What does the term "sweating a match" mean?

When ever I heard the term "sweating a match" in the past, I always assumed that it meant something like, watching a match that you are betting on.

If that is not the meaning of the term, then why do they call it "sweating a match"?

I always wondered why that term is used so often in the pool world.

Why not just say that you are going to watch a match?

Why is the term "sweating a match" used so often?

Just curious.

Thanks for enlightening me about the meaning of this term that is used so often in the pool world.

It means "to watch". Not positive here but i believe it started with people betting on the side in poolrooms. If you were betting on the outcome you were "sweating it". Nowadays it just means to watch or observe.

Coz when you havae a piece of action you exert no contr over, wtf you gonna do?

You are gonna do 3 things: sit, watch, stress.

+1

I also suspect it originated in the pre-air conditioning days.

It means it's too hot in the pool room and there are drops of sweat splattering the table while you shoot. It's a foul in some rooms and can get you roughed up a little in others. Don't ever sweat a match.....no matter the cost.

Yeah, but why would you stress over the match, unless you had money on it? Maybe only if you were a really hard core fan of one of the players, and you really wanted them to win.

I think it just means watching a match intently, particularly so that you care about the outcome. You are literally "sweating" with nervousness. Same applies to a "sweat bet"...meaning you just want to place a (typically small) wager to make the match more exciting and interesting.

To be sitting on the sidelines, probably with financial interest, but not competing.

All the best,

Yeah, it means to watch a match that you have a bet on.

If someone is using the term to describe simply "watching" a match they are using the term improperly, not changing the defintion of the term.
