Get a postal or lab scale. They weigh to accuracies of about 0.1 ounces or 1 gram. Figure $20 to get to 1-gram accuracy or $60 for 1/2-gram/0.05-ounce accuracy. On ebay, search for "ibalance" for examples.

An alternative is a balance scale with brass weights and such or a "balance beam" scale. See www.ohaus.com for examples.

As far as calibration, you can either buy a 500 gram brass weight somewhere or just trust the scale.

The weight of balls is not well specified (5.5 to 6 ounces) but each ball in a set should be within a few grams of the average, including the cue ball.

I have a Ohaus triple beam scale. It is accurate to 20th (you can use half measures) of a gram. I use it for cues, parts, mixing epoxy and also finish. If you get a postal scale set it for grams, it is a little more accurate but you have to remember to use the conversion of 28.35 when converting to ounces. If you don't you will be off by 1/4 ounce on a 20 ounce cue.

I have a postal one...cost about 40 bucks at the post office. The one we have goes up to 10lbs, but they have 5lb ones for less than that.

How many cues are you weighting? I just take a cue to the market and put it on the scale.

Check out the myweight.com scales. I have a pocket sized portable that goes to the third fraction. Comes with calibration weights. They also have plug in table top models.

I use a My Wegh 6001 digital. I think about 30 bucks. Self calibrates, lbs or grams and is small and has ribs that will hold the cue and shaft without movement. CB, what kind/make? 160-165 grams usually depending on brand and set, some to 168 grams.

This one is pretty accurate for a not too big price. $80. Also it has a "tare" feature. You can stick a bowl on the scale to hold a ball, press on/tare, then it zeros out. Then stick ball in bowl to get weight. Same thing with cues, stick something on scale to keep cues from rolling off, then press tare and it zeros out. Takes AC or batteries.

Aramith balls weigh 165-166 grams for standard ones, 168-169 grams for super-pro/tv/measles. This counts for new or fairly new balls only, after a year or two a standard cue-ball will weigh less than 160.

I went to Office Depot and bought a 5 lb. postal scale. Works well enough for the money (10 bucks).

I get it, no just for cues, finish and epoxy. I did got arrested once and spent 4 hours in a lock up probably because of one of those scales in the triangle case they come in. I got stopped for driving around suspiciously about 4 in the morning, not to mention I was probably being profiled, (This was before they had a name for it). When they stopped me I had a scale sitting on the seat next to me.

At one time they were considered drug paraphernalia. and you couldn't even buy one except in a medical supply with I.D. and so on. The cop was arrogant when he began speaking to me I guess I was a bit uncooperative. He began asking about scale, I didn't bother explaining and basically said "It is a scale, so what" Once he had me out of the car and frisked me he found a lot of money in my pockets and called for a back up, I guess he thought he had something here.

One of the first things he asked me was, was I ever arrested. I said "no" and he says, "I find you are lying to me boy your not going to like it". That was the end of any cooperation from me to this a-hole. When other cops arrived I did finally begin to explain myself and my actions but long story short, at that point they would not have believed anything I would have said anyway and I manage to get myself arrested for a few hours till they checked me out.

This was before computers were common and things took a little longer and were harder to check. I should add my money came up $200 short when I counted it later. It was an experience though, I had never been arrested before, cuffed and actually hauled off so I guess I found it interesting, plus I hadn't done anything wrong.

!) Google "Pelouze Scales"....

I purchased a Pelouze P20DL from Office Depot (on sale $99.99).
It's pretty fancy- with lots of features. I use it mostly for weighing packages sold on eBay or through my business. It automatically calculates postage to your destination's zip (and internationally), and you can update the postal rates if they change. Rates include USPS , UPS, FedEx , Airborne / DHL. It's probably way more scale than most will ever need, but it sure saves me (and my customers) a bunch of $$$ on shipping charges.

Less expensive Pelouze scales can be found for under $15 (mechanical). Their least-expensive electronic scale is ~$30. They have other electronic and manual postal scales in a wide range of prices and weight-capacities.

2) Calibration: Depends on whether it's mechanical or digital. Most digital scales have a TARE feature that self-zeros. This is really handy for odd-shaped items that need to be held on the scale

3) Cue Ball Weight- My Super Aramith Pro-Cup ball (almost new) is 168g or 5.958 Oz
