What exactly does it mean to be a "house pro?"

Does the house pro get paid by the pool room? Or do they just get free table time in exchange for endorsing the pool room?

It depends

on the level of Pool room it is, and if they really are considered a Pro or not.
Some just shoot Pro speed or near Pro speed, and fall into the job because they know the owner or other people.

And level of pay depends on duties expected, like taking care of Pro shop (selling cues, clothing, cases, etc), giving lessons, running tournaments, maintaining tables, getting action going, etc..

Most are just paid about what the bartender makes or a little more if on an hourly basis, plus they get the money from lessons they give, and any side action they get and make, and maybe a commission from any sales they do, and maybe run inhouse leagues, take inventory, etc.

But having a pro there draws people in, including other good players, and people like to see the best players play each other, especially for big money, and those people (railbirds) play, eat and drink, which is good for the Pool room

It varies from poolroom to poolroom, depending on the pro and the room itself.

House pros can get anything from free table time to travel/tournament expenses. Their duties can range from merely playing there regularly, to giving lessons, promoting the venue and working the counter.

Along with "House Pros" Ive also seen "House players"..... It varies, but it is usually a top player in an area, sometimes financially backed by the pool room for a cut of the income.

House pro

Ok, so I can guess that between your last post and this one one you have a "house pro" that wants you to make a commitiment to $900 for some lessons. i would think you should ask this person what he would charge for one or two hours of his time. Then see how that goes...

Actually, that's not true. They were 2 completely unrelated posts.

The instructor question relates to a person who runs a 3-day pool school. He is not a pro player, and did not want to tell me where he fell on the ABCD scale.

Well if you can then get the house pro if he is a good player to gamble cheap with you, maybe just for time, get your lessons that way.

Fast Lenny...Just curious, but how is gambling like getting lessons? Oh wait...it's NOT! They are two separate animals, imo...both with benefits, but completely dissimilar. Lessons are the better value by far!

When i have gambled i have learned many things about the game and pressure, thats one thing you cant get from lessons with an instructor is pressure like when your money is on the line.I myself will take lessons down the road and know they would be beneficial to my game but i also feel gambling helps too.Alot of good players i know say they havent taken lessons, they have gambled, could be because some are old school and instructors in pool was very uncommon. As for which is better gambling or instruction,it would be interesting what people think on here is better, maybe we could do a poll. :D

Right, because the "house pro" will be more willing to help if you add some money to the equasion, otherwise, like I said in another thread they will help, but teach you only what you already know...i am no differnt
