It's real simple. D E F E N S E. Snooker will help your game tremendously with recognizing good safeties, as well as, kicking and ball pocketing. It is a great game and I have seen it improve a players game by 2 balls in just a short time.

Thanks for the response.what are the drills i should practice? Some snooker player told me i will learn DISCIPLINE as well and will impact my game in pool.I am thinking of playing snooker for an hour before i start practicing my 9ball.

And also do you think it will affect my stroke in pool since snooker requires shorter stroke?

I really do not know any snooker drills. I grew up playing a liability game with some locals, and after just a few short months I got really good and they barred me from the game. I never really noticed having to adjust my stroke, and I always played with the same cue I used to play other games with. Like I said, it really helped my defensive game along with kicking and playing smart. Sorry, I just never really practiced snooker drills.

I grew up on a 5x10 American Snooker table. While I think that it helped with accuracy, shot making, etc. Whenever I return to the game, it is VERY different than 8/9/or 10 ball. I guess if you mentally can switch gears, or play for the enjoyment of playing - more power to you.

The ball size, rounded pockets, size of table -- all lend themselves to different types of shots. I would drill/practice long straight shots, or small to medium cuts. Accuracy will be tested to the limit. Any english or error in stroke will be magnified on a 10 ft table and the rounded pockets will reject anything but perfection.

If you havn't played the game much, realize you will miss a lot. Not many 147's right out of the box. I will maintain that many shots do not transfer, and a few that do are better practiced on a whatever table you shoot other games on.

How many snooker players have converted over (other than the WPBA ladies) and found major success? And those that have found success transferred their work ethic in learning the new skills needed. They are different games.

I think the women do well because of their structured disciplined approach to snooker. Some of the younger women with no snooker back ground are picking up on the slower more disiplined approach that snooker brings. Correct me if I am wrong but I think you don't see many men players make the jump because the money is much better in men’s snooker

snooker won't help you much with your defense, the safeties on a snooker table are completely different. in snooker distance=safety. in pool with the smaller table, you can't use just distance you have to hook somebody. snooker will help you with your ball pocketing, but that's about it. position play is different too, so you won't improve your game much there either. but it's a great game to pick up!

Yes - the money is better, there is an established tour, they are celebreties - not just cult heroes to those in the know. Men's pool it the US could take a page from the snooker players. (Not ALLthe pages mind you, just the ones that would improve our situation).

It's a great game to improve your stroke. Reminds you not to put unintended english on balls.

I just can name a few with some of their most important titles :

Daryl Peach (last 9 ball World Champion, Eurotour winner, 3 times member of Mosconi cup winner teams)

Imran Majid (Eurotour winner, actually 1st at the GB pro ranking)

Tony Drago (3rd in 9 ball World championships, Eurotour winner, 2 times member of Mosconi cup winner teams, MVP of 2007 Mosconi cup, 2008 Predator 10 ball champion...)

Jonni Fulcher (Eurotour winner, 2nd in euro ranking 2006/2007)

Mark Gray (Eurotour winner, 1st in euro ranking 2007/2008, member of 2008 Mosconi cup winner team)

...

Don't forget Mika... he was a snooker player in Finland years ago.

1. Shot making. You have to hit the center of the pocket to have a realistic chance of potting the ball

2. Appreciation for defensive play. I agree with the previous poster that distance does equal safe in snooker, however many of the safeties are the distance variety and will help you see when you should and shouldnt play a defense.

Here are some videos of Hendry, Higgins and Selby practicing. It's not a bad idea to mimic what they are doing. Check out the Snooker forum there are pleny of posts about practice methods.

First and foremost though, I would practice runing the colours of their spots. It's drill in itself.

Not knowing what speed you play, I can only generalize. Playing snooker makes the pockets on a standard pool table look Huge. Kind of like switching from a tight 9' to a Valley barbox. So with the pockets now looking huge, any game is easier because more of your mental 'juice' can be used on position play, and less on 'just make the ball'.

It's been decades since I've practiced on a 5x10 snooker table, but when I did I was mainly working on stroke. I placed the CB about an eighth of an inch off the side rail one diamond from the back corner, and the OB an eighth off the same rail one diamond away and shot into the far corner.... for hours! I adjusted the distance between CB and OB, varied speeds, varied draw and follow. I worked on this literally for days. Huge benefit to my stroke and confidence, and shooting on any other table looked easy.

Apart from that, any drill would be good to practice on a snooker table. Just be aware going in.... it's a LITTLE masochistic... bring some aspirin.

It will improve your concentration immensely. You really can't get lax on any shot. It's very frustrating espescially on a 12 foot table. I would usually just start with really easy shots and slowly expand to harder/further shots. Don't get disillusioned by how hard it is! Just keep at it. By the time you go to play on a pool table the pockets will seem huge.

No one is giving you the correct answer. Play 9 ball with the big balls on the snooker table. That'll help. Teaches you to AIM, AIM, AIM & hit the center of the pocket. Brian Capps one of our local champions plays 9 ball on a snooker table then when he goes to a 9ft pool table he is stealing.

What can I get from playing snooker?

What I get from playing snooker after long spells of playing pool is a timely reminder that I'm not nearly as good a cueman as pool makes me think I am

PS.........if it isn't a 12 footer it isn't snooker as far as I'm concerned.

Playing snooker regularly will straighten out your stroke and teach you to keep your head still. I don't think that playing for just a hour before pool sessions will help that much - it might give you a sense of confidence, but I doubt that it will make you play that well.

For practice, most snooker players use the line-up (google snooker practice "line up"). Playing the colors off their spots is also quite popular, even though the colors are very rarely still on their spots at the end of a game unless both players are pretty good.

Other posters have mentioned snooker players 'crossing over' to pool; as has been suggested, the reason why the top male pros do not try is because of the money. Drago is the only one I know of who was quite successful on the snooker pro scene but crossed over to pool. On the other hand, there has never been any money in the women's snooker game so there is more incentive for them to make the switch.
