What are the things you like or dislike about a pool tournament

I was talking to some friends recently and we started discussing what we didn't like about tournaments.
You know the added money not being enough, the distance, the tables.
So I started to think what other people might like or dislike so I propose this question to you:
What are the things you like or dislike about a pool tournament?
I personally don't like sharking. I have found if somebody is sharking you they do not like to have it done back to them. So it works in reverse.
What about you?

As a player, I don't like it when;

TD accept any excuse to let someone sign up LATE

TD keeps calling the same players to the same table over and over.

TD doesn't post the money breakdown (# of entries x entry fee = $XXXX + added)

TD doesn't post the money breakdown from 1st to the last place payouts.

TD pays less than 25% of the field.

TD forfiets a player for not being at his match within 15 minutes, yets let other slide.

TD shows blatent favortism towards the players and doesn't really care if anyone knows it.

TD says it is 'his way or the highway'

TD doesn't know the rules and is easily intimidated by a player.

I also don't like it when my opponent comes to the table drops off their stuff and then takes leaves for a 5 minute break.

or when a player talks to the non-shooting player on the next table while you are shooting.

or when you tell them they fouled and they say "don't take it so serious" this is just a game. I politely reply 'if you are not serious, then it shouldn't matter to you either way'

or when the player jumps out of their chair and walks in front of you blocking your path to sit down.

or when a player takes too long to think about the shot he is about to miss.

Spectators making comments about the players loud enough for the matches on 4 tables to hear.

don't get me started.

Biggest dislike ever for me is.....

A poolroom where the tourny is being played has 2 different types of tables and 3 different types of cueballs. You go from a Brunswick to a Diamond at anytime... and using an arimith cueball to a red circle to a measle ball match after match after match. Thats the worst.

Now I am not familiar with large tournament such as DCC, US Open, Swanee, etc. But I have frequented monthly tournaments and larger one time tournaments in the my area which consist of at least a two hour drive, one way.

Dislikes,

1) I have noticed is that it seems like 90% of them will say players meeting at 10 am and wouldnt start the first match until at least 11:30 and that is just annoying as all get out. Its not because of an auction going on, its mostly because of the draw taking so long and players coming in at the last minute to pay entry fees, or the TD calling everyone he knows to come and play.

Now I have to give props to the Golden Fleece in Kenmore, the TD/owner does not allow late entrys into his bigger tournaments and is started on time which is really nice and makes me want to go there more often.

2) Tournament flyers show an added amount on the flyer, but I wish they would actually show the payout on the flyer also based on a full field. The reason I am saying that is, if I am going to a two or more day tournament, I hate getting there and seeing they are paying like %35 of the field. That causes the payouts to be low and I would have to finish in top 4 just to recoupe my expenses which is not likely. I do not want to make my entry fee back if I finish in the last paying position, that just doesnt seem like an achievement to me. I would rather see the players that beat me get more money because they apparenty are more prepared than I was. It is a competition for money, to either loose or win money, not to break even.

3) Tournaments that give top woman money. I think women are great for the game of pool and there are some really great women players, but in my opion I think that should be worded to say, Top B player receives $100 if the tournament is looking to give some incentives for the B and below players. I just dont think gender should play a role in how the prize fund is distributed.

4) Now this is something that I just learned and have not really confirmed yet. Seeding, I have always wanted to go to the US Open and just donate and have a chance to play against the "pro's". Now I hear that they get seeded and the likelyhood of playing one is pretty slim. Just dont understand how seeding is fair for an "open" tournament and that is why if it is true I will not enter. I can understand seeding if it was a tour finally that accumulates points throughtout, but not for a once a year event.

Likes,

1) A cutoff date for payment into a tournament, usually like 7pm the night before the tournament.

2) The tournament brackets if not done by a computer, done the night before the tournament starts.

3) A tournament that uses a computer based program to run the tournament becasue after the action, they can just press start and it does the draw and brackets automatically (less time to start, and most programs will tell you what time the next match will start).

4) A TD that is straight and to the point, no beating around the bush, treats everyone the same regardless of ability.

5) A designated Referee, dont like having to ask one of your competitors to make the call.

6) The etiquette shown by three cushion players and snooker players,,,now that would be something I would really enjoy in a pool tournament. Not saying you have to get all dressed up for a pool tournament, but pool manners/etiquette should be explained by the TD during the players meeting and strictly enforced by the TD.

