What do players want?

More events? Or More money?

I agree.
We have 'big guns' at our tournaments and they all pay the same entry fee as us little people.

But, if you're looking to support a tour with a carrot of 'lower entry fees' for the majority of 'little people' that will support your tour... I guess DMIRO has a plan.

The majority of players out here will pay to play against the best available. That has never been a problem. Our last big two day event was a $2500 added with 91 players showing up from all over the state of California. the entry fee was $60 and first was $2000. There were some pretty heavy hitters here. Oscar, Jose, Santos and Rafael. No one needs a tour here.

I think he slammed pool room owners who don't want to put up money to have him put on a tournament at their pool room.'

Some people like to play against the Big Guns and others prefer their own kind. I like any kind of competition even the pea shooters.

There neeeds to be a National Tour and a National Players Association. Players need to compete, there needs to be a National Tour where players can make money. Or what are they going to do, play in small tournaments win small amounts of money and die broke? Well thats whats happening now.

If we have a national tour and 5K added each stop, make it affordable for amateurs to play we will have a sucess. The amateurs need to play, without amaturs there are NO TOURS.

NOW look at the below idea and tell me this doesn't look appealing to an amateur OR pro? Do this times 20 events a year! This is what NEEDS to happen, reguardless if (1) Person in California this there is no need for it.

Tom always so negitive? :) Cheer up, tomrrow you get to play pool. That always makes me have a good day!!

Pros $125
Amateurs $65

5K added

38 Pros = $4750
90 Amaturs = $5850

Total = $15,600

1st $3,900 25%
2nd $3,120 20%
3rd $2,652 17 %
4th $1,716 11%
5/6 $1,014 6.5%
5/6 $1,014 6.5%
7/8 $468 3%
7/8 $468 3%

9/12 $312 2%
9/12 $312 2%

The reason I like doing the payouts that way is so there 1 big gun can't come in and dominate everysingle event, and no one else has a chance to make some real money...

If we pay 1st place so top heavy, others won't have a chance to make some money. This is all about making money for pool players. With the right sponsorship, the right advertising, we will have a force to be reckoned with; and will be setting the bar super high!

Also we WILL and DO pay 100% of the entry fees back in to the pot. So those numbers are accurate.

Good luck trying to get 128 players to enter your 10% payout

What do you want?

true. we can pay lower down the list, but that is appealing.

What do you do Tom? Pay 1/4 of the field like normal; would that be better? But then the payouts aren't as good, and the best player really can't make enough money to live.

Besides, whats the sense in doing everything like everyone else? Let's do it right and give the players a chance to make some real money. I'd bet with proper advertising the players WILL show up.

Who else is running tournaments all over with 5K added? Hmm... We will see next year!!!

Wish us luck! Maybe we will see you there Tom, supporting your sport, rather then knocking everyone down! :) Have a nice day.

What I hear

More tournaments that pay out bigger and only as deep as the top
10-15 spots if not only 10.But I only stand around and listen while I
live stream

hi mike. looks like you got some tuff decisions to make. what about another option in the poll? devide the country into regions. have a number of smaller events with cash prizes and qualifying entrys for some in to a regional bigger event. then maybe a national event for a year end final with the top players considered for special treatment. with both ameture and pro status being considered all the way through.

most likely easier said than done but just some friendly feedback.

also is there and would it be better to have seperate calcuttas for ametures and pro's?

Gary/Zilla please please keep that avatar ....lol I just forgot I was ever down about anything in my life

Mike,

This is a forum to discuss all aspects of pocket billiards. Discussions include questions, some of these questions are tough. If that is negative then I am guilty.

If you don't want discussions... just post your events in the tournament section.

and to answer your question. I do pay 25-33% of the field.

Once again..if asking questions in this forum about your posts is 'knocking' then I am guilty... If all you expect is sheep following you, you have the wrong idea about what a forum is.

As far as wishing you luck..well Good Luck, from what you state your goals are.. it is more than just a little luck you'll need.

Don't worry, unless you ask a direct question, I'll no longer comment or ask any questions about you or your tour.

Well, thanks Tom.

Sorry, that you think I have the wrong idea. It just seems the last few posts, the negitive people have been you. Why can't you except that someone is trying to do something good for the sport. Someone who is honest and pays 100% back to the players? Someone who is making money off advertising NOT rapeing the pool rooms, and players?

