What are you best banking/kicking systems?

Would anyone out there like to lend some advice?
This is a part of my game that needs the most improvement.
Using the lights and confusing math is not something that would be helpful to me.

Can anyone dumb-it-down and help a non-banker/kicker out?

I am getting a lot from the Beard. If Freddy cares to know, he is really pissing off alot of people by giving me knowledge he has. :)

Do you know about the "spot on the wall" system? Do you know how to use the diamonds to get to a certain point (dividing the number of diamonds by two)?

So lets say you want to kick and your cueball is in the corner pocket and the ball you want to hit is on the second diamond past the side pocket, both are against the rail: count how many diamonds the cueball and object ball are from each other (there should be 6 diamond separation); divide that by two to get where you would hit the opposite rail to make the hit; level cue, center ball, I like to hit it a little above center medium speed.

This creates "tracks" of where the cueball will travel (the line that takes you to the first rail and the line that takes you to the object ball off the rail. If a ball is sitting anywhere on that line (track), you would hit it. If it is off the line slightly, simply adjust your aim point half the distance the object ball is away from the line.

With this said, when banking you are always going to a pocket. You can figure the right diamond to diamond connection I just described above to bank the ball to a particular pocket, and from the angle into the rail (similar to the cueball position) view a point on the wall, chair, table or whatever is out there about a table length away, and make a note of it. For many of the banks to that same pocket you can simply aim the object ball to that spot on the wall each time without recalculating.

I hope this makes sense, but there are many systems for banking, but these two seem to bee the easiest for me. You need to be able to divide by two and remember the spot you select. Good luck.

This is a great description of the one taught to me:
http://www.poolstudent.com/2010/01/22/system-sid-1-by-scott-rohleder/

As someone who's more of a Sang Lee type at heart that would rather feel his way through every shot, switching to a system was hard :( I'm a believer now though

The advantage to a system is that you can quantify how much to adjust for any particular table, it's rails and the general conditions that day (temperature and humidity). Plus when the pressure's on it's difficult enough to concentrate on your stroke and line without having to tap into the force at the same time.

Honestly, for the longest time, I would envision an equilaterial triangle (long sides are the same length) where the corners are the cue ball and object ball (or extension of the path that has the OB so that the bottom of the triangle formed a parallel line with the opposite rail) and aim for the top point of the triangle. It was entirely based on feel and banging balls around for a long time. It worked... decently enough, but not for tricky speed and/or english requiring bank lanes.

Then I learned a few different ways to more accurately deal with banks from both the VEPS Disc 4, and there's even a nice little systematic section on the Mastering Pool Disc 3. I've also picked up the Beard's book which is nice, and other tidbits from around the web.

For banks - get your hands on Freddy The Beard's stuff - its simply the best information you will ever find.

For kicking - I have this file available for free through my website

Banking Lanes

A "banking lane" is an area between two "banking guidelines" that helps you visualize the bank angle for a ball within the banking lane. The blue lines below are guidelines. The areas between them are banking lanes.

chefdrew: I teach a specialty class of Kicking & Banking. It's all hands on. Usually takes us a day. If interested just let me know. I might be in your area soon.....SPF=randyg

For two rail kicks. Imagine a line between the CB and the OB and find the exact middle of this line. From this point aim at a pocket (90% corner but occasionaly a side). This aim line is now transfered to the CB (that is moved while retaining the same angular relationship) and becomes the point of aim for the CB. Use a touch of running english.

I picked this up by watching WPBA.

Thanks for the tips, everyone, I will be checking them out and trying them on the table. Keep them coming if you have them for 1,2,3 rail etc...

Buy Jimmy Reid's "almost all I know" DVDs via eBay. The best kicking videos that I've seen by far.

This is a seldom documented, but VERY easy and repeatible method for 2 rail kicks. Easy and works well, but hard to get real accuracy on the hit. This is the nuts if you just want to make the hit.

the quality of the hit is equal to the quality of the measurement..grab a sloppy line get a sloppy hit....the more time you take... the better the contact... this system is as good as any as long as nothing is it the way... get a clean deadball hit.... get a clean line...

Grady made an awesome video years ago IMO.
