I always enjoyed watching Artie and Jim playing 3C in W.W.W., but I always wondered where the pockets went ?
That show and Star Trek kept me in the house for about 3 years on Sat. afternoon re-runs.
 
Glad the movie was the one that you remembered.
Movies, music, and books are snapshots in time.

Like you, I've spent a lot of time tracking down some of those snapshots, and know the good feeling when I can cross another one off the list.

The movie "The Lady is my Wife" is about a former colonel from the Civil War. He is a bitter man, jealous of all the men who pay attention to his gorgeous wife. His wife happens to be a loyal wife but he pushes the envelope every chance he gets, challenging admirers of his wife to a duel and always winning. The colonel doesn't mind killing and is an excellent card player who scrapes a living after the Civil War through gambling at cards.

The pair drift from town to town, milking all of the suckers. He plays cards, she tells fortunes. They run out of money and the stage coach driver puts them off in a desolate town due to the fact that they can't pay him for a farther ride, where one man lives who happens to be a wealthy rancher who owns most everything and has the Midas touch. It doesn't take long for the wealthy rancher who is used to getting what he wants, makes a move on the colonel's wife. The wealthy rancher invites them to come to his ranch where he has a mansion so large that he can ride horses around his pool table. But before that happens, the rancher offers the colonel's wife $1,000.00 for her to sing a song but she refuses and her husband tells his wife privately that it was a stupid move. The two men get to playing pool from horseback and the colonel suggests the wager of his wife against the wealthy rancher's most prized Arabian Stallion, the cornerstone of his wealth. The rancher agrees and the game is on. 8 Ball, a race to 1. The Colonel is an accomplished player hardly ever missing a shot but leaves the wealthy rancher a difficult shot and the rancher makes the 8 ball in the side pocket as I remembered. The wealthy rancher is ready to collect his bet but the Colonel says he was just joking. The rancher offered the colonel $200,000.00 to leave his wife for him to marry. The colonel will have none of that and the Colonel eventually challenges the rancher to a duel but the rancher declines, even though he is EXTREMELY good with a gun, telling the colonel that his wife loves him (the colonel) and only him. Finally the colonel relents and doesn't try to kill the rancher. The couple attempts to leave town but is broke once again as they most always are, living from town to town and sucker to sucker.

Kind of reminds me of how difficult it is for a pool player to make a living.

Cool synopsis. I would say that Hollywood had the stereotype down nicely. It reminds me of a lot of the threads on here, except for parting peaceably.

So losing a bet and then refusing to pay by saying "I was only joking" was popular even back then?

I thought that was a more modern occurence.

Wow, you're old Joey. !960's, B&W TV. I was an alter boy also for a very short time. I got drunk on the wine, but I thought I did everything right in the Mass. But the priest fired me anyhow...go figure. Johnnyt
