How many times in a 8ball game have you heard this? My colorful reply is, "Your an a$$hole but that's not important...your stripes...shoot!"

Maybe we should make not knowing which group you are an offense that carries loss of game as its penalty.

That is; if you can't be bothered enough to watch the game being played, you should not be playing the game.

Yeah, I think there should be several "sudden loss" penalties...like missing a shot with ball in hand, or missing a short straight-in set-winner, etc. Like the big hook coming off the side of the stage on an amateur talent show...buzzzzz...you lose!
:p

i did watch a game at league some years back where one of my team mates shot at the wrong ball and the opponent didn't notice and they finished the game each finishing the game shooting the wrong balls. after the game someone pointed out the mistake to them and they had to replay the game.

Remember the "Gong Show"?

As we age, we sometimes suffer short term memory loss.

Also, I sometimes have trouble remembering things short term.

Me too, and I'm only 45.

It's a common thing and I think no big deal. If somebody wants to be a smart ass about it then they are a smart ass, I don't think it says anything about the person who asked.

Frankly, I have a lot of really extremely important things in my memory, but there is a lot of crap in it too, so things like what balls I am on tend to get brushed to the side too easily sometimes. :o

I actually have an extremely good memory. I remember the telephone number of the house I lived in until I was five. I remember almost all the bolt sizes on my first Harley (a lot of Harleys), as well as Honds CB750, Yamaha XS650, Honda, CB500T, Triumph 750 Tiger TR7RV, my 69 Chevelle, my Porche 914, my VW bug, my Shelby, and more.....and most of those I have not owned in decades. And that does not even begin to consider close to a thousand drugs, their chemical mechanism, indication, contraindication, side effects, and interactions. Then of course there is all of human biochemistry, physiology, immunology, pathophysiology, pathology, microbiology....and on and on.....

But yes, I forget what balls I am shooting. Not that it isn't important to me....just one of those things. I'm also not used to shooting the way that I do now. It didn't used to take so many turns at the table.

Also, lastly...if one gets pissy because the other person asks what they are shooting I think it has more to do with the fact that by nature of the fact that the person asked we all know that you just got remined that YOU JUST MISSED YOUR SHOT!

I used to ask such things just to rattle the other player.

Now of course it's because I need to know. :o

Several years ago there was a rule in place that you could actually switch suits in 8 ball if you pocketed 2 of the wrong suit in consecutive shots before a foul is called.

I told myself I wanted to try this just to see if my opponent would ever notice! Just as a joke and would give the game away but just to see if I could pull it off! Never found myself in a position to try it though..

A few years ago, they have since taken out that rule.
