Yesterday afternoon I was playing against our club "pro" Marko Lohtander... he finished L64 this year WPC in Taiwan. We warmed up with a couple of racks of 9-ball and decided to play straight pool race to 100. What a match it was!!! I try to describe how it went:

I lost the lag and had to break
score "sheet":

Mikko Lohtander
score break score break
0 0 (broke, and didn't leave any ball on.)
-1 -1 (L. missed the pack completely)
-1 -1 (I made intentional foul and froze him to head rail)
-1 0 (L. thinned the rack and left nothing)
-1 0 (I thinned the rack and left nothing)
-1 0 (L. thinner the rack and left nothing)
84 85 (I made a 4 ball combination-billiard from the rack and run 85 and was stuck in a cluster of balls after the 85th ball, auch  )
100 101 (Lohtander run 101-out !!! )

I have to say that this was the highest class match I've ever been involved to... Funny, after I run 85 and let Marko back to table, he jokingly said that he would run out from there ! And then he did !! :D

My previous high run was 82...

Great game and allow me to say well-played to both of you. Congratulations on breaking your high run. You guys are definitely ready for prime time!

Most amazing straight pool match I've watched was Geroge "Ginky" San Souci vs Tony Robles. Several years ago, in a race to 200, Ginky broke and Tony Robles ran 200 and out. Utterly brilliant.

Straight pool is a beatiful game to watch when it's played well. Wish I'd been there to watch you and Lohtander!

Thanks, sjm !
There were few people watching from the beginning and they were really happy to see such a high-quality match. First they were sweating because I seemed to be in stroke and then they were sweating if Lohtander was able to run out. The difference was that I played text-book straight pool and didn't shoot any difficult shots, but Lohtander had to bank at least one ball and a few times had very difficult positions, but always came up with some super shot to keep the run going... Amazing ! Somehow I knew Marko had the energy to run out, but didn't believe it because the match would end up being a classic... which it did eventually :D

Great game. Mikko, you clearly have the ability to run 100 or more. Near the end of the run, did you start to think about your current record and how you are going to break it? Or were you simply in the "zone" and accidentally ran out of position?

Happy shooting.

Actually, this was the first time I felt comfortable through the whole run and never got nervous. Seriously, I thought I was capable of running 100 or 150 or even more there. But, I got out of line on the keyball and left myself almost straight in on the break ball. I realized now that I should've shot the break shot with follow instead of draw. I think I was quite unlucky to leave myself stuck on the rack, the draw somehow disappeared, but I admit that could've played the shot a little bit better.

But the run didn't end in a really bad and easy missed shot as it usually does...

Thanks for your comments...

Hey, are you guys referring to Accu-Stats tapes of straight pool matches?? Or are there some other instructional 14.1 tapes out there of which I am not aware??

Dear like-minded straight pool fanatic ! :)

I'm referring to Accu-Stat tapes of players who really know how to play straight pool. I mean, for instance, Efren Reyes is a great player, but his pattern play is so extraordinary, that I wouldn't recommend that to anyone. Watching Ervolino, Mizerak, Varner, Sigel etc. with active thoughts on each shot has helped me to understand the ways to play many patterns with high success percentage.
Also, the high class expertise comments from Danny DiLiberto etc. have pointed out many things to be considered during a straight pool match.

There are some Straight pool videos out there. Some of the ones I have in my collection are as follows:

Jim Rempe
-How to run a rack
_How to run 100 balls

Dallas West
-Dallas West runs 100

Grady Mathews
-Straight Pool, Break shots and key balls

Mike Sigel
perfect pool ( 8,9, and straight)
run out series ( 8,9, and straight)

George Fels
-Straight Pool

Willlie Mosconi
-Take a Lesson from Willie Mosconi

Pat Fleming
_The Creative Edge (has some straight pool)

Each video contains some good info. Also watching Straight pool matches with Grady Mathews and Bill Incardonio commentating is good instruction. RJ

Good advice, RJ. Rempe's "how to run 100" is absolutely brilliant. Rempe gives geat insights into how a top player plans the table, identifying opportunities for cluster breakouts and pitfalls that have to be accounted for ialong the way, in building a runout pattern. It's a lot more than "play the five ball on to the three ball" or "use the two as your key ball and the six as your break shot". This video will give you a sense of the kind of thinking and planning that separates the best from the rest.
