We need a new movie.

Someone forgot to tell Quentin Tarantino that. He seems to get OK crowds, most rated R movies are crap, that is why they dont get an audiance. At the same time it takes a heck of a bad film to be rated R and I dont think a pool movie needs to be that extreme or graphic. Sex scenes dont need to be in your face porn, viloence does not need to be like Casino where Pesci gets beat virtually to death by baseball bats and then burried alive. For certain movies scenes like that work and are needed to show the true nature of the topic, that is not the pool scene.

QT has made money but take a look at the box office numbers for all-time and
then compare the different eras. At one time R movies did pretty well
because we all snuck into the theaters or we knew the ticket person or
they just did not care. Today its a little different and more and more
movies are being made specifically not to be rated R so that they can
get the $$$.
I agree that alot of Rated R movies are crap but theres tons or crappy
non-rated R movies as well.
QT started with more of a cult following and quite a few of his movies
did not set the box office on fire but ended up being very successful overall.
I am not a huge fan but liked a few of his movies.
I think theres more allowed in PG movies now than there used to be and also
just looking at numbers is not a great way to judge. Ticket prices were
way way lower at the box office years ago. Take JAWS ..it made 260 million
in the US. In todays world if the same amount of people made to see the movie the number would be staggering.
I agree also that the pool scene does not need to show anything that would
warrant a R rating to be successful

I'd like to see a movie about pool as good as "Rounders" was for poker. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have a small movie production company and take on projects by aspiring screenwriters and film makers. Here's a website for a screenwriters contest: http://projectgreenlight.liveplanet.com/index.jsp?nav=home

Interestingly, pool seems to be more mainstream on American TV than before. How about that Hanes underwear commercial with Michael Jordan playing pool! :p

Last evening, we watched that new show "The Contenders," a documentary about aspiring boxers, kind of an "American Idol" of boxing. If somebody could do something like this for pool, I believe it would be a hit.

I may bring a video camera with me and create a documentary of my own at a major tournament, maybe the U.S. Open. I'm no professional by any means, but I believe if done tastefully, something like this would be educational and entertaining and would be a great way to showcase pool, especially at the Open, a tournament consisting of world champions, professionals, independents, aspiring players, young guns, and roadsters.

I was think the same thing. Have a group of 16 players, every week, someone challeneges another player and the loser gets eliminated. I think it would be great. I like the UFC show that is on Monday night. You either back up the talk, or you're gone. Winner gets paid entry into the next 10 UPA events, or a sponsorship deal with a major company - or both.

I know it would probably never happen, but I would like to see the life of St.Louie Louie Roberts made into a movie, touching not so much on the end of his life, but the way that he lived and played.

Louie, would be the most logical choice, Lunch. He played super pool and had the looks ALL the girls liked.

Who would play him? Edward Norton comes to mind.

Does anyone know where to get copies of screenplays/ scripts so that we can know what they are supposed to look like. For instance, do they have instructions on camera angles/ shots or are they just dialogue?

That would be a great concept, Blackjack. I think the Celebrity Pool tried to create this by combining comedy with challenge matches for charity. Pool scientists thought it was poor, and I'm not so sure what the non-pool public made of it. This may have been a pilot for future shows, but I haven't seen anything new forthcoming to date.

Regarding Louie Roberts, I never met the man, but from the mouths of those who knew him and saw him play, his memory lives on. I have heard so many variations of his early passing. Not only would a documentary about St. Louis Louie Roberts be an excellent choice, but I believe an A&E feature story about the man would be an intriguing topic.

My pipe dream would be to do a documentary of the U.S. Open, kind of a behind-the-scenes look at a major pool tournament in these times, what it takes to produce an international professional venue for a 200-plus-player field. I'd lace it with little snippets of conversations between competitors before and after matches, and, of course, include as much of the after-hours activities as possible, when the action can be fast and furious.

What's funny is when ESPN is recording a pool happening, they got a camera guy right in the pit with the players. When the player is aiming for the hole, this camera guy is 3 inches from the designated pocket, right in the player's line of vision. Yet, I've seen many a player get unnerved and downright testy in non-recorded venues for things like somebody's Twinkie wrapper making noise in the gallery. I guess you'd call it "selective focus." :p

I'd be interested to know if anybody has heard anything about the guys who were at the recent Derby City Classic in Louisville last January. They were recording various players and activities of this week-long event.

Rumor has it............

Hollywood Rumor has it that Robert Redford & Paul Newman are getting together for one last movie again.
Lets hope it is a good remake of The Hustler or maybe The Sting (my favorite of all time).
