What defines a "Cue"....

OK, so it's been years since I played competitive pool, or took much interest in the rules of pool as such. I play at home socially on my own table, I make my own cues, but I don't have a lot to do with all those nuances that make up playing the game competitively as such any more.

So just watching a youtube video from the 2007 Mosconi cup, where Earl was made to unscrew and lay down a cue, because he walked into the arena holding 4 cues ..... count em .... 4. (And they all looked the same .....)

I remember the old rule from my playing days ..... a player may bring 3 cues to a match.

So, what defines a cue.

Can a player bring a "Butt", with 2 shafts. What if the player brings a butt with 4 shafts, or 6 shafts.

What if I bring a Shaft, with 3 butts.

Can a player bring 3 cues, but then borrow a cue they did not "bring" to the match themselves. Can you "use" more cues than you "bring" ?

What if I build a cue, or a cue system where all the butts and shafts are interchangeable. Its like a breaking, jumping, playing, masse cue. It has 4 or 5 butt sections and 10 or so shafts.

And why the hell does it matter how many cues a player brings to a match anyway ?

Try telling a golfer to only bring 3 clubs to an event.

What gives with this rule ? Any idea why it was invented ? Is it still even current ??

Cheers - Dave.

Aren't golfers only allowed 14 clubs? This is an interesting question which I'm sure lots of people will have an opinion but I'm curious to hear a rule on this

I'm sure changing shafts is acceptable, but having, holding and carrying three together is the Normie' :). I've seen Rempe carry ten shafts in his case.

Keep in mind, this is a Show....

 Sadly, I've seen people carrying 2 butts and 8+ shafts. Some of the members of this forum have had cues made with 6 shafts, just for one cue!

I honestly cant see the need for more than 2 cues in a bag. Break and play cues, maybe an extra shaft or two. I break and play with the same cue, but I have two shafts. One for eight-ball and One-Pocket and the other for 9 & 10-ball... and I consider the fact that I have such a particular need to use a different shaft for different game times as an extravagance.

Just my opinion. But I know there are others that enjoy gearing up with butts and shafts for different weight and different tips, gloves, powder, wrist and elbow straps, weights, finger extension, bee-keeper hats, noise-canceling firing range ear muffs, ad infinitum... I feel this distracts and detracts from the purity of a person with a piece of wood at a table.

I really do expect to see someone show up to a tournament one glorious day with a damn caddy. They will stand there on the sidelines discussing the intricacies of the impending shot on the 4-ball. The caddy gesticulating wildly until he finally turns purple and shouts "Fine!!! Dont listen to me!!! O yeah... it's coming.

In golf you are allowed 14 in you bag but that 14 will include a ball retriever or umbrella if they are carried. The equipment is very much standardized and as things are developed they have to be approved by the PGA. Pool would be well suited if there was a sanctioning body and standardization too.

When I saw Rempe in his prime carrying THAT many shafts I'm sure he had his reasons, it was not the norm, and he was a Meucci supporter at the time. But cloth changes and the Black Dot Shafts/Meucci....were prevalent during his greatest years, and having different tips, shafts, probably gave him some advantage in match play. I don't know of Jimmy getting beat eleven zip Ever in match play. I've seen that ''look'' he gives ya when he's in pain.

It's most definitely not the norm for most, but for a sponsored player, I wouldn't doubt he would have many shafts. I think Jayson Shaw mentioned on a stream that he carries 4+ shafts for his Lucasi Hybrid, throw in a break cue and jump cue + extra shafts and that's plenty of wood!

I'm sure alot of players carry 3 cues these days, playing cue, break cue and jump cue so does an extra shaft for any of these put you over the limit? personally I would think it would go by the butt of the cue so only 3 butts allowed.

It is legal to change shafts after asking the referee and the opponent if you can and get permission to do so. Otherwise it could be considered taking the cue apart (forfeit).

If it ever gets to the point that I have a caddy, I want Earl. I don't care how people think of him as a person, I want a caddy that is a GENIUS.

Personally, I think I could get along with Earl...even on one of his "not so good" days. I can relate to a lot of things he says, but I have yet to "go off" on anybody (at least it has been quite a few years).

I have 5 for mine

I like to rotate my tips very evenly, with a couple of different shaft configurations for different games [ferrules, tips, etc]

The limit is 14 golf clubs; umbrellas and ball retrievers are not golf clubs and do not count toward the 14.
