Wenge or Rosewood?

Hi guys

I'm about to buy a Mezz EC7 cue and need to make a choice between wenge or rosewood?

I understand that wenge is harvested from The Congo, Africa and rosewood from a variety of places, but I guess my question is...

Do they play any different?

My current cue is a Schmelke cocobolo Sneaky Pete.

Thanks for any opinions/advice

Hi,

True rosewoods are fat and dense woods. The cue will have a full hit and will feel like playing with steel. It will hit like a ton.
Wengé is a very dry and stiff wood. The cue will have a stiff and crispy hit.

The advantage of rosewood is that you can use the natural weight of the wood so you won't need a weight screw. The cue will have a natural balance.
Wengé is quite light and the cue will need a screw which might influence the balance.

So there are some important differences between woods and so do the cues.

Good luck.

Greetz,

Tom

Thank you for your wonderful insight Tom :)

It seems I haven't had nowhere near enough experience with various cues!
My current cue has the butt in cocobolo merging into a maple forearm.
I guess this 'merging' would also lend to a different, maybe lighter/crisper hit?

It appears that Mezz EC7 has a solid butt & forearm in the chosen exotic wood.
If that's the case, I'd probably choose wenge , as I tend to over hit.

mmm what to choose?

rosewood is a classic wood used in cues for ever
wenge is a "niche" wood
my 2 cents and im not a cuemaker would be this
dont buy a cue to help your flaws
practice/take lessons/ get better
and pick a wood that was used in the cues of the champions
how many gus or balabushka etc cues were made with wenge???
just sayin

Thanks BBB
I did wonder about wenge as a viable material.
My generic search on google came up with many pics and info on high quality walking canes
and not much on cues? :)
Rosewood is by far, more common wood in cues.

i think kevin still has it

note to self: order more wenge

WOW! Beautiful cue

The problem is, I can't find any close up pictures of the Mezz EC7 cues?
I clearly prefer the dark exotic woods, such as cocobolo, wenge, ironwood and rose wood.

Oh and BTW BHQ, I love the white butt cap and joint contrast on that cue :)

Rosewood for me is the choice.I can't remember one cue with a rosewood
forearm that didn't play nice and had a wonderful solid feel.Always loved Ebony,Cocobolo, and Rosewood for a great tone when used as forearms.

There is a third option Ironwood.
It's basically from the Mezz range and nowhere else.
I cannot find an opinion on this wood anywhere on the web!?!

i love wenge except for the splinters & the finishing pains:eek: ,
but i finally figured out how to handle that

Yup I've still got that beauty Brent, but the price was wrong, everybody knows I don't buy cues except in the 2K-10K range.

You got a little career going for yourself, just like I predicted all those years ago. Now you supply guys like Tikkler.

Congrats.

My assumption is all of these cues have a laminate core and a maple handle. If that's the case, choose on cosmetics. You can e-mail Mezz and ask.

The one I really like is the curly maple stained dark. The rosewood doesn't look like true rosewood to me. Ironwood and wenge are a matter of personal taste.

If you buy wenge, learn that it's pronounced "when-gay" - and to phrase it in such a way that it doesn't sound like a pick up line!

Hey Tom,

With you being a cuemaker - your knowledge is greatly appreciatied here. I have been thinking of getting a Rosewood forearm/handle as well. But do you think the difference will be subtle? As the cueball is about 6 oz's. Or will it be quite a noticeable difference? thxs for the help...

Thanks TATE for the humorous heads up :D
I blatantly pronounce it as 'oraNGE'.

I've decided to go for the MEZZ EC7 - J Iron Wood pure based on looks. The darker the better!

The problem has been that it's very difficult to find a decent quality picture of the Mezz cues.
I have to say that the Mezz website (and not only theirs) don't appear to have very clear images of their cues (for me personally).

But the really helpful guys (Thomas) at http://www.cuesports.de (Germany) Took some real clear photos and mailed them to me. Very helpful

I should have named the thread Wenge, Rosewood or Ironwood

Once the cue arrives, I'll find a Mezz thread and post up a picture, so other people who maybe can't get to a shop and try first hand, can get a better idea of what the cue is like.

Mezz EC7-W6. Wenge wood. Cue plays great and looks exactly the same as the picture.