And I do want discussions, that was the purpose of me starting this thread, that I wanted the players input. But, you just never seem to be happy, and are negitive. Maybe its me? Maybe I am mis-understanding what you are trying to say? (everytime you have posted about DMIRO)

Ask me a hard question... You have yet to ask one that I find anywhere close to hard.
Reguardless, its all good!

Skill over luck anyday.

I gotta say that I like Mike's idea about paying evenly spread 10% of the field. I feel it will attract alot of players and is a smart idea!

Tom, paying a quarter of the field or 33% of it is ridiculous and really the prize money ends up being a joke. We have a 3 weekly tournaments here and a large Quarterly (every 3 months) tournament. Out of each weekly tournie 10% of the pot is held for the quarterly. Well guess what, in the quarterly there is over 2000 in the prize fund but 1st only pays 500 because they pay the field so deep. In my opinion winning my entry fee back is a slap in the face. 500 for first? Come on I can make more than that in one night of gambling. I feel like I wasted my time when I walk out with what I walked in with. I if lose money then something obviously happend, and the sting will force me to learn something. If i come out ahead great.

One other thing, you have a right to your opinion but not to be a jerk. Mike is trying to do something good for pool and your critisizm is anything but constructive. How about giving a good idea after shooting down a (in your opoinion) bad idea?

Now understand people like Jay are who we are going after! We want tournaments where players can make money, not just show up to make 3-1 on their money! We want the to play the tournament si they don't have to gamble, we are trying to show the professional side of the sport! Thanks Jay nice post!

The problem is that right now players, especially amateurs, don't have the $$$ to travel for a national tour. Maybe if you break the country up into 4-5 regions & have a stop in each region every 2 months, that could work out.
Also, since the amateurs will make up the majority of the prize pool, you could payout the top 8 pros and the top 12 amateurs (total 15%-16% of a 128-person field). That would give us little fish a big reason to keep coming back.

Very true and with my format, we pay out the amateurs and pros so it is guaranteed that amaturs cash every event! What some don't understand is that without amateurs there are NO tours! Which I've been saying for a long time! Thanks for your post! Well said.

Mike I am not Jay. That is something Jay told me as my signature at the bottom of all my posts.

Mike,
I think if you are trying to build a tour/tournament that amateurs will support, you will have to cater to the amateurs. This payout looks like it caters to the professional players. An amateur doesn't mind spending a little money in an event but the amateurs I have seen on the trail ALL like to say, " I came in the money".

The cream always rises to the top. If you think amateurs are going to "regularly" support a tournament in which they have little or NO CHANCE of "coming in the money", you are mistaken, in my opinion.

Having a smaller entry fee for the amateurs doesn't make a whole lot of sense either. The amateurs are the ones who can afford a decent entry fee on regular basis. I THINK, the amateurs just want a fair chance at making a dollar every now and then.

For the record, some pool rooms have great organization and are experienced at advertising a tournament and running one and don't particularly need someone to run a tournament for them.

Other pool rooms, just don't want to be bothered with the headaches of promoting and running a tournament and need experienced promoters who already know how to acquire advertising revenue and product from interested businesses.

Just my $.02.

This is a good point. Heck we had one guy that was known for always coming home "one out of the money"

There has been several talks about this lately. Seems that some like it and some dont. I for one like the idea of lower entry fee for amatuers. Its not handicapped but at least they are getting odds on their money. Only problem I can see is players that could be considered borderline on their classification.

True, but if a tour would gain enough momentum those rooms main consider having them in their room just because what the tour name brings to the table. Not to mention Mike mentioned that his fees would come from advertisers and not the room owner if Im not mistaken. Would be a great opportunity for the room if this is the case. Not to mention with the trend in live streaming, if the tour does streaming they could add a wider audience for the room. No that doesnt mean dollars the day of the tourney, but could bring people to a room later from the exsposure. I know there are a couple rooms in AZ I would like to visit due to watching the streams.

Just my $.02.

Great post Joey! I normally dont like to reply within a quote, but you had too many good things to talk about.

Amateurs will cash!!

Joey, what DMIRO does is split the pros and amateurs such that the top 8 is ALWAYS comprised of 4 pros and 4 amateurs. So 4 amateurs will always get decent $$$.

So do they run in different brackets until the final 8 like some of the A,B,C tourneys?

I think Joeys point was the difference between paying 12% of the field and paying 25%. I got out of it the fact that a lot of amateurs would rather cash farther down than to see it paid top heavy. They could go home and say they cashed, to some it doesnt matter how much it was.
