Ok, I met Tony Zinzola this past week and we had a small talk about materials used for cues. One thing we talked about was buckhorn for butt caps and joints. What do you guys think about the look of it? Personally, I think with the right design of a cue buckhorn looks kick ass. Tony isn't very fond of it, which is all fair and good, I mean we all have differing opinions. I was just wondering what everyone else thought.

Personally.....I hate the stuff.

I've seen some pretty stellar cues made by some really talented cuemakers...but they added buckhorn to it, and ruined it completely (again, just my personal opinion).

I can't even really describe why, exactly, I don't like it....

All I know is that I cringe every time I see a cue with really great woods butted up against a buckhorn buttcap or joint. The grey-ish tones just don't do it for me.

I hear it plays nice, though. I wouldn't know.

Nah, no offense taken at all. I can totally understand how you feel. I've seen it on cues and thought it looked terrible but I think with the right design it would look awesome. Hey, now that I think about it that Mottey buffalo cue would look killer with it.

Must be just me that loves the look of it then. Give me an ebony Merry Widow with a buckhorn joint and butt cap all day long......awesome.

Like anything

Like anything, you need the right design for it to work!
It cannot be forced, and I have seen that too many times!

It works with that KM cue, it also doesnt hurt that I like olivewood!

I actually really enjoy buckhorn in cues. Sometimes it doesn't look as good as it could....but as said above, it just depends on the design. However, I think it plays great and I like it. I have two cues with buckhorn I guess....and I have stock of a couple different types of buckhorn waiting to be cut into usable pieces when I get my shop set up this summer!

Didn't know how to vote on this one....none of the choices really fit for me. I'm very fond of buckhorn, but it MUST be in the right design. Doesn't look great on just any cue.

Buckhorn breaks alot.
Nick :)
Where did you get that notion?

Btw, buckhorn is so generic. Antlers come from so many species. Some are harder than others.
Generally, they do not break easy. They are harder and MUCH more durable than ivory. They don't crack sitting on the shelf due to heat or dryness.
They don't need to be sleeved with phenolic either.

I HATE IT. I don't care how good it plays

I hate it. It looks dirty to me. Ferrule material looks like a old house cue ferrule or like Earl Strickland's ferrule

It looks like sanding dust got into the material the way it does in a LBM ferrule or butt cap when it is not done correctly.

I am sticky with the nice cleanlook of Ivory for myself.

Bnall has the first refusal then will be offered to the waiting list.:)

Nice in my opinion

I like the look of buckhorn on my Zylr. It hits great too. It gives a subtle 'bling' to a very plain jane cue. Just my opinion
