Agreed, walking away is definitely a rude-ass move to make, but your best bet is to not give two steaming turds about it, and play for yourself. Nothing will piss off your opponent more then remaining completely disaffected by his actions and moving the game forward without him.

That is what you need to find out. Your job when at the table is only what is on that table, nothing else.

Now, if he is late getting back to the table when it's his turn, you have two options- 1. Let the director know about it. 2. Pull the same move on him.

In any case, you have to learn just to focus on your game and your thinking when in a tournament. If this little thing bothers you, rest assured, there are a lot worse things going to happen to you during tournaments. You have to learn to block all that out.

Seriously, let's turn this around. What fool in their right mind would leave the table while their opponent was shooting? I know I wouldn't! It's insane!!! You're just asking for trouble. He can foul 6 ways and not tell you and he has no obligation to tell you, either. Hence, if my opponent is going to be stupid enough to leave the table while I'm shooting, I'm going to let him know WHY it's stupid.
 
Stalling

Last night, final VNEA match of the season, I have a perfect score going, one more game to play, and my opponent left before he racked the balls. My captain told me that it was a "stall" move. I asked "should I stall him back", and he shook his head yes and laughed. The guy proceeded to stall again. I finally broke the balls, came up dry, but he was so nervous he missed a relatively easy shot, and I made one of the most intricate table runs of my life on a bar box. Precise shape, combinations with breakouts, shape in between balls, and finally I had more angle on a side pocket shot than I wanted to pull shape on the 8, so I slid the cue-ball off of one of his and barely got shape on the 8, with only about a 1/16th of an inch to spare without being hooked by his 5-ball. I wish I could do that every night, but his "stall" move backfired on him, and my "stall-back" move worked.
 
I just continue my inning. If they ask for a break, that's one thing, but if they just walk off, I'm not going to wait around for them.

Yeah, you also have to pick a fairly small guy. Don't do that with the a guy twice your size with a lot of attitude!


The guy talking to a friend? It would depend on the type of tournament. The more serious, the more I expect. If it's a Joss event, I'd politely ask him to sit, be still and be quiet. The less serious, the more I tolerate.
 
I guess i am just a very honest player. I call fouls on myself, play by all the rules, and I try to be as courteous to my opponent as possible.

Personally I like to see every shot my opponent takes. Maybe the main thing is for me to realize that not everyone has respect for the game like I do.

I think that I will continue to shoot next time my opponent walks away. It just feels weird like I'm doing something behind their back... oh well ... I guess I just need to get over it!

See? Your respect for your opponent is what they're relying on! It's good of you to think this way and honestly, I think EVERYBODY should be just like you. Call fouls on yourself. Play by the rules. Be courteous. But protect yourself, too. If your opponent is TRYING to distract you, you need to put a stop to it immediately. Sometimes, it requires doing something outlandish.
 
Thanks Jude and everybody else. Of course we All know what we should do. But this thread has made me laugh so hard in an other wise uneventful day. The one about shooting the balls in not even using the cue ball, is a picture I hope I carry into every situation. When someone is trying to shark me,,, Especially in a bar.
Last Saturday night I was trying to make some money for the light bill & two drunks started screaming at me before I picked up a cue. "no safety's" "No talking" bla bla bla They weren't even in the tourny. Needless to say I let em get to me. If I only could have had that picture in my head...maybe i could have focussed.

Depends on the tournament, but generally I will pause and wait for my opponent to come back.

When people walk away when you are shooting, it is a total move!

Reminds me of a story:

I ran into this situation some years ago playing Ismael "Morro" Paez, he walks away all the time. This was a larger regional tournament and at the begining of the event, they stated you may only take a break between racks or during your inning or you will be penalized. We were playing each other for the hot seat, and while I was down on a 5 ball, he just walks away and goes to the bathroom. I shot and made the 5, then notified the tournament director. I was immediately awarded the game. He sat his ass down for the rest of the match as he got drilled. Drilled him again in the finals too :D
 
If it's your turn and your opponent leaves the playing area are you supposed to stop or do you have the right to just keep on shooting?

The above is assuming that he hasen't called for a time out to go to the bathroom.

That reminds of me of a true instance that happened at the NC State Football and ECU Football game. The guy gets ready to open the door to leave.
"Hey, you didn't wash your hands."
"Yeah, well they teach us not to pee on our hands at ECU." These guys couldn't have been less than seventy years old. It really was a hoot.

If you wander off during my turn, I play on. I figure you're not interested in the game or you trust me to call my own foul, which I do.
If you're away from the table when I foul, you'll come back to the cueball sitting on the chalk cube. On the other hand, you might come back to the table with the rack out waiting to be filled.
I am not aware of you while I am shooting. The only time I would really notice you gone would be when I am going to make a questionable hit and I want you to watch, or my turn is over and you aren't there waiting to shoot. If you take too long to get back to the table I'll say something about it.
