1. What do you eat before an important match?

2. How much time do you give yourself to digest your food before you play?

3. What is the worst food you have had before or during a match?

I was told that a high protein diet would help the player to cope with pressure. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that?

It was about two months ago at the NYC Tri-State Open. My friend Michele kindly brought in some brownies to help me get through the day. It was 4pm and I hadn't eaten since breakfast so I started having them, and in the end ate just about all of them. Then 5-10 minutes later, I came on really dizzy and light headed. I could not focus at all. I almost conceded the match to go and lie down, but in the end I carried on and after being 6-1 pre-brownies, I managed to eek out a 9-7 win. I asked her what was in them and she admitted they were very very sweet! I think I just had a sugar high (I rarely drink soda), and although they were delicious, I will eat her brownies in moderation from now on :)

1. not too much, and nothing heavy, I actually play well a little hungry.

2. anytime I feel I'm getting too hungry.

3. McDonalds! I ate it driving to a 9b tourney in Delaware and regretted it the whole night, but finished 2nd.:D

Pasta. Any type of pasta. It is good for energy and does not leave you bloated. I avoid caffeine, alchohal and cigarettes when I am competing.

Haven't had an important match in many moons, but if I did, I guess I would follow Ronnie Allen's advice: eat a nice, big, thick, spicy handful of garlic. When your opponent was ready to get down for a key shot, walk up to him and whisper: "let's jack the bet after this game, whaddayasay". It's the ol' Cochran's "garlic double-shark" and works pretty well. Course then you win the cash and can't find a babe that'll help you spend it, so it's a double-edged sword.

0, zip, nada, nothing.

I want to be hungry so I only have coffee.
If I win, I treat myself to whatever I want.
If I lose, I wait until I book a winner before I eat again.
Had a bad streak back in '78 and lost 15 pounds.
Finally booked a nice winner and ended up in the hospital.

I like the garlic diet, you folks sure have a great sense of humor. Thank you for the laugh.

rice or pasta

I favor rice or pasta with only a little something to flavor it. You want food that will give a slow release of energy without leaving you bloated. I eat comparatively lightly. I definitely stay away from a lot of sugar or an unusual intake of caffeine. I would say avoid caffeine but if you drop caffeine suddenly you will go into withdrawal.

Sugar gives you that quick lift followed by a equally quick crash as your body dumps insulin to deal with the sugar. Although I don't always do it, eating right on match day and at least a day before gives me an edge in competition I believe.

I normally try to eat something that wont kill my stomach. So i normally get something like a subway sandwich, or just a big bowl of cereal, or a Salad.

The worst thing, which i have heard a couple times is anything greasy, like a Burger or pizza.

I had a episode, i got to the pool hall got a burger n fries, well a guy i know walked in and wanted to play, and i said i would when i am done eating,,, i get done eating an my stomach doesnt feel right, but i play anyways. I end up loosing 3 straight sets and call it good, cuz my stomach was rolling. I lay my cue down and RUN for the bathroom and i swear i took a crap so big my pants ended up fitting better.

The whole burger n fries raced through my system and just killed my stomach and ass lol.

I eat light. My favorite is chicken noodle soup and a small salad.

I have to agree with OHB, shooting hungry you just seem to concentrate better. I guess while your digesting your mind is pulling double duty (concentrating and norishing itself.) Has anyone else noticed this? Someone eats directly before a match and their game goes down the...

I usually try to eat 3 hours before the match.

> I try to eat a good meal that leaves me full the night before a tournament, for starters. For breakfast the next morning, something light and in no way greasy or spicy, even though I love spicy foods and hot sauce in particular. If that means me eating a tuna or pimento cheese sandwich or even something like bologna or ham sandwiches from a gas station while everyone else eats McDonald's or IHOP before a tournament,so be it,I'll get something more substantial later, rather than take a chance on having it go thru me and put me in the bathroom several times before I play. More often than not,if I have to take a dump within 30 minutes of eating,it won't be the only time. Ask any athlete,if your stomach gets tore up before competing, and you go several times, not only is the benefit of what you just ate wasted, but it takes even more than you put in nutrient-wise. I also avoid pancakes for breakfast, too much sugar and makes me sleepy, lazy, and bloated, even if I just eat 2. I also don't want to eat until I'm full. The best I've ever felt physically before and during a tournament I had fettucini alfredo,a creamy noodle dish served usually with lightly grilled chicken, and ate about 75% of it. Lance Armstrong has been reported to eat Ramen noodles every night before bed, giving the carbs longer to dissolve. I also had about 3 hours from the time I got there until I had to play, and won 5 matches in a row on the loser's side to finish 3rd in a U.S. Open qualifier. I felt so good physically it manifested itself mentally in the form of clearer decision making under battle conditions, which helped my stroke loosen up. If possible,I like to eat something light again 4-5 hours later,if I have to leave between matches to go get it. I prefer ice water to carbonated drinks during matches to avoid the sugar/caffiene,but have been to places that give me a hard time about asking for water,as opposed to me paying for drinks, thinking that I'm just trying to be cheap. We've all seen people like that,I'm certain. Also, most rooms that hold tournaments won't let you bring outside drinks in. After the matches are done for the day,I eat a huge meal. On the other hand,Buddy Hall has been known to go into a restaurant and order the biggest steak they have and go play a match an hour later. In the last year or so,I've discovered that Imodium tastes horrible, but works great,so my meal choices have opened up considerably, but I still try to stick with what worked in the past. Tommy D.