Thats long enough for now, I am sure there is lots more out there.

What are the things you like or dislike about a pool tournament?

1.) The calcuttas. I ain't buyin' nobody and nobody's buyin' me, so it's a huge waste of my time.

2.) Just as in leagues, tournaments always seem to attract the "player" that thinks he is Gods gift to pool. You know, the overly brash, cocky type that doesn't realize that there are literally thousands upon thousands of players worldwide that play as good or better than he does.

3.) Goin' 2 and out :o!!!

Maniac

My main dislike like others is waiting on your opponent to start your match because they can't be found or have to go outside for a smoke break. That's got to be the most voted on dislike.

I also dislike the pool turkey that shows up, still plays by bar rules, and spends most of the time talking instead of playing.

I dislike a pool hall/bar that can't take care of their tables and/or squeezes them in too close together.

I like competition and respectful opponents.

Neil, you said everything I was going to say. Thanks.

1. Not starting on time.

3. Sitting while waiting for my match.
4. Insane handicaps.
5. T.D. that don't even know the rules and make them up as they go along.

3. Get to see how others handle the situations that come up.
4. The "seriousness", or actual "feel" of pool that's in the air.

You said a mouthful. I like everything you said. Man you could write a book about this subject. Thanks. Keep up the good work Neil.

My, Dislikes, Player putting his/her smokes on the table.

Player name called and he takes forever to show, and I am waiting on him.

Player has to stop before his shot to smoke, and then take 5 minutes to shoot.
TD wants you to give a player to much weight!

Player stands over the table when it is your shot and TD says nothing about it!

Long time between matches.

Don thanks for this thread.

Slow players!!!

We have 2 players locally that slow the weekly tournaments down so much it takes 4 hours to play a race to 4, 9 ball tournament with 10 players. I wish they would have a little consideration for the people that have to get up at 7am in the morning.
You ever notice the guy that looks at a tough shot for 2 minutes usually misses it......

Likes:

knocking the slow players out of tournament
winning tournament!

I hate....

plugging quarters or tokens for the tables.

I LIKE the atmosphere you play in and that if you play well, you could be the best person in the room on that day. And thats a real good feeling.:woot:

I just started regularly playing a local tournament and so far there are 4 dislikes I have.

1. Sharking - This hasn't happened too much, but I had a guy the other night that was saying excuse me before I even got up from my shot when I missed. He was running to the table on every miss I had even blocking my path from walking back to my seat.

2. Dishonesty - there is nothing worse IMO. The same guy as mentioned above was shooting on the 7 ball and knocked the 9 with his bare arm. He looked at it so I know he knew he did it. Well there was an all ball foul rule and he kept shooting like nothing happened. I heard the next night he did some similar things to some others in the same tournament.

3. Lag time between matches. I know its unavoidable at times, and just something I need to get use to, but I don't care for it nonetheless.

4. Playing on a table right where the bar and front door meet where everyone walks in and bumps into you and walks by the table running their hands on it, etc. I hate that table and I am on it way too often in the first round!

As far as likes there are many. I had played mostly league for quite a few years and I enjoy tournaments a lot more so far. They make me try harder because the competition is better and there is a cash reward instead of just patches and plaques.

I also don't have to worry about the whole team aspect, whether it is being short players or another team being drunk and rowdy.

I also think tournament players have a better understanding of pool etiquette. Not 100% of them of course, but they are better as a whole compared to leaguers.

I think the local tournament where I play is ran really good. I believe the payout is 100% and I know for the bigger weekend tournaments money is added at times. The TD has been around a while, knows most of the players in the area, and has the handicaps pretty accurate IMO.

Thanks everyone for your comments I'll be writing an article about this so tournament directors and locations that hold tournaments may get a better idea what the players like and dislike and maybe, just maybe someone will listen.

You can read about this question in the March issue of The Break. Pick up a copy in the Western United States at the better pool halls or read it online at www.thebreakmagazine.com just click on the magazine.

Dislikes

- TD allowing a late arrival player to buy into a BYE slot after the tourney has started.

- Except in a seeded bracket, TD using a non-random method to fill the bracket.

- TD not keeping the tables filled and matches moving along.

- TD not posting payouts in advance.

- TD using ambiguous or difficult to enforce, subjective rules. Common to bar tournaments: "no safeties, make an honest attempt to hit your ball and make a shot". See also: no BIH rules.

- Inexperienced TD not understanding how to run a double elimination bracket.
