What book to get

First off, I am new to this forum. After looking at several threads, I felt that the replies by the instructors really useful.

I played pool for almost a year now. I have only been playing leisurely but now I decided to improve on it. What book should I get for a start? Thanks, leonard

This partly depends on how far you've gotten, but there are several books that will take you from the start to being able to execute nearly any shot. While the knowledge will help, the largest parts of improving are developing good fundamentals and working the knowledge into your game.

Good books to start with:
Robert Byrne, New Standard Book of Pool and Billiards
Dave Alciatore, Illustrated Principles of Pool and Billiards -- see also a lot of resources on his web site http://billiards.colostate.edu/
Phil Capelle, Play Your Best Pool

If you have a Borders near you, they may be having a going-out-of-business sale this weekend since all of their stores are closing. You can look through the books before buying to see if they fit your needs.

LeonardNKH...Books are great, as are videos. That said, they cannot answer questions, and therefore cannot replace the value of working with a qualified instructor. You may wish to consider this dvd series, as it demonstrates how to teach yourself a very good setup and delivery process..."Play Better Pool", Vol. 1, Mastering the Fundamentals. It's available from myself or randyg, or online at Amazon.com, or any of the online billiard stores.

Thanks for the reply. I want to get books to first improve on my fundamentals for now before I carry on further. Probably I will go with the books first. Thanks for all the information.

By the way, I don't have the ability to meet up with instructor as I am not living in USA. I am learning from my own school coach currently. Hoping to gain extra theory knowledge which will aid in my game

Get yourself a copy of The 99 Critical Shots in Pool by Ray Martin & Rosser Reeves.

OK Scott you caught me in a weak moment.
Just got them both coming from Amazon.

Sorry it took so long.

Cappele's stuff is good, 99 critical shots has a couple of mistakes. If you do a google searc, you can find them. Dr Dave's stuff is also very good and has wonderful web support through his website. John

"The Lesson" Tim Miller will help with fundamentals and stroke. "I Came to Win" Tim Miller will help on the mental aspects

I agree with all the posts on this thread. I would add "The Pleasure of Small Motions" by Bob Fancher.

Might I suggest Capelle's Practicing Pool, and the IPAT series (you can pick one that suits your skill level). The information contained in these titles are not only useful, but actionable. I have found that these are both great resources for structuring practice sessions and measuring progress.

I own most of these aforementioned titles, and I've heard so much about Dr. Dave's book, it's probably time to add that to my library. Any thoughts on his DVD series?
