost ya! 100 a rack, you giving me 12-3 right playing one hole? (smirk) and I will even wear a ski-mask if you need me to.

And no, I can't make the Smokey Mountain tourney, I am already commited to a tournament at the end of April in northern Mississippi...at the Best Little Pool Room in the South to be exact, Southern Billiards. I also gotta big one hole game that weekend and plan on staying in some light action. I have a hotel room, but not sure why I bothered ;P.

Anyway, my career as a midget porn star is LONG over...it's called a marriage...paralyzed both of us from the waist down it seems.

Shorty

Well as much as I like the Movie Rounders it was a total ripoff of the Hustler..and it seriously helped a Hold Em craze...I think they should make Playing off the rail into a movie...Forget Tony Annagoni plug in a younger gun and a side kick have him match/ woof ect like the book, use Derby City as the culmination or the beginning....Throw in some hot women, violence, characters of the game, reality of the road, good soundtrack, some cash....and make the movie like 3 hours long....

Shorty, I really like you buddy. You know I am just kidding around ;) . I would love to play some 1 pocket with you, however, I don't know about the spot.
Hundred a game, I will make the trip. That way I start out about $1,000 down. I don't want you playing with any performance enhancers or with a cue design thieft cue. Thats the rules pal.
Your friend, Rip :D

I think they should make Playing Off The Rail a movie.
But, change things a bit. Make the writer a retired-cop instead.
Make the player a younger dude who quit playing after he got into some shooting after he hustled one guy.
Retired cop convinces the ex-hustler to play again b/c the retired cop always wanted to go on the road.
They go on the road. One stop was at a prison playing an ex-US Open champ.
The final match; the kid goes against the world champ getting the 7-ball. Then they bet it all playing the world champ even. The kid runs 10 racks in a row.
Pick the background music while the kid runs the 10-pack.
I say play some Robert Miles techno tune.
Last picture you see is the cop and the kid running out of the poolroom with a huge caseful of money.
The ex-cop should be played by Cheech Marin.
The player should be Matt Damon of course.
Johnny Archer plays himself. So, does Rodney Morris.

Kiss,

That is exactly what I was thinking, instead of that old Tony, use a kid in his early 20's who just inherited a pool hall from his fathers passing. And the backer would be someone other than an author... It could possibly be filmed documentry style, yet obviously not a documentry as that would be impossible for a road player and a camera crew. And yes, have the players hit up the Biggest Tournys around the country. Pool needs more hype, its reputation is starting to come out of the garbage with schools in TX starting leagues... but you are right about Rounders, ok movie that started ALOT of hype over Hold'em. I think thats what that show Ballbreakers is trying to promote also.

HA HA, the only performance enhancer I use is that black stuff called coffee...and I take it like I like my women, strong and black. Not sure about the cue design thief part...all I got is a Schon I found side the road in a ditch...took me month's to straighten it...and it still shoots crooked ;).

But seriously, hard to find a better pool room than Southern Billiards. Too great of an atmosphere and too nice of people.

Are there any airports near bye? I sure hope so. Where are me and the ol'lady gonna stay? Your place maybe?
I checked out the site. Looks nice. I would love to come down sometime. I just took a week off. I could probably do a 4 dayer. I'll buy the food and drinks and bring along a copy of my movies for you and your pals. The new movie with Shorty should be a winner. I think he is gonna be a wrenkled star one day :D . I saw you looking at me looking at you looking at me buddy. I know what ya really got on your mind. I might be fat, but I don't do that. Well maybe for $1,000,000. Even let ya broadcast it.

HollyWEIRD makes movies to make money, and entertain. That is their game, making money, plus lately they are in the POLITICAL CORRECTNESS BUSINESS.

Two Great Pool movies, are the Hustler, and the Color of Money. Both are Classic, and the Acting is Superb in both.

What I would like to see is these two Classics above on T.V. more often, as they along with ESPN Billards would renew interest in the game of Pool.
;)

You're gettin cheap in your old age.... or are you hittin the shine again????

what about this one

here is one I have fooled with for a few years but figured out I can not
write a movie :( I had one writer that liked the movie but he then got a job with a network and is nowgone from the ranks of an unknown.