1) Something light, like a Sandwich and water.

2) 30 mins.

3) Anything with milk/dairy in it. Makes me wanna empty my stomach.

Any high energy drink or jelly. Keeps my heart pumping before the match, then it smooths out.

I got up this morning at 7:30 getting ready for an 8 ball tourney at 10:00.

I fixed hash browns, cheese, Jimmy Dean extra hot sausage, scrambled eggs (2), fresh biscuits (2) with boysenberry preserves, grapefruit juice and coffee.

Got to the pool hall and there were 96 entries. I won two matches, lost one. I had a beak at about 3:30 so I went to “Arctic Roadrunner” burger palace and got a cheese burger , fries and a chocolate shake.

Went back to the tourney and won one and lost one to be out. Had a couple of beers and came home to write this post over a glass of wine.

Performance diet NOT

Good day ...absolutely

Whatever

the Pool room has, but I do not like to eat during a match if I can help it, and I like 15 minutes after eating before playing. I won't eat anything that might upset my stomach, but that isn't much really.... lol

Sometimes I might eat a little lighter like a Chef Salad or Fried Chicken Salad, and suck down a couple of Cherry Dr. Peppers.

you have to think like an athlete and eat like an athlete..... i race mountain bikes on an expert level besides shooting pool and working. I learned alot about conditioning and eating doing so.... you may not think that food may make a difference in a pool touney vs a gruelin mountain bike race, but it does... walking and thinking and shooting for 7-8-10 + hours is trying on the body.... when i 'practise' if it's before my day of work, i'll shoot for 7-8 hours until 2am or so.... it's endurance training on the pool table..

eating sugars and caffeine is definitely a no-no... albeit you may get a lift for a bit, you crash hard and it makes you jittery and unfocused <don't get me wrong, a cup of coffee in the am will get ya going and if you drink a cup a day, it won't mess with you. BUT if you never drink soda or caffeine-stay away as it'll effect your system more than someone who drinks a cup a day>... a protein and slow absorbed carb meal is a definite the dinner before your match day <i like pasta with grilled chicken> and for breakfast i like an oatmeal, or something with grains and add raisins and a little honey <for flavor and a littlee sugar boost> they are slow burning carbs and will give you energy throughout the day... also hydrate well... i drink gatorade or propel or something like that... when i race i use a real concoction of hard core stuff but for pool i don't.... stay away from the beers too..... if i'm in a tourney at nite, if double elim and i get kicked to loser bracket i may have 1 beer... beer is also a depressent, leaving more a chance for frustration to kill your concentration and harder to overcome that 'bad shot' ...

so that's my .02..... i try to eat well and stay in shape for racing so i am accustomed to eating like above, for others it may not be an easy feat or even seem like a need for playing pool.... it'll keep you sharp and eventually if you shoot enough matches and eat like above-you'll lower your cholesterol too :-)

I eat me a triple whopper with cheese only, and a king sized fry! I'll eat it about a hour or two before I play a regional tour stop. I'm not a big believer in eating certain foods to play better or perform better.

Not just before an important match, but every time i go play pool, i try not to eat anything that'll be hard to digest. Maybe something like a small turkey sandwich or a salad. I eat at least an hr before i start to play, but try for 2 hrs whenever possible. The worst might be that time i had 2 slices of pizza and half an calzone..... thankfully i didnt exactly have any important matches or anything, and still had about an hour to digest. I usually never eat when i play, unless im really THAT hungry that it distracts me. If im tried when i get to the pool hall, then i have a cup of coffee. When im playing the only think i take in is either water or snapple.
