What does the butt actually do?

The butt of the cue gives your hand something to hold onto! :D

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

And also, Jay, that's the hand that goes back and forth in what we pool players call a," stroke."

I think, just possibly, why men are better at this game than women has to do with the amount of time we spend practicing this motion when doing things other than shooting pool.

This is sort of a rephrasing of the common question... "can I use a cheap butt with a nice shaft and end up with a really nice-playing cue?" and the answer is yes. Many players do exactly that with good success. Stick that sumbìtch on a cuetech butt if you want.

First of all THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES AND HOW FAST TOO!

I do believe that the butt of a cue matters. You do not want the butt of the cue to hinder the performance of the cue. If the cue is absorbing energy it can certainly bring down the performance of the cue. I believe that the shaft is more important to the performance of the cue; however, you don't want to bring it to the extreme that the butt doesn't matter and choose a poor quality butt to go along with your high end shaft. Balance and the feel of the hit really do matter in bringing out the best in your game.

The Lucasi cues are good quality and offer a nice hit and balance. They are not ultra high-end, but the certainly are not junk, either. I would say that your Lucasi LE-7 will definitely benefit with a Z2 or OB-2 shaft. It will certainly be your least expensive way to significantly improve the playability of your cue.

Play well.

Ah okay thats nice to know. Nice the million dollar question, Z2 or OB-2 Shaft?

My stroke is a bit wonky, not sure if having a heavier cue would affect this in anyway?

yeah led me think, why do people spend thousands on cues when its really only about the shaft (guess you can if you are a student and want a nice looking cue!)

The tip represents 70-80% of the performance of the whole stick
The shaft represents almost everything else in the performance department
The butt is there to hold the shaft coaxially, have the right weight, and have that weight in the position that balances the cue where the player likes it. This represents at most 5% of the performance of the stick as a whole. However, when fancy woodwork is applied, this end consumes vast quantities of the money.

Between the Z2 and the OB2 there is nothing so major that the player can't get used to either in a couple hours of play. If you are still on the fence, flip a coin.

Hey guys

I spent about £100 on my Lucasi E7 a few years ago but I want to get a new shaft as i believe it will help me etc. I'm considering getting a Z2 shaft as they seem to be the best these days but there is also the OB-2 or something?

But anyway I mainly wanted to know would it be okay to just get a new shaft or does the butt of a cue play a big role? I can only think that it's purpose is for looks and to help with weight. Just would like to know if its really that important in case that I should get a whole brand new cue from the brand I get my shaft from.

Thanks a lot for taking time to read and for help!!

Without the butt, you'd only be playing with a 29" shaft.

Without the butt, how is a custom cuemaker going to jack the price of his work.

Without the butt, how can any 9ball player send more than 4 balls to the rail on the break.

I have a Pred 314 shaft and have tried bolting it to both my Players and custom Pinoy cues. Of course there is a difference as the Pinoy cue is slightly heavier and therefore hits harder.

But this is not necessarily a good thing as it is harder to control the extra power. So depending on the individual - power or control? No better or worse here, just different.

If your stroke is wonky like mine you can try what I do - I use the heavier 21oz Pinoy cue in practice to try and straighten out my stroke. A heavier cue may stay in line longer but it also amplifies mistakes.

I use the Players (20oz) for normal play as I get more control and is more forgiving.

My girls can tell you what a butt can do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;):grin-devilish:

Any measureable truth to the butt affecting deflection? Assuming a butt in the normal range of weight and stiffness, probably not. In theory the cue ball leaves the tip before it can be affected by more than four to six inches of the shaft. That theory is wrong but probably close enough as a working theory.

Hey Hu:

The only butt deflection I've ever heard of, is when I'm applying my size 10s to someone that deserves them. The amount of "butt deflection" I get is directly proportional to the size of the butt, as well as the speed and follow-through of the size 10 "application." I have to be careful, though, about not hitting center ball when applying my size 10 -- lest my size 10 "disappears" and, well, I guess would be considered "pocketed."

P.S.: yes, I know I have small feet. But whaddayawant from a guy that's all of 150 lbs soaking wet?? :D

The world blow pool winner can shoot the cue all out of his mouth, break the rack and send more than 4 balls to the rail.

Oh and by the way, I am not joking!!!!!;):)

Could spot you fifty

Sean,

I weigh one hundred fifty pounds too, my left leg! I could spot you fifty pounds of my weight and still weigh all I needed to. Actually the big hot has arrived down here and I've been working outdoors. Down to maybe 240 and I'll be happy if I ever see 220 again. Less than that and people start calling me "Skinny"!

Methinks that there is a bit more to deflection than folks want to admit to but I have to say I don't really care. I can't help remembering that the best pool players I have ever played didn't know what deflection or squirt was, didn't know how to turn a computer on, were so stupid they didn't know the shots they were making weren't possible!
