hi everybody this is my first post here. I have been reading the threads in this forum for some time now. So I know there are a lot of you guys that own or had owned cues from a lot of different cue makers.
So here its my cuestion:
who would you recommend to make me a custom cue?
I don't want anything to fancy. I want a good player cue. Also it would be nice to have general idea of what should i pay for a simple cue since this would be my first custom.

Thanks.

(sorry if my writing is bad) :(

First Custom Cue

I would recomend shooting with a few differant cues in your price range. You really need to see what feels good to you. Custom should be just that. Your choice of weight, joint, wood, shaft taper, balance, tip, etc. The best advice I can give you is to try before you buy. I wouldn't go buying something from the internet until you know what YOU prefer. JMHO

if you want a simple cue, then a big name is pointless. there are many cuemakers who make decent cues. your question can't be answered until we get a sense of what you like in a hit.

what do you like?

,,,purdman makes a lot of sense. check your private messages.

Try this: find somewhere (poolhall, maybe) where you can try at least one SS jointed cue, and one flat-faced cue. See which one feels better to you in the hit. For most, The SS joint is going to provide a stiffer hit, less feedback. The flat-faced joint will not be as stiff 'feeling', but provide much more feedback. Please bear in mind, this relates to the joint only. The stiffness of the shaft will alter the perceptive 'hit' of a cue as well.
Me, I have shot with most every type of joint, and I have narrowed down my preference to the flat-faced joint w/a nice, somewhat stiff pro-tapered shaft. I like feedback in my cues.

Try before you buy, or you are gonna spend alot of money looking for that 'perfect' hitting cue for you.

I recommend BCM or Coker as they both are nice and affordable right now.

I would say pay about 300 t0 750 for your first custom cue. I would go with a good cue maker like mike webb and kenny murrell a little on the higher end side or maybe bcm ,coaker,Russ espirtu, jerry oliver, shanon, just a few decent hitting cues at a resonable price for a plain cue.Check out web sites like on the hill and wolfbite.com to see some pictures of the cue makers i named.

If you're going for technique and beauty then my recomendation would be Edwin Reyes.

I like Rick Howard cues or Ned Morris Cues. Both play great and you can probably pick one up at a decent price. I have seen quite a few Rick Howard's on eBay that were reasonably priced.

You beat me to it ... DZ hits a ton and it's the best cue I've ever had!!! :D

Oh ... and I also have one for sale, REALLY!!!

Wow, it hits a ton and it's for sale? What great timing...

Mine hits a ton and isn't for sale or trade. I really like how my dz hits, like it enough I've turned down about 10 offers to trade for nice cues. Mine is just a beat up sneaky, but its the only cue I own that isn't for sale at any price.

And yes...I still want the other cue...badly...

You haven't really said what you're looking to spend. I can tell you that Skip Weston is a player, from what I hear, a very good one at that. He also makes, IMHO, fantastic 'players' cues. His work is exceptional. His basic 4-point cue starts @ 850.00. www.skipwestoncues.net
I just sold my Skip, as I am having Skip build me a slightly fancier cue to my specs. But I have to tell you, I miss it terribly. It was like an extension of my arm.
I am sure others here have some good suggestions on other cuemakers that might fit your needs.

If you want a 'players' cue, then I suggest you do a little homework, and seek out those cuemakers who are or were players. They tend to build great playing cues.

Hope this helps!

We'll have to compare notes Lisa. I just sent my deposit to Skip this morning and now can start eagerly waiting.

Hummm...

I think you're missing the sarcastic humor attempted in my posting.
