What do you do with this shot?

I was left with this layout Saturday night. I thought it over but was still unsure of the right move...

Believe it or not this is a fairly common shot. It seems like every time I get in a match my opponent shoots it a lot.

I'll second that!!

Also...for me at least, this will often rear it ugly head after a lag or coin flip. After that I usually make my opponent shoot this monster.

Eric,
I can understand your confusion at this juncture in the game. I've experienced this also and will always be at a loss for serious direction.

I've spent the last few years (late 80s) trying to figure it out as best I could, but without any positive results.

Byrnes and Jewett have taken great lengths explaining the objective, but I don't have the significant brain power to understand their multi-page instructional books to win this battle.

I think Walderone said it best. " Just hit the One ball and see what happens"

This is a fairly easy 4 rail kick shot into the 1, using right english.. The 9 will carom in almost every time. (It rarely works if you hit the 1 straight on)

I know it doesn't seem obvious because of the cluster, but you need to try to tie up the nine ball a little better.

I know how to handle this position....

You put the other six balls in the rack that someone seems to have forgotten about and play a real game. 14.1

LoL seeing this gave me a good laugh as well as the follow up diagrams.

What you do is turn to your opponent and say "You aren't going to believe this shot" then shoot as hard as you possibly can and when something goes in turn to them again and say "Just as I planned".

You are sitting on an excellent opportunity for a safety, if you spread them balls out then there is a chance that somebody might make one. Be smart play safe.