Two main characters ... One is an older man in his 60s. He has recently lost his wife and his spirit is waning. His daughter is making him move from
NYC (any city) to the country. The daughter lives next door to the other main character.
He is a young guy 20 years old. A kid in and out of JUCO that hasn't done anything since graduating. His parents split when he graduated HS.
He runs with the wrong group of friends and is in and out of mild trouble.

The one thing they have in common is that for some reason they like pool.
The older guy was drawn to it as a kid. --- first scene of the movie I would show the older guy as a kid skipping school and running past a pool room. The kids would peer into the room and then start to leave but the guy would stay and look a little longer than the others. Maybe another scene somewhere about getting let into the room by an uncle or anyone.---

The 20 year olds buddies all go to the pool room but its just to knock balls around. The 20 is alot better than they are and is drawn to it but hides it around them. The group also picks on a girl in the room playing my herself.
Ugly duckling turns good looking later in the movie type.

The kid gets into trouble and when the next door neighbors are talking about
the kid and the older guy moving in the young kids mom volunteers him to
help move his stuff in.
Kid is not happy about it but see some pool stuff when moving in. The guy says he used to play and was good but got married and quit. The old guy says he has not played in years but was pretty good. --maybe a loval champion type guy--
Old guy asks why he is interested and the kid replies that there is a room nearby and he goes with friends every now and then. The old guy asks if he is any good or really likes it and the kid makes a smartass remark and goes back to moving stuff in.

Old man goes to the pool room and watches a bit and meeting some regulars.
Maybe the daughter tells the kids mom that the old guy is going to a pool room and she does not like it but at least he is getting out.
Old guy sees the kid there and sees the kid and his friends picking on the
girl. He befriends her and they play from time to time with him showing her stuff.
The old guy notices that the kid comes in without his friends during the day some and plays good but plays bad when around his friends. ALso asks why they pick on the girl and talk crap about pool. Old man realizes that the pool
bug has caught the kid like it did him and he is hiding it.

On night the old man and the girl are playing and the kid with friends are leaving. The older guy walks over and invites him to stay and play and the friends give him crap. The kid then makes a smartass remark about the old guy and the girl and they leave. Kid looks back as he is leaving.

He goes over and apologizes and the two begin talking about pool and the old days and how to play.

The rest of the movie is about the kid getting better and becoming a different
person. In the middle once the locals see how good he has become he goes against the old mans advice and goes out with a couple hustlers. Bar scenes
and pool room hustlin scenes. Trouble happens and the kid come back to the old guy.
He becomes good and falls for the girl. There would be a team event in the
movie like the Mosconi cup but for 21 and under. He makes the team and
goes on to help USA win. Girl is now girlfriend and is better looking.
Both the mother of the kid and the daughter of the old man have come full circle with mention of one or both getting a table at home and haveing people over to play. The old guy gets rejuventated after losing his wife
of 30+ years.
A feel good story type movie. The flare would come in the stories the old guy would tell, the middle part where the kid decides to go with the hustlers,
and the girl would be the love interest and looker in the movie.
The movie has the main plot but several side plots that all get tied up at the end. The kids father who has left the family return and watches the kid proudly in the final event. Maybe even after being an ass to the mother in the middle of the movie for letting him play pool. --the kid would have something bad happen to him when he was with the hustler guys--the father
would blame the mother yet she would defend her decision to let him keep
playing pool because its not as it seems--pool is not the problem type thing.
Father comes full circle.
Maybe the Mosconi Type event at the end is for the first college pool scholarships ever.

I dont know but I like the premise. IMO most people I have known have been drawn to pool for an unknown reason. It can pick out one person out of a group and that person gets the bug. Everyone can relate to people
thinking pool is bad. The movie would be a positive image for pool. I know alot about what I would want in the movie and scenes but I can not write it.
It needs to be written well with some great one-liners and jokes.
Good writers are talented people.

Hey Frank

Not bad buddy. For somebody who can't write you sure write well. I like your story. How about I be the old man and Shorty plays the kid. We could work Buck into the plot. The ugly girl is the tough part. I have never seen one. I recon we could put some make up on $Bill, throw in some panty hose and a skirt. Bill could play the before and after parts. Save on the production cost. What ya think man. I'm in!!!!!!! I think. Let ask Shorty and $Bill.
Rip :D
