Good morning, Gentlemen!

I am looking for some West System epoxy (with slow hardener). I can order it new from anywhere, but thought if someone had some they didn't want, or they changed to a different epoxy, I could take it off their hands.

Alternately, who has the best price on it new, assuming I end up going that route?

Getting to the bottom of the barrel, and need some reasonably soon. I don't go through a ton of it, so I don't buy it very often...

I got my last batch from West Marine. I have to assume it is cheaper on-line, and less expensive still if I take a partial off someone's hands who doesn't need it any longer...

I'm watching every penny these days!:)

Probably would not be worth the shipping. You should be able to get it locally from any marine or boat supply. Amortized into use, it is pretty cheap per job, only pennies. Also, you may want to split an order with someone since you don't use much.

I switched from West System to these guys years ago & never looked back. I use the 300/21 & love it. It's similar to my old West stuff in viscosity and curing time but it's very clear & by all acounts seems to be noticeably stronger. I poured some into a plastic tub & let it cure, then attempted to bust it with a hammer. I couldn't even dent it, only scratch it. Seriously, it took me several minutes of pounding with a claw hammer to crack the stuff. Best thing is they are almost half the price.

The 300/11 is the actual bonding adhesive & I have heard it's the cat's meow, plus incredibly affordable. I'd use it but it's too thick for my "A" joint. I need the thin stuff.

What are you using it for? I checked out the website and gave them a call. It seems you have to order it directly from them. I am kind of a sucker for anything new, at least to me so I may order a kit today out of curiosity. Can you elaborate of the product? Have you done any sealing with it?

i have
it's water clear
i thin it out some with heat
works great
 
I use it mostly for my "A" joint. I have used it as a sealer & it works great, would likely be an awesome finish if you had the patience to do it. But i mainly use it in my "A" joint. I have heard the 300/11 bonding mix makes for incredible "A" joint adhesive, too.

I may try the 300/11 kit and see how that does. Maybe some side-by side testing: glue up purple heart end-grain to end-grain with both systems and see which does better. The pricing on the 300/11 is certainly good! An entire kit with metering pumps is less than resin alone from West...

I am always leery to make a change like that. I used the Petit PolyPoxy for a long time, mainly for fretless bass fingerboard coatings, but some structural stuff too. Then we couldn't get it (they stopped making it) and we switched to West; the problem was the bubbles in the west, and it didn't sound quite the same as the Petit.

I will check the local guys for West as well as the usual suspects on-line. I wish the West pumps metered a smaller volume... I typically mix up batches that are just a few grams each.
 
The 300/21 is the most like the west with slow setting hardener. The 300/11 is much thicker.

It is easy to mix small amounts, or big ones for that matter, by weight. I have two small pump bottles I got at the dollar store. They use them for hand lotion and such. I put the amount of resin on the scale I want. Then calculate how much hardener I need and set the scale to that amount. Then I just add the hardener till the scale reaches zero. For very small amounts I will dip a toothpick in the hardener and drip tiny drops till it is at zero. I am using a Triple beam scale by the way.

As to the epoxy, I have been using West for years now. I have a comfort level with it. I know others have had good luck with this other epoxy, but I feel I should stick with what I know. I am not doing a lot of cues at all, and don't need gallons of epoxy, or to change the system that is working for me. I am happy with the cues I am making.

So, I think I wil stick with the West System (no pun intended!:wink:) as it has never let me down.
