What can I expect from a Pechauer?

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. I hope someone can give me some insight.

I've been playing for about 8 years, strictly recreational, at my version of Cheers. I have been using a Viking G08 (stock everything). It has worked out fine... no complaints so far... It's been a good bar cue.

I have recently purchased a table for the house and am starting to get more serious about my game. The other day, I ordered a Pechauer P17 with the Crown Jewel shaft. There are 2 things I know: 1. It's a very pretty cue. 2. It will definitely be an upgrade from the Viking. That's about where my knowledge ends.

I have hit a few Pechauers before and like them a lot, but what exactly can I expect out of my new cue? Will I notice a big difference going to the Pechauer from the Viking? I am also thinking about getting another shaft for it. As pretty as the Crown Jewel shaft is, I'm guessing that it won't play quite as well as others out there. I was leaning towards an OB-1. I have hit the 314 and Z shafts before, but I prefer a bit softer of a hit. Has anyone played with the Crown Jewel shafts? If so, do they hit as nice as they look?

Also, any advice on a tip of choice? I've heard lots of good about Moori and Kamui, but all I've hit is the Le Pro on my Viking and don't really know much about tip options.

I'm not sure if you asked enough questions for your first post.....:wink:

I'll try to answer....

Hit of new cue? To be honest it depends on a couple things. Do both have the same type of joint? Same type of taper? If the joint type is the same and they have similar tips then id say they will prob hit similar. If the tips and joint types are different you might think they play way different.

As for shafts... If you are currently playing with a stock shaft moving to any low deflection shaft will be a adjustment in both hit and aiming. The OB shafts can feel soft or quiet compared to other shafts. My best advice is to seek out other players who shoot with these shafts and give them a try. Most players will let you hit a few balls to see how they play. Sounds like you've done this a little so far.

TIPS, If you like soft hit then you prob like a soft to medium tip. The only way to know for sure what you'll like is to drop a little bit of cash and try a few out on your cue. One tip that i think you'd like (soft feel) would be a snipper. Try that first. I think you'd like it.

Bottom line, you are going to get a great cue. I've played with a Pechauer for some time and love the thing. I have many custom cues and the Pechauer, for a production cue, is top notch and you can't beat their warranty.

Cues will play different, so even though its a good quality cue it may take some "break in" time for you to get used to it. the same can be said for LD shafts. If I bought an LD shaft today, I would buy an OB. But I have hit several Pechauer's with Predator shafts and for some reason they seem like they were destined to be together LOL. I had a Predator on mine for awhile until I went back to the original shaft. Sold it to a friend that would hardly let me have my cue back, he went and bought his own Pechauer. I have both the Crown Jewel and regular Pechauer shaft, there is no noticeable difference in the play, both are good. I don't think it is soft hitting though.

I am really excited about the Pechauer... can't wait for it to get here. From what I have seen here and heard from friends, I'll probably end up flipping a coin between the Moori and the Sniper.

About the shaft, when going to a low deflection shaft, will the adjustment time be worth it? I've heard of a few people having a hard time getting the same amount of spin out of them. Is this true?

can anyone tell me what the handle measurements for pechauers are?

I'm not sure exactly how to measure this, so I just put the cue together and got down on a ball. Where my hand naturally went is where I measure. On two different cues I got 1.15"

If there is a different way to measure let me know.

The Pehcuaer should be firmer / stiffer due to the joint, and what I believe is stiffer shaft wood.

If you do opt for an LD shaft, be aware that they can make one with matching inlays, if you are inclined to spend the $$ for that.

In my opinion, Pechauer is one of the best production cues around. Any time you change cues, you will notice differences based on what you've become accustomed to. No need to change shafts or tips or spend money unless you find the production versions lacking for some reason.

i'm normally just measure right at the top and bottom of the wrap

Honestly you have two good Cues in the Pechauer, & Viking. Tips, there are so many made, you can seek the Holy Grail of TIPS?

But we use to have this player in Arizona. He won it all, all the time, and he played with a LE Pro. He won because of his skill, not his TIP.

BTW his Cue was a inexpensive, no frills, Plain Jane jane McDermott.

I am sure if you and some player like Archer, or Strickland switched Cues.

Just because you had their Cue, you would not like MAGIC have their game.

Think Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice.:wink:
 
I loved mine when I had it. Owned a new gilbert and pech. at the same time and preferred the pechauer. Won a couple tourneys in a short period of time with it. Played great...shouldn't have sold it :(
